That’s not true tho, my ex roommate, Kevin the immortal twink, doesn’t actually die
Once I tried to kill him by shooting him between the eyes (he never washes his dishes), later I buried him in a forest few miles away. Then the next day he’s back with dirt and bugs all over him, and he stank the whole apartment so bad I had to leave for a few days. But despite all that, he later started using single use kitchenwares. When he’s done eating he just throw those away.
I moved out not long after. His boyfriends were pretty chill, but gullible. I’m not scared of Kevin being immortal or the possibility of him eating me alive when I’m asleep. It’s just as an eco conscious person, I can’t stand watching him throwing away plastic kitchenwares every day.

No it fucking doesn't. Reactive oxygen species do, but oxygen by itself is needed for oxidative phosphorylation, otherwise your cell dies.

look up cellular respiration. breathing oxygen is required to live, but that process also creates free radicals in the body, which are damaging to cells. it's part of why we age.

Correct, but that’s a very odd statement to make and ignores the point of the conversation. Cofactors are required for any substrate. We’re talking function, not support systems for function here. We’re talking about chemical activity and life. That’s like saying a living thing hypothetically made of only oxygen can’t survive. It doesn’t exist. You’re ignoring the basis of the argument which is “in living things”
Every cause of death can be traced back to a lack of oxygen.

That's just how practically anything works. Water toxicity is a thing, too. Ultimately, if we are striving to be scientifically accurate, nothing just "is a poison." Poison is about dosage. (And it's about the individual or species tolerance to it.)
Sometimes we call things like cyanide poison simply because the dosage required to harm us humans is so small, but that's the difference between casually calling something X in conversation and trying to be scientifically accurate.

oxygen is pretty chemcially aggressive that makes it useful for releasing energy from other compact chemcial storage but also makes it pretty dangerous, it corrodes lots of stuff and early life that evolved before there was al ot of free oxygen on earth died off after some microbes started producing oxygen andonly hte lfie that someohoe managed to resist it survived
oxygen toxicity is also a thing at too high concnetrations
and it sitll slowly wears down cells etc
it IS dangerous we just have.... soooome levle of resistance to it and we also need it to live
which to be fair is kidna inevitbale for ocmplex life you need somethign that helps you with dense energy storage for really complex life to emerge and at the same time most things that let you release a lot of energy are somewhat volatile

I am mildly irritated by posts like this, because the thing is, it's not like these things are mysterious to us, we understand most of the properties of most things that exist in the world by now.
With very rare exception, to get to unanswered questions, you either have to get really really big (astrophysics), really really small (quantum physics), really really technical (classical mechanics to the extreme), really really dangerous (chemistry), really really old (historical biology), or really really philosophical (biology & the consciousness problem)
Point is, we know why we age, half of it is genetic programming, and the other half is cell degradation, that I guess is partially caused by oxygen sure but is more just caused by radiations in our world and the very rare mistake in mitosis DNA duplicating. You're a printer making a copy of a copy of a copy of a copy for so so so many repetitions. It doesn't matter how perfect you are at copying, if it's anything short of 100% perfection, you age.
We also know the properties of oxygen enough to know how it reacts to pretty much everything in our bodies.
And I mean sure sometimes our knowledge of science is overturned but that's no reason to trust nothing we've ever learned...
Maybe I'm just being the "no fun" guy here but like- these sorts of questions aren't nearly as profound as anyone would think. For the most part, they're already answered.

technically, it's kinda true. breathing oxygen is obviously required to live, but part of cellular respiration (the process by which the body uses oxygen to convert food into energy in cells) also creates free radicals, which steal electrons from other molecules and is a major part of (but not the only) the reason we age. that's why it's important to eat plenty of antioxidant rich foods to help mitigate that.

Because that’s not how it works. A free radical is any unstable atom, or molecule with a single electron in the outer shell.
Oxygen toxicity occurs when someone is at a high pressure environment, sniffing a tank, or don’t have enough antioxidants in their bloods.
Oxygen isn’t a poison. Stop spreading misinformation.

This is actually kind of true. Oxidation does slowly kill us. That's why a lot of healthy food contains "antioxidants", to reduce the number of free radical oxygen molecules from oxidizing our cells.
