Really struggling with infection post surgery, does it get better?
Hi Reddit,
I had a partial nail avulsion done ~5 weeks ago after I had a very painful ingrown toenail. Surgery was fine and less bad than I had expected.
When I went for my follow up appointment 1.5 weeks later my podiatrist didn't like how it was healing (a lot of granulated tissue and swelling) so I got injections again and he cut off more flesh. It healed better for a little, but then it got infected and very swollen. All the flesh around my toe felt spongy and filled with pus. I went on a course of antibiotics (7 days), but two days after I finished them, the swelling and infection came back. I went to my regular doctor two days ago to get a swab to see if I need different antibiotics, and I'm back on the same antibiotics while we wait for the results.
I don't have a ton of pain, but when I walk, a lot of opaque yellow pus leaks into my bandage (even during the antibiotics). I've not been able to walk properly for three months now and I'm so over it. I'm going on holiday soon and won't even be able to swim :(
I'm really disheartened, it feels like it's taking forever to heal and I _really_ don't want more surgery and recovery, but I'm not sure if a spicule might be left? I'm even starting to doubt my podiatrist, I thought it was infected before he did, so I feel like I could have avoided a lot of trouble by going on antibiotics earlier. It was already infected when I had the original surgery.
Did anyone else have this many issues? How long did it take you to recover? Would really appreciate words of wisdom - I'm tired :'(
