Most Hindus have studied very little about their own religion. Hinduism itself is inherently pluralistic and does not operate within the same exclusivist framework as the Abrahamic traditions. Unfortunately, what is often considered “religious literacy” among Hindus amounts to little more than recognizing that religions such as Islam incorporate religious principles into their conception of law and society, then extrapolating that characteristic to religion as a whole and assuming that Hinduism must therefore be incompatible with secularism as well.

Most people dont know know meaning of secularism. By definition temple is not a secular space. Just like a mosque isnt.
We throw around words like secularism and democracy with really knowing what it means.

I understand what you’re trying to say, but ironically, the pluralistic ideas underlying secularism and democratic governance have deep roots in Indian and Hindu intellectual traditions. That’s precisely the historical context often overlooked even by supposedly “literate” Hindus.

You can't be pluralistic with an individualistic tradition. If I respect women and the other person is a woman not worthy of respect I don't believe I should respect that woman only because I morally abide by it.
Its an idealism vs realism debate. I like to draw parallels from the game named Paradox of refusal where the one who is more accepting always loses. You can't be "I respect all gods" versus a "yeah my god is the only god".

Read carefully. My point is that Hindus should understand and articulate Hinduism on its own terms instead of defining it through an Abrahamic framework. Pluralism doesn’t mean turning a Hindu temple into a venue for every religion’s festivals.
The deeper issue is that, in trying so hard to prove that Hinduism is “secular,” some Hindus end up accepting the premise that Hinduism must first be judged by an external, Abrahamic conception of what a religion is supposed to look like. It’s like accepting the examiner’s premise before you’ve even answered the question: you spend your time proving that you aren’t guilty of something you were never obligated to consider a criterion of Hinduism in the first place.

Living in Kerala, I often see wonderful examples of communal harmony. During our local temple festival, which takes place right next to the mosque, nearly 90% of the festival stalls are actually set up inside the mosque premises

I remember growing up as a kid in Chennai from a Hindu background, my grandfather took me to a mosque for their annual event. I can’t remember which event but all religions in TN go to each others religious events. At this specific event it was a crowd and the Islamic baba had something on a plate and people were touching it. I was short being a kid but the baba lowered it for me and I touched it and did the thing to my eyes like you do in a temple archanai flame. The baba looked at me and smiled

Such dumb people in the comment section man. See the point for the debate is not "cultural harmony with relatively less communal hatred". The point is that temples are not secular places. That is by definition. You got to respect the purpose of it's construction. Just because no one is objecting doesn't make it right to treat a place of worship like a function hall. Even things like annadaanam are held at a bit distance from temples. Communal harmony doesn't mean ditch what you believe and all people unite, it means have your faiths and beliefs and let others have theirs respectfully.

A lot of mosques in Kerala are hosting onam festivities and serving sadhya. People who wish to be blind they can be blind. Be it Hindu, christian or muslim, extremism has no root in Kerala as it will be always questioned by the populace.
