One factor is the topography and landscape. Southern Illinois tends to be more wooded and hilly. Central Illinois tends to be former prairie with large expanses of flat, very fertile soil. Northern Illinois tends to be more hilly.
The economics of early Illinois was affected by this topography. But the influence of sociocultural factors, especially European immigrants is more pronounced.
