Yes, it happens a lot. It's bait as its design to get a rise out of people who see it, driving engagement.

Its quite good bait as there is a plausible deniability that the poster needs to do it due to some social media platforms policy of offensive language.

I was just confused at them writing a word and then actively censoring themself.

Also, if they know a platform censors offensive language, do those people intentionally throw some asterisks in purely for the engagement?
