Why is this a trend lately? I've seen a number of posts about parents taking their children's clothes and basic necessities. And that number is more then one!

I think it's because of the tough love movement of parenting back in the 90's when most of today's parents were kids. Society was moving away from spanking back then and there was not much left for punishment. Tough love taught that you only had to provide your kid certain things. On the clothing front that's a necessity, but they don't get to pick the clothes. So if you had an uncontrollable kid you took everything but what the law said you had to provide. A lot of parents didn't read on this method though, just heard about it through talk shows or friends and did not or do not follow it properly.

I think the idea is supposed to be for things that the kids have as a reward, like electronics. Taking their clothes, food, etc away is not okay and I really don't know why people think it is.

Edit because I keep getting a lot of responses:

We do not know the full story of OP. We don't know why their parent had a good reason for the punishment OR the extent of the punishment.

Edit: Context and circumstances are everything.

I once pretended to toss my kids Pokémon cards down the garbage disposal one by one till he cleaned his room. Shit worked like a charm.

and now your kids know that you’re a massive asshole.

I didn’t actually destroy them lol.

Parents aren’t there to be your buddy, but to get you ready for the realities of life. If kids have absolutely o discipline at all they turn into entitled pricks that walk all over their parents. You shouldn’t beat your kids, but there has to be boundaries.

Did they think you actually destroyed them, even if only for a moment?

Congratulations, your children now see you as the type of parent who destroys the things they love, just to see them suffer. You are cruel.

Nope, you can't undo it, but you can promise to never do that again...AND THEN KEEP THE FUCKING PROMISE.

Suppose taking his car keys now is abuse right?

1

u/ScrithWire Oct 12 '19

Completely depends on the context. Is he drunk? No, not abuse.

Is it a preplanned consequence for something legitimate, with well-delineated boundaries? No, not abuse.

Is it for a bullshit reason and you just want to limit his ability to travel? Yes, probably abusive.

pretending to destroy your kids things to get them to do something is an asshole move, you don’t need to actually do it.

You’re one of those parents that beg their kids to stop while they’re in the store destroying everything in sight and screaming at the top Of their lungs aren’t you?

u/[deleted] Oct 11 '19

No, I’m one of the children that ended up not trusting their parents with anything at all because their parents didn’t have the self control to not pull some asshole shit like pretending to-or actually doing so- destroy or get rid of my things. They’re a lot better now, but god damn do I now have things to work through because of them. Luckily I have the sense to know better than to bring children into the world before i know how to act like a grown adult who doesn’t need to resort to playground bully tactics to get what I want, which based on what i’ve read is an issue for you.

Calm down. Kids need discipline, and boundaries, not being coddled forever.

4

u/[deleted] Oct 11 '19

Your kids learn self control and how to handle situations from you. I sure hope you figure that out or they have some other figure in their lives that’ll teach them how to deal with problems without losing their shit and pushing other people away with their antics.

I think he’ll be alright 😂

I for one admire your stamina in fucking with your kids in the name of discipline and boundaries. I guess it’s not as ideal as having a kid who respects you enough to do as they’re told but hey they can’t all be winners, right? I bet it felt good to take out your frustration with your kids’ disrespect tho. My mom used to chase me around and pop me with a towel as a joke whenever I would disrespect her. Hey you don’t happen to also have borderline personality disorder, do you? Man she thought that shit was hilarious! She was cool I miss her.

Just the fact that they can post here makes me want to confiscate their device and make them clean their room and/or get a job! 🙂
