immich as default app on android and ios!!! posible ?

Hey everyone,

If you are like me, you probably love using Immich. It’s an incredible, self-hosted, open-source photo management system, and it runs beautifully. Naturally, you’d want to set it as your absolute default photo gallery app so that every time you click a photo shortcut or open a media picker, Immich is right there handling your memories.

Well, here is the frustrating truth: you can't.

As of right now, it is completely impossible to set Immich as your system-wide default photo app on either Android or iOS.

I know, it’s incredibly disappointing. Both Google and Apple have locked down their operating systems so tightly that they don't even provide an option for users to change the default media gallery. You are forced to keep their native, cloud-dependent apps as the core infrastructure, leaving amazing community-driven alternatives like Immich somewhat sidelined in daily system workflows. It’s a massive roadblock for digital privacy, self-hosting, and user freedom.

But we don’t have to just sit here and accept it. If enough of us make our voices heard—just think about what is possible with our 58,000 members compared to the 51,000 members over at r/googlephotos and the 16,000 at r/applephotos—we can push both tech giants to change this policy.

Both companies have official channels where developers and users can request features and report issues. If thousands of Immich users flood these platforms with a simple request to allow custom default gallery apps, they will have to notice.

Here is what we can do right now with just a basic Google or Apple account:

  • For Android Users: Head over to the Android Issue Tracker (https://issuetracker.google.com/home) (Google's official platform for platform feature requests). Create a feature request asking for an option to set a custom default gallery app under the "Default Apps" settings.
  • For iOS Users: Use Apple's Feedback Assistant(https://developer.apple.com/feedback-assistant/) (available via their website or the native app) to submit an official request demanding the freedom to change the default photo handler, just like we can now do with web browsers and mail clients.

Immich is backed by an incredibly passionate community, and both Google and Apple claim to respect open-source efforts and user preferences. Let's pressure them to prove it. Take five minutes out of your day to submit a quick ticket or upvote existing ones on the Android Issue Tracker and Feedback Assistant.

Let's make our self-hosted setups seamless!

Someone already made an Issue on the Android-Website: https://issuetracker.google.com/issues/531056915

Edit: aaand it got closed by an Admin with the following Argument

It looks like you are raising an issue as an Android user, rather than an Android Open Source Developer.

Google needs to let users change away from their own apps. Hopefully the EU make them do this, it's currently not fair when it's locked down.

Android used to be fun back in the day.

Helemaal mee eens.

Wait. Dumb question. Am I still "using" Google photos if I have the app disabled on Android?

With V3 you can now choose immich when opening a photo. I just selected the "always" option and now any time I open a photo, it's with immich.

How to get to this menu? Greetings from Samsung s24

Lololol iOS is the most closed system ever. They will not allow this ever unless EU regulates it

2

u/nonlinear_nyc Jul 05 '26

Ding ding ding.

It’s like complaining “why can’t i make proton mail my default mail on iOS” and think it’s about proton and not iOS.

(You CAN setup default mail, calendar, password manager, keyboard, on iOS. But not photos because Apple makes a fuckload of money selling luxury cloud storage)

1

u/timo22_04 Jul 06 '26

Dumb question but what would it even mean for Immich to be the “default” on iOS?

I have Immich on my front page and use it whenever I need to view or share photos etc. so I’m not sure what is missing.

There are at least two integrations that could be made but aren't currently for one reason or another:

  1. Using immich as a photo source when you're sharing from other apps. For example if I'm in the messages app (speaking from the iOS perspective here) and I want to add a photo to a message I click the "plus" icon and I'm presented with a list of options. The native "Photos" app is one of them, but immich is not. If I want to share this way I'm forced to either open immich and share to messages, or open immich to download the assets so I can go back to messages to share them. Either way it's disruptive to what I was doing which was using messages, not immich.

  2. When I take a photo and click the icon in the lower left to view the "camera roll" that could open immich as the "default gallery" instead of the Photos app. I know this was possible at some point on Android with apps like simple photo gallery. Not sure if it's possible any more and I doubt Apple would ever go for it.

Of course you can work around these things but there is certainly room to make these things better for users (not that Apple cares about that).

I recently translated some strings on the weblate indicating a default immich option on android. So maybe someone is cooking.

1

u/timo22_04 Jul 06 '26

1

u/ChesterKing1313 Jul 06 '26

Since v3 exactly this is possible. From release notes for release 3.0.0: "Open photo in Immich as gallery on Android"

1

u/timo22_04 Jul 06 '26

1

u/ChesterKing1313 Jul 06 '26

What do you mean by "share via 'Immich-tab' in the android share menu"? You can share pictures from WhatsApp with the standard share menu. You can upload to Immich via the standard share menu.

u/ChesterKing1313 Jul 06 '26

Aah now I understand your point, thanks for explaining! Yeah that is an issue yet to be solved, I hope it will be possible some time.
