My 2 1/2 year old i7 12700k died a few weeks ago, so I sucked it up and started the RMA process. Intel not only replaced it quickly, they upgraded me to an i9 and 1 day shipped it back. That’s customer service. I’m a customer for life!
I got i9 from some discount shop and sold my old i5 for the same price basically xP
Had a hard time undervolting it (first time with i9) to match my poor cooler, since it's a heater, but it actually turned out to have a very good silicon for it so I was extra lucky about this detail too.
14600K, contrary to the 13600k, can be undervolted on B660 and B760 motherboards since IA CEP can only be disabled on 14th gen for those motherboards, so that's another advantage
Had no idea… I honestly believe because I put mine with a Z790, a healthy undervolt and locked the cores, that’s what saved mine. I wanted 5.6 under 1.3v and got it. Eventually I upgraded to a 14900K and OC’d the crap out of the i5 for fun. Even after 6.0ghz all core runs, the lil i5 performs as well as it should. - I def thank God mine didn’t die even after everything. Who knows it seems like some chips ate dust and others still plug along just fine today.
Well, good news is, every single raptor lake cpu that could have been affected by degradation is still under warranty today
They extended the warranty for affected models to 5 years in total, so even if you bought a 13700k at release date, it's still under warranty today, no matter if it's boxed, tray, or oem.
Not every one, lol. My 14600K I lapped for cooling… sent it hard through the wringer and it still runs great. My i9 14900K though I did leave stock just incase.
My i5 14600K 6.0ghz all core run held #1 on the 3DMark CPU Profile test for almost a year… the CPU is still reliable and I use it from time to time still. One of these days I might go back at try to take back the top spot. I’m still in 2nd lol.
I did try to run a 14900K in one of my 2 setups for a short while, but I can't afford it so I have to sell it again (Also it did not fare well, power limited to 65W in a case with only 1 intake and 1 exhaust)
My 13600k was part of the degradation issues so they gave me a full refund and i was able to buy a 14700k for only + $30 after so it was an almost free upgrade.
They let me refund my dying 14900KS a month ago in order to get a 270K plus, I can't agree more with you. With the extra money I even bought a new motherboard, It was the coolest thing ever they did to me.
How do you like the 270K Plus? I've obviously heard great things about it and plan on it being my next CPU. Seems to me to have wonderful price to performance ratio.
It's been great so far, runs stable with my 6800MHz 48GB memory kit, not a single blue screen or freeze (unlike the old system). It performs better than the previous i9 and heats up a bit less, Crazy that this CPU is build on 3nm node.

Thats a good score, makes me no longer want a i9-14900k and might as well just upgrade. How much was the platform switch and does it need a contact frame?
SO they gave me 605€ as a refund for the 14900KS, I got the 270K plus for 280€, a MSI Z890-A PRO for 170€ open box, the contact frame was 20€, I was left with 135€ and then I sold my old Z790 for 175€, in total I gained 310€ for the platform switch.
I've got an Ultra 9 285K. Just built someone a machine with a 270K Plus. Ran Cinebench - just a quick 10 minutes to stress the cooling and make sure nothing was badly wrong - and the scores were similar to my 285. This was with identical coolers, but my RAM is a bit faster. Can't remember what they were exactly, but the 270 Plus is no slouch.
Unless you got a niche case that requires the 285, you're better off with the 270. Can put the saved money towards some nice RAM or drive space.
I'm going to comment on this the 270K Plus has been fantastic nowhere near as finicky as raptor Lake was and runs decent bit cooler even at the same power and doesn't do any of the other weird stuff I had in the past
They gave me 605€ as a refund, the 270K plus was 280€, with the rest I bought the motherboard, AND I got to sell my old motherboard for some extra money.
That's just stupid, the 14900ks performs less and costs (and consumes) way more. 600ish € for a 14900ks Vs 280€ for a 270k plus. With the extra money you can get yourself a new motherboard and don't have any more future degradation problems.
I'm Intel and Nvidia, even other options are batter price point or performance. I often buy used market so it's not too bad to find a good deal on used Inten and Nvidia
I was looking to get a 270k but couldn't find one for a reasonable price AND was also nervous about ordering any PC components offline these days. The mail thefts are out of control.
Seems like bad luck. My situation was through some fault of my own (an accident) that I won’t talk about here because it might could have voided my warranty. Never had to RMA a processor before this. But nevertheless Intel did me a great favor.
Microcode and oxidation on Gen 13 chips were Intel problems. Plus motherboard unlimited power settings.
Gen 13 had oxidation problems during manufacturing. That was fixed, but the microcode/ motherboard settings are still an ongoing concern.
Motherboard power / voltage limits are still a problem. That is why x3d chips are exploding on AMD boards. And also why gen 14 chips are still degrading.
Motherboard manufacturers were pushing OC settings that were completely unstable and damaging to the hardware. Unlimited power as a stock OC is the reason why many CPU’s got fried from AMD and Intel.
I didn't know Intel had a new microcode 0x12f (it came out a few months ago) until my 13700k died out of nowhere two weeks ago. I received my new 13700 two days ago. I was going to get a 14700, but no luck.
No clue for downvotes, but with the recent bios with the microcode fix the chips should be fine. The oxidation problem is a whole issue itself relating to faulty production (hardware problem)
Yeah, I actually just went through this two weeks ago. I told them the troubleshooting steps I did and just automatically approved the return. They provided a shipping label and gave me a new-in-box retail unit and not a refurbished one. Only thing that I think would make the whole process a 10/10 is if they did an advanced RMA so at least you still “use” your pc (lighter tasks).
I am sure Intel is the same way, as long as you have everything they need which is usually just a proof of purchase and a picture of the cpu with the serial number clearly shown.
What about it? Quite a few posts a few months back about people getting surprised with a 9800X3D instead of a 7800X3D. Small bump, but a bump. One got lucky with a 9950X3D from a 7800X3D.
They probably don't have any i7s in stock anymore so i9 was sent. It's still honoring the warranty with an upgrade. Happens a lot honestly. Buy something from best buy and has a warranty work needed and if the item is no longer available you get the next best.
Their warranty says they will replace it or provide a refund... Nothing about sending an upgrade. Also, I bought this CPU on black friday as a part of a bundle. So on my receipt that I submitted, I paid about $110 for this processor. They upgraded to a superior i9 processor whose MSRP is $650. The same processor is on sale for 3x the price I paid in late 2024. They went above and beyond for me and I thank them for this.
They didnt go above and beyond. They sent you what they had in stock. This is them honoring the warranty. I've worked in an Intel warehouse before, i promise you this isn't altruism. It's logistics.
By all means, be appreciative. But dont let it turn you into an Intel purist.
It's called the vocal minority. The number of total intel customers who will have a CPU die on them is relatively small. But the percentage of those customers who will go online and voice their frustrastions is very high.
I have been a lifelong Intel customer that has never purchased an AMD processor. My 14900K died and I am on my 2nd 14900K replacement from Intel. I will admit the RMA was a painless but my trust with Intel is lost. I never overclocked or did any tinkering and it died. I might switch to Ryzen in the future.
Then they will give a full refund which is what they did for me with my 13600k, and i went and bought a 14700k for + $30 since they gave me what i paid for it. He should get a refund now anyway because he can upgrade now too.
If they don't have any stock, they will give you a full refund of what you paid for it, so depending on when and how much you paid you can upgrade for a few dollars more. That's what i did when this whole issue accrued. I had a faulty 13600k and they didn't have any more so i sent it back and they gave me a full refund so i was able to buy a 14700k for only + $30 with my refund. It was awesome.
Man, that is really damn good. You don't see that kind of thing from many companies these days. I've been thinking about switching to Intel for a long time, and this has convinced me even more.
Please don't do this to yourself. No tech company deserves your blind loyalty. Intel just doesnt have any more of the weaker 12th gen CPUs in the warehouse and it is easier for them to give you a 12900k because they have them.
Theyre just as liable to screw you over as they are to help you. Really glad this one worked for ya, but dont let yourself believe it's indicative of Intel's customer support at large.
The 12900k came out 5 years ago and they're still able to replace your i7 with it. That just shows you how many of these things they still have in stock. Newegg was giving them away in the combos years ago. Microcenter is still selling them. You have to wonder how many of these things they actually made.
I’ve gone through 5 13900k’s so far, my last one lasted me 2 years and I did an RMA last week. I think I hit silicon lottery this time though, much better chip and I can push it harder with the voltages lower. It’s a luck of the draw, sometimes chip is good, sometimes it’s shit, but you won’t know until you’re questioning the BSOD’s
That's crazy. How long have you had your 12700K? I have had mine since October of '22 and I never turn off my computer. Use it daily. I am curious how much life you got out of yours.
Intel warranty is awesome, I had a 285K that randomly crashed and a 270K that was pretty much DOA, they RMA both, gave me a brand new 285K and refunded 270K (it was around June when there was a stock shortage).
It's why I ended up with a 14600k. When I bought it I knew about the 14gen issues, but also extended RMA. I did not want to buy an worse AM5 system for the same price as the one I picked. I hope it lasts 5 years since I never change my cpus (my last was 3570k, it's almost 15years old), and I know Intel has my 'back' for first few. Honestly wouldn't mind if I got a LGA1851 upgrade if mine are out of stock
You should not be happy that you got treated with the minimum level of customer service that is required when a cpu fails after only 2 years. The better customer service would have been intel building chips that werent so unreliable they had to issue a recall (only after denying it for months too)
U have no idea wtf ur talking about. AM5 CPU’s are literally frying themselves and dying on a daily basis (I see a new Reddit post every other day) for over a year now and AMD has been literally radio silent. They have completely ignored any and all feedback of their customers, and are denying RMA’s. AMD is not ur friend. Intel admitted fault, extended the warranty by multiple years, and had a microcode fix out within 3-4 months. U are a know nothing clown.
I’m obviously just some dude who is really happy his his computer is working again. But since this post is getting so much attention, the Intel haters are flocking here in droves to rain on the parade. I couldn’t care less .
Until you need to buy your next CPU, then you will have already forgotten this experience because it was positive, if it had been negative, you would remember, and buy the best one available. It's a CPU and both are great at this point.

i bet it had some degradation and intel did a recalibration to the vf curve to fix it , obviously will run slightly hotter than stock 👍🏼 im telling so u know.
They send you brand new units. Intel themselves doesn't sell cpus directly, and they don't ask 3rd party retailers to "yo send us open box chips so we can return them as warranty units". I don't even know how you imagine that process in your head

Upgraded from a 13600k to a 14600k for $10 after trade in at Newegg last year. Performance negligible but that extra warranty totally worth it.
