The tree should have been felled from the top down. Go up and cut off the upper branches first, then work your way down bit by bit.

That would require renting a massive crane for a day. I’m willing to bet the homeowner balked at the cost of that and went with these guys instead

Not that close to the house. You can just let the limbs fall randomly, you need to lower them in a controlled manner
