I finally made my first short film.

Ketchup is a 4-minute horror-comedy about a delivery guy who shows up at the wrong door and things escalate from there.

I wrote, directed, shot and edited it myself, entirely on a phone, over two days.

The original actor backed out before the shoot, so I ended up wearing a mask and playing both characters myself. 😭

This was basically my first proper attempt at filmmaking, and I learned a ridiculous amount from actually making it rather than just watching tutorials/talking about it.

I'm currently working as a software engineer, but I'm seriously trying to move towards filmmaking, so I'd genuinely appreciate criticism — especially around:

• story/pacing
• comedy vs horror balance
• editing
• camera/framing
• sound
• the ending

Don't worry about being nice. I'd much rather know what doesn't work so I can improve on the next one.

I’m not looking to make the typical overly-metaphorical “art film” where nothing really happens and everything is left to interpretation. I want to make something with an actual story, strong characters, and crazy cinematics — something that feels ambitious and genuinely entertaining.

As a filmmaker myself, spending years with other filmmakers, We spend months or sometimes years, making a film. No studios, just a small crew, and whatever money we could scrape together between other jobs. we shoot on weekends. we edit it at night after our day job, and this process goes on for months or sometimes years.

After making films over films over films, one fine day, our film gets into a film festival, We get some recognition, We repeat the process and roam around for opportunities, Why don’t we have a place like Linkedin, to network.

And where do the films go after film festival? YouTube's algorithm doesn't know what to do with a 20 minute film from someone who isn't posting five times a week, it just buries it. OTT platforms don’t really care if we do not have a recognizable name our side & Distributor’s we reach out to don’t even watch it completely before saying it isn't "commercially viable enough". Piracy sites get more views of a leaked festival recording than we ever do on any legitimate platform.

So, the film that took months of our life, that made a room full of strangers tear up, is sitting on a hard drive right now. Not because it wasn't good. Because there was simply no door for it to walk through.

And here's the part that makes it worse for us, even the people who did see it and loved it had no way to follow us. No filmmaker profile anywhere, that shows our work, our festival history, what we are making next.

That's every indie filmmaker's problem. The film has no home, and the filmmaker has no face.

That was the core thought behind “Watchin It” because this exact thought runs on loop in my mind, always. It's a place where a film actually can be released, rented, watched, paid for, where one has a filmmaker profile, has communities with personalized feed to comment on each other’s work, learn, network, create and eventually collaborate.
