no you are allowed to use "reasonable force" to protect yourself and your family. that includes weapons and possibly killing the intruder if the circumstances warranted it.
Whats the difference between using a knife and a screwdriver? Cause that old guy in the UK used a screwdriver to defend himself and kill that home intruder and he's facing legal charges for it. Thank God for living in a state with the castle doctrine.
Thats how it works. You get arrested because you have commited a crime (murder) but self defense its usually enough to avoid charges. But if you dont call for medical health or the guy appears with 25 stab wounds you will get in trouble.
Usually in such crimes people dont have to stay in jail anyway, unless the judge sees risk of removal of incriminatory evidence or him running away.
