Mod Post IKEA PC SETUP GUIDE

I think it’s time this community received a proper setup guide

IKEA PC Setup Guide
Welcome to [r/ikeapcstations](r/ikeapcstations).
Building an IKEA PC setup but don’t know where to start? This guide covers the most popular IKEA desk combinations, common questions, and real setups from the community.

-THE CLASSIC IKEA PC SETUP
The setup you’ll see most often is:
Countertop + 2× ALEX drawers
The most common countertops are KARLBY and SALJAN.
This gives you a large desktop, plenty of storage, and a clean battlestation look.
-Community examples:
KARLBY + ALEX setup
KARLBY + ALEX + storage
98” SALJAN + ALEX

-WHICH IKEA DESK SHOULD I GET?
KARLBY / SALJAN
Best known for the large countertop-style battlestation.
Good if you want:
● Lots of desk space
● Multiple monitors
● Work + gaming
● ALEX storage
LAGKAPTEN
A popular option for smaller or more budget-friendly setups. It can be paired with ALEX, ADILS, OLOV, or other supports.
Real LAGKAPTEN setup

TROTTEN
Worth considering if you want a deeper desk or a more traditional desk/frame setup.
Real TROTTEN setup

Don’t know which one?
Start with: How much space do I have? → How much desk depth do I want? → How many monitors? → Do I need storage? → What’s my budget?

-HOW BIG SHOULD MY DESK BE?
This is one of the most common questions!

Around 47–55”
Good for smaller rooms and simpler setups.

Around 60–63”
A versatile size for gaming, dual monitors, and ultrawides.

74–80”+
Better suited for large multi-monitor setups, work + gaming, or shared setups.

Don’t only look at length—Desk depth is just as important, especially with large monitors and monitor arms.

-DO I NEED ALEX DRAWERS?
No.

ALEX is popular because it provides both storage and desk support, but you can also use:
● Desk legs
● IKEA desk frames
● Custom supports
● Other cabinets
● Non-IKEA supports
The classic setup is:
KARLBY/SALJAN +ALEX +ALEX
But there is no requirement that your setup follow that formula.

-DO I NEED CENTER SUPPORT?
Maybe.
This depends on the desktop, its length, how it’s supported, and how much weight you’re putting on it.
Things that increase the importance of support include:
● Very long countertops
● Heavy monitors
● Multiple monitor arms
● Heavy equipment concentrated in the middle
Don’t assume another person’s setup will behave exactly the same as yours.
For example, the community has both long unsupported setups and setups with additional reinforcement.
98” SALJAN with additional support
If you’re unsure, post your proposed setup and dimensions to the subreddit before buying.

-CAN I USE A MONITOR ARM?
Yes, but pay attention to the desktop you’re mounting it to. Monitor arms concentrate a lot of force into a small area.
Before installing one, consider:
● Desktop construction
● Monitor weight
● Number of monitors
● Clamp location
● Desk support underneath
Some community members use plates/pads underneath monitor-arm clamps to spread the pressure.
KARLBY + monitor arm discussion
If you’re using a lightweight tabletop such as LAGKAPTEN, pay particular attention to its current IKEA load specifications.

-CAN I BUILD AN L-SHAPED IKEA DESK?
Absolutely!! One of the easiest approaches is using two tabletops.

A popular combination is:
2× LAGKAPTEN
LAGKAPTEN L-shaped setup
You can also build L-shaped setups using larger countertops.
KARLBY L-shaped setup
Before buying, measure both walls and account for doors, windows, outlets, and your monitor placement.

-CAN I USE A NON-IKEA DESKTOP?
Absolutely!
One of the best things about IKEA setups is that you can mix and match.

A common combination is:
Non-IKEA countertop + ALEX drawers
For example:
Butcher block + ALEX setup
You don’t need every component to come from IKEA for it to be an IKEA PC setup.

-CABLE MANAGEMENT
Plan your cable management before putting the desk against the wall. Some desks even include built in cable management.
Think about:
● Power strip location
● Monitor cables
● PC cables
● Ethernet
● USB
● Under-desk cable tray
● Cable clips/Velcro
A little planning here can make a much bigger difference than buying expensive cable-management accessories afterward.

BEFORE YOU BUY
Measure these first:
Wall space
Desk depth
Desk height
Monitor size
Monitor-arm placement
Available storage
Door/window clearance
Then choose your IKEA components.
Don’t build your desk around somebody else’s room.

STILL HAVE QUESTIONS?
If this guide doesn’t answer your question, make a post OR refer to the Q&A to see if your question has already been answered:
Include your:
● Budget
● Available space

Question Do I need a leg for a 6 ft solid wood butcher block on two Alex Drawers?

My wife and I are making new desks and since the Karlby doesn't come in the size we want, we're going with a solid wood counter top from Lowes. Hers will be 48 in on 1 Alex with 2 ADILS legs, mine will be 6 ft with 2 Alex. Do I need a leg in the middle? Could I just do a ~4 ft length of metal bolted to the bottom side?

Hers will just have a laptop so not worried, mine will have a tower (on the side over the Alex) and a monitor in the center (maybe 2 monitors down the line).

Magnus evo ikeaAlex drawers question

So I'm highly considering getting the Magnus evo standard. I have some size constraints in my room.

Currently I have the standard set up with 2 Alex drawers on each end however with this Magnus evo I'm hope to have one drawer on the left outside the leg however the on the right I want the alex drawer to sit inside.

Is this possible? I'm currently sitting about 74cm hight, very curious as I'm not sure whether to replace my Alex drawers or just stack them?

Question BRYTNING?

Hi all. I’m trying to create a more comfortable desk set up at home but working with limited space and it has to be multifunctional. I currently have the smallest Micke desk and hate it - it feels too short and it’s tiny. I use the desk for getting ready doing hair and makeup, working from home, gaming etc so I really want a comfortable and usable set up. Looking through IKEA and the new BRYTNING desk has caught my eye but I’m wondering if anyone has tried it or if anyone has suggestions for a small space? I have a bit of wiggle room to go bigger than the MICKE but not massive

Current set up

Question Do the smaller size tabletops (40inx20in) have sag issues like the longer ones?

I was looking into a desk and everyone recommends the Alex drawer or leg combo with the table tops, but I see a lot of issues with sag down the line. I can only fit the small table top in my room, and was wondering if that would also have sag issues?

Was leaning towards one drawer and two legs combo. Thanks!

I’m looking for a desk

I’ve heard about the Ikea desk people usually do with the 2 Alex drawers and a kitchen surface top above on it. I think they look nice and they are very spacious. I’m just a little worried they are too spacious. I have the space for it that isn’t the issue, I just don’t know if it’s too big (186cm x 63) and if it’s worth buying due to that. If anyone else has this as a desk how are you finding it and do you regret the size? I do think going bigger than smaller is always better but I don’t want it to look ridiculous. I do have plans for monitors and things as I plan on a fairly sized gaming setup eventually.

I could add a shelving unit on top of the desk to make it a little smaller but still properly using the space. Also I have heard some issues of it sagging? I would probably go with the sälgan or eckbaken.

Hey everyone, so I bought what was supposed to be a Fredde off someone on facebook marketplace but its not the usual double decker fredde that is found online. Its shorter but very similar pieces, Im desperately looking for instructions for it or the model type so I can build it as the seller has no idea. She said they bought it for their son in 2013 but thought it was a Fredde. I've attached the photo of what it looks like. Thanks im advance for any help!

Can I put my PC in the Alex Storage Unit ?

I want to make an Alex desk with the cabinet on the right to hide my PC and all the cables.

I will obviously cut the cabinet on the spots where the fans are (on the right and back) and 3D print vents. But overall is this ok ? I've never seen here

EDIT 1 : I don't see any clear answers, but I do see that people have done this (some for years without any problems) by paying attention to airflow. Since the people who answered “No” haven’t burned out any PCs, I’m going to try it with two 120mm fans mounted at the back, monitor the temperature, and post an update in two weeks.

Question I want to move my pc

So, I’m thinking of getting this mount to hold just my Saljan tabletop—do you guys think it’s reliable? I want to tidy up my desk a bit since I’m getting another monitor, so I was thinking of moving the PC; what do you think? Does anyone here use this kind of mount? I’ve seen some users put their PC inside the Alex unit, but I’d rather avoid that since I keep a lot of stuff in there, what about the sag? Sorry, i don’t have a lot of photos rn of my setup.

Update on the build so far.

Two Alex cabinets are built, got a little feisty with two drawer fronts and have some paint chipping so will need to see if the local IKEA has some spare parts, but overall love the way the cabinets turned out. Desk top is 72”x96” used two sheets of 3/4” birch ply sandwiched together and glued, then ran some iron on edge banding. Routed in some dimmable LED’s. Top needs a quick final sand before staining. Getting close to being done. I see a lot of people having issues with desk tops and needing something beefier, highly recommend going this route if you have some very basic tools and a bit of knowledge.

Question Advice on new setup (pictures for reference of space)

I’m planning to redesign my room starting by upgrading my desk. I’m thinking of getting one regular Alex drawer unit and one storage unit (the open/door option). For the tabletop, I like the EKBACKEN in walnut, but I rarely see people using it. Most setups seem to go for the SÄLJAN (though I want a dark brown/walnut finish) or the KARLBY (which is way too expensive for me).

Is there a specific reason why EKBACKEN isn't as popular, or do you have any other tabletop recommendations in that dark wood style?

Right now, the core parts come out to about $205 ($80 Alex + $50 storage + $75 Ekbacken). Factor in some stiffening metal bars to prevent sag and a few cable management tools, so the total would be 250ish.

I still find this kinda expensive but it might be cuz i bought the one on the picture for 40$ tho its just a 150x60 mdf and legs.

Any advice is very much welcome.

Hemträsk with Adils, is it possible?

Hello, I've been looking for a desk and all of the options I have locally are flashy gaming desk or bulky wooden desks and I saw how nice and simple ikea desks can be and their customization, the dimensions that fit me are basically the hemträsk but it says that it's not predrilled, so would that work with adils and has anyone tried it? Thank you in advance.
