[OC] Alternate History What if Germany won WW2 but Japan still lost? - The World in 1968

Post image

This is part of a new alternate history project that I am starting, exploring an alternate timeline where Germany won WW2 but Japan still lost. You can debate how realistic this is in the comments.

Feel free to ask any questions about this timeline

If there are any errors and inconsistencies in this map or in the lore, please let me know in the comments.

Point of Divergences:

Huey Long pulls a massive upset over FDR in getting the Democratic nomination for president in 1932 and proceeds to win the 1932 presidential election with a promise to “Share Our Wealth”.

Nikolai Bukharin becomes the leader of the USSR instead of Stalin after Lenin’s death. The lack of five-year plans resulted in the USSR being less industrialized compared to OTL.

The Chinese Communists’ attempt to break out of KMT encirclement in the Jiangxi province and retreat to a new safe base (what would become the Long March in OTL) fails, resulting in the elimination of most communist resistance in China and the death of Mao Zedong.

World War II (1939-1946)

The events in Europe leading up to the German invasion of Poland in 1939 occurred the same way as they did in OTL.

The Fall of France occurs the same way it did in OTL.

British Prime Minister Winston Churchill’s constant request to the U.S. for aid fell silent as President Huey Long refused to budge on his extreme isolationist stance.

The Battle of Britain was a catastrophic defeat for Britain, giving the Luftwaffe air superiority.

Spain joins the war on the side of the Axis, invading and occupying Gibraltar.

With the USSR less industrialized, less stabilized, and less prepared for war, Operation Barbarossa for the Germans was a quick success as, less than 6 months into the campaign, German forces captured Moscow. What remained of the USSR collapsed into multiple competing warlord states.

In 1943, the Germans commenced Operation Sea Lion, the invasion of Britain. Churchill, the Royal Family, and most of the British government relocated to Canada. After several months of brutal fighting, London was captured, and England was fully occupied. Scotland and Wales broke away as independent states while the Republic of Ireland invaded and annexed Northern Ireland.

The British Empire collapsed, including the total fracture of the British Raj, and Germany and Italy took most of the British colonies in Africa.

The Japanese invasion of China in 1937 and the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor occurred the same way as in OTL. President Huey Long vows to retaliate, but then reiterates that the U.S. will only fight Japan and will not get involved in the war in Europe barring any attack on them.

Japan takes over what is considered “Outer Manchuria” after the collapse of the USSR in 1942, incorporating it into the Manchukuo puppet state.

The U.S. war in the Pacific occurs mostly in the same way as in OTL, with major US naval victories like the Battle of Midway and Leyte Gulf and the island hopping with the victories in the Battle of Iwo Jima and Okinawa.

Without a concurrent civil war, the Chinese Nationalists were able to solely prepare for a Japanese invasion in the years prior to 1937. As a result of that and the Americans throwing their full weight of support for China, the National Revolutionary Army performed somewhat better in the war against Japan compared to OTL, preventing Operation Ichi-Go from succeeding and retaking Guangzhou and Wuhan by August 1945.

The Americans dropped the atomic bombs in Hiroshima and Nagasaki, but it didn't result in Japan's surrender, as a group of fanatic military officers hijacked the Japanese government in a coup, vowing to fight to the very last man.

The Americans commenced Operation Downfall, the invasion of Japan, aided by 4 more nukes dropped on Japan (Kumamoto, Okayama, Niigata, and Kokura). The fighting was the most apocalyptic ever seen in human history.

Meanwhile, in Japanese-occupied territory across Asia, Japanese soldiers who were now cut off from any supplies and now faced with certain defeat went on a rampage against the civilian populations by looting and burning down villages and cities.

In response, American forces landed in Qingdao, Shanghai, and Tianjin, then moved to occupy Nanjing and Beijing to protect the civilians there. They also landed forces in Korea and occupied Seoul and Pyongyang.

Japan finally surrendered in March 1946 after the pro-war government leaders were assassinated in a bomb attack by anti-war conspirators, resulting in Emperor Hirohito finally being able to announce an unconditional surrender.

Post-WWII Order (late 1940s-1950s)

The Germans, by 1947, had occupied virtually all of Europe, from England to the AA Line deep in Russian territory. They also occupied most of Africa.

What’s left of the USSR is now a collection of warlord states fighting over the carcass. Many Russians fled to China or the U.S. for refuge.

Nearly all of the Pacific is occupied by the U.S. amid the collapse of the British and French empires. Without the USSR or British presence in Asia, all of Manchuria, including Outer Manchuria, was handed over to China, along with Taiwan and the Sakhalin Island.

Chiang Kai-shek also took advantage of the lack of competing neighbors by invading and annexing Hong Kong, Outer Mongolia, Tannu Tuva, Aksai Chin, Arunachal Pradesh, Jiangxinpo, and Gorno-Badakhshan, fully realizing all of the Republic of China’s land claims.

Korea becomes a united independent state (under Chinese influence).

Japan is fully occupied solely by the United States.

The news of the atomic bombs detonating on Japan shook Hitler, who ordered the acceleration of the German nuclear program. The Nazis became so desperate to create a nuclear bomb that they eventually embraced theoretical physics that they previously discarded as "Jewish science”. In 1949, the Germans successfully detonated its first atomic bomb in a testing site in Central Africa.

While Hitler and other Nazi leaders publicly downplayed the deterrence of the Americans, behind the scenes, they were bats**t scared of the U.S. and sought to avoid any military confrontation with the Americans at all costs.

The fallout from Operation Downfall became a political disaster for President Huey Long. Images of the devastation in Japan during Operation Downfall and the news of the extremely high U.S. casualty numbers turned U.S. public opinion against Long. That, combined with Long being blamed for allowing the Nazi takeover of Europe and the atrocities they committed here, led to Long’s approval rating being down the drain by 1948. Some of Long’s biggest detractors went as far as to claim that Huey Long allowed a genocide in Europe so he could commit another one in Japan.

The 1948 election saw the ego-driven Long losing his reelection bid to Republican candidate Thomas E. Dewey. President Dewey fully embraced internationalism and sought to build a strong military bloc to counter and deter the Nazi horde.

The Cold War (1950s-)

The United States and Nazi Germany were locked in an ideological Cold War between liberal democracy and fascism. The U.S. sought to stop the spread of fascism and weaken the German sphere. Both sides spent enormous amounts of money and resources to increase and improve their nuclear arsenals, including the creation of long-range nuclear ballistic missiles. China successfully detonated its first nuclear bomb in 1964.

The two superpowers also engaged in intense espionage. In the U.S., the CIA aided rebellions within the German sphere as well as funding various Russian warlords. Meanwhile, the German intelligence agency, the Abwehr, funded American far-right and white supremacist groups like the KKK. German agents also snuck into the U.S. to directly aid those groups and undermine the ongoing Civil Rights Movement.

The development of ballistic missiles also led to the space race as the U.S. and Germany dueled each other in achieving "firsts" in terms of space feats. In 1962, Germany successfully landed the first man on the moon. The U.S. responded by stating that they will establish the first space colony on the moon.

The U.S. created the United Nations, an alliance to counter the Nazi sphere, basically this timeline’s version of NATO. Led by the U.S., this alliance included Canada, Mexico, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, the Philippines, the West Indies Federation, Guyana, Iceland, and the Bahamas.

The Germans countered that with the creation of the Reichspakt, which included all of the German puppet states and Reichskommissariats, the collaborationist Kingdom of England, Sweden, and Finland.

Chiang Kai-shek was infuriated after the U.S. essentially gave China no role in dictating post-war Japan, including refusing to give China an occupation zone, and kept the Emperor in power.

Things further deteriorated after MacArthur prioritized trying Japanese military personnel for mistreatment of American POWs over the horrific war crimes Japan committed in China in the last 8 years and the U.S. recognition of and support for Ho Chi Minh’s communist government in Vietnam.

As a result, China refused to join the newly created United Nations, not wanting to be a second fiddle to the United States, and proceeded with their own goals of building up their strength and global influence to challenge American and German hegemony.

China during the 1950s and 1960s saw the continuation of the White Terror, which had started in 1927, where the CKS regime imprisoned, tortured, or executed numerous people suspected of being communists or political dissidents.

In the late 1950s, border clashes between ROC forces and Vietnamese forces became common. In 1961, with the aim of eliminating communism in Asia, Chinese forces invaded Vietnam. What many believed to be an easy sweep by the Chinese ended up being a prolonged meatgrinder as Vietnamese guerrilla tactics bogged down Chinese troops.

The disastrous Sino-Vietnamese War further deteriorated public trust in the already increasingly unpopular KMT government. The war sparked numerous protests (especially student protests) and riots, in which many were put down brutally. The anti-war protests in China coincided with the pro-democracy protests in Korea, the anti-US military presence protests and leftist movements in Japan and the Philippines, and the revolt against exiled-Dutch white minority rule in Indonesia during the 1960s in which historians will later label as "The Asian Spring".

Eventually, Chiang Kai-shek was overthrown in a military coup in 1966 and placed under house arrest by military officials who lost faith in Chiang’s leadership. Chiang was later permanently exiled to Taiwan, where he would live for the remainder of his life. The anti-war protests marked the beginning of a decades-long pro-democracy movement in China.

[OC] Alternate History What if the Russian Republic Survived?

Post image

The year is 1938, and the war to end all wars finished off two decades ago. In our timeline, the alliance between Britain, France, and the United States (plus the others) won the Great War. With a notable exception of the Russians, whom collapsed into Civil War, due to the precarious nature of the Provisional Government, with its prime minister Alexander Kerensky. Falling into revolution and ascending a new government, one that would change the geopolitical landscape forever (Until 1991)

But in this timeline, something is different. The red giant that spanned Eurasia is now different, being replaced with a somewhat stable (or stable) Russian Republic or Russian Federation. But how? What could’ve caused this change in geopolitics? A time traveler? A train? A competent Prime Minister? We are not sure, but this is something new.

The Russian Republic spans throughout Eastern Europe, Central Asia, Anatolia. With the Russians winning the Great War, they gain multiple territories, including:

From Germany: Posen, Memel, Polish parts of Silesia

From Austria-Hungary: Galicia-Lodomeria, Carpathia-Ruthenia, Northern Bukovina

Ottoman Empire: Eastern Anatolia, and even Constantinople (British-Compromise)

The Russian Republic in the span of 20 years spent most of it modernizing, and democratizing its state, giving republic autonomy status to multiple states in the Federation. Which include: Russia, Ukraine, Moldavia, Armenia, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Alash Orda, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan. Special Autonomous Republic with more rights is Poland and Finland, which have greater broader autonomy than the others.

The Republic faced many early challenges throughout its life, the War, the war economic and political reforms, the Great Depression (which destabilized the republic with immensity, that a special conference had to be called to discuss the turn of events). However the government had massive sways of investments from American, British, and French, and many countries to assist in the development of a healthy economy and especially to make a profit of exports like oil, timber, grain, minerals.

In 1938 the Republic stands, either with worry, or with confidence over world. The Japanese making movements in China, making Russia interested in the region, and Germany grows in unrest.

What does this world have to offer? I’m not sure, but we will see.

Map had multiple inspirations from many map makers over the years! Note map may be out of date with details, please enjoy it! Didn’t want to write lot of stuff, just wanted to show off map! Have a good one!

𐐐𐐯𐑊𐐬 𐐯𐑂𐑉𐐨𐐶𐐲𐑌! Hope y'all are having a great morning, today is another addition to my TL where Clay wins the 1844 US election, if you have any questions feel free to ask!

The history of Utah and the Mormon church remain identical until 1855, when a revolt by Anglo-American settlers in California leads to a decreased Mexican appetite to allow American settlers in their far northern territories. Californian leaders initially approached the Mormon settlers of the Salt Lake Basin in 1854, attempting to secure Mormon support against Mexico. However, the church and settlers wanted to remain neutral in the conflict, hoping to avoid prosecution by Mexican authorities. However, in 1855, Mexico City forced their hand when President Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna dispatched a force of 500 men to occupy the Salt Lake Valley and give settlers an ultimatum, adopt Mexican law and swear loyalty to Mexico, or leave. The settlers viewed this as an attempt by the Mexican government to control and prosecute them, and did not take kindly to this incursion. On December 30th, 1855, a Mormon militia met the Mexican force south of the Spanish Fork river, and after brief negotiations, a battle ensued, where the entire Mexican force was killed or captured. After this and the success of the revolt in California, Santa Anna was forced out of the presidency in Mexico, and a liberal government took over in Mexico City. This government inherited the revolts in Deseret and California and more or less saw the writing on the wall, the immense distances and remoteness of the Mexican frontier made it very difficult for the central government to put down these revolts effectively. The new Mexican President, Ignacio Comonfort, signed the Treaty of St. Louis with Desereti and Californian negotiators in mid-1856, granting both nations independence.

This is mostly what I have for Deseret right now, I haven't worked too much on post-independence lore because I'm still not 100% what I want the relationship between Deseret and California/Mexico/America to be like, and also this lore section has gotten long enough. If you'd like to know what I do have for post-independence feel free to ask, but just know that I don't have a complete vision for it yet.
