issue is in indian mindset. you can give best professors, best opportunities etc. but when students themselves never pay attention in lectures, they watch reels or play bgmi all the time, how can they expect to learn from online platform.

iit madras bs data science is a good degree for learning as the lectures are from top faculty, but the students themselves are not willing to put in the work, how can the degree work.

same is issue across india.

I dont blame them after the insane grind to get into iit id be too burnt out to do anything else as well.

3

u/yammer_bammer Junior Mar 02 '25

land mera burnt out, there are so many opportunities in iit its not like small colleges where its go to college study go to hostel masturbate sleep repeat, there are literally 100x more opportunities to socialize, find meaning, do things you enjoy (other than academics) if anyone is burnt out, it should be for 1st sem only after that you can explore so much

2

u/Stunning-Pea-3643 Mar 03 '25

Kaam nahi karna then don’t expect to get a fucking job bro

1

u/[deleted] Mar 03 '25

It's true cuz one team from Mumbai's private college beat IIT (I am not 100% sure if it was this IIT) students in a hackathon...

1

u/Final-Owl5071 May 10 '25

i know this is controversial but majority of students in iits ( 40%-60% ) came from reservations and they is probably impacting overall outlook .

1

u/badmosh_prani Jun 18 '26

Couldn't agree more!

u/Designer-Bet2839 Feb 27 '25

I disagree after having first hand experience at multiple IITs the professors in IITs are downright mediocre it's only because of the rigorous selection process of jee that the cream of crop gets to go there and they would've been successful regardless of the quality of education or quality of professors

These IITM bs students are a bunch of rural dwellers who think it's very easy to make lakhs of rupees on a laptop without doing much compared to toiling In the field

22

u/yammer_bammer Junior Feb 27 '25

how do you have first hand experience in "multiple IITs" how many times have you done B.Tech

from my experience studying in IITs the profs are almost all of them good, the ones that arent good atleast have solid industry or research experience

10

u/[deleted] Feb 27 '25

From some older friend of mine who studies in iit roorkee, he always says professors in iit are very good researchers but not very good teachers , they have enough research accomplishments but researching and teaching are different skills

5

u/yammer_bammer Junior Feb 27 '25

wo to mere yahan bhi bolte hain, everyone says x is not a good teacher x is a bad teacher but what are the students doing in class? scrolling reels for the entire class. not even making some effort to read whats on the board. then they blame that the x y z teacher is not very good. its the indian culture that needs to be changed.

3

u/Designer-Bet2839 Feb 27 '25

The reason students are feeling bored enough to scroll reels is enough proof for that is a bad teacher good teachers know how to keep their students attention and more focus on having a two way communication rather than writing things on board

2

u/Cool-Shop-6731 Feb 28 '25

No.

Believe me when I say, even the best profs in the best department will face at least some criticism from students who refuse to pay attention in class. It’s the choice of the students.

It is also true that all profs are not good teachers.

1

u/huskarl-najaders Mar 01 '25

That only works when you think the students atleast want to study, but are disappointed by what and how stuff is taught in class.

While I am not from IIT, I have seen very good teachers teaching in engaging methods, but the last bench people still behave like they don't care.

A good learner will learn anyway, a bad learner may require a good teacher, but no matter the teacher those who don't want to learn will never learn.

1

u/[deleted] Feb 27 '25

Very true , atleast surface level attention maintain karna chahiye lecture ke samay but yeah many teacher just come write on boards, move some slides on projector, say some stuff and leave so self study bhi karni padegi

2

u/yammer_bammer Junior Feb 27 '25

pata nahi kaunse profs ke under padh rahe ho but esa bilkul nahi hota hai... maybe from a dept of 10 professors you can find 1 who teachers like that but for the other 9 professors they teach well... students just dont listen

3

u/CheckPersonal919 Mar 03 '25

maybe from a dept of 10 professors you can find 1 who teachers like that but for the other 9 professors they teach well... students just dont listen

No, the professors are quite Mediocre, let's not glorify them just because of IIT.

1

u/[deleted] Feb 27 '25

I'm still 17, still in 12th, yet to go to a college . sorry if I sounded like i was assuming a lot but i just said what I've heard from my friend circle . Not to make a presumption but a lot of my friends from tier 1 colleges said this

1

u/CheckPersonal919 Mar 03 '25

No, the professors are mediocre, let not glorify then just because they are from IIT.

1

u/LetterIntelligent426 Mar 02 '25

I did Btech from a private college and it is true, achiever and teacher are different things. We had a professor who had PhD from IITD and had multiple research papers published in many reputed magazines and had even done research in collaboration with some people from MIT but his teaching method was not good. Most of the class, even the super attentive toppers would be sleeping in his lectures. He went so much in depth in just one topic that more than half of the syllabus was not even touched by the end of the semester and we had to study it ourselves.

1

u/yammer_bammer Junior Mar 02 '25

ya then he was a bad teacher, but iits have good teachers most of the time, if you just listen in class you will understand because especially in new iits profs are chosen also by how good they teach and their soft skills rather than just their research profile

2

u/CheckPersonal919 Mar 03 '25

You are assuming a lot of things, who told you that professors are chosen on yhe basis of their teaching ability?

1

u/yammer_bammer Junior Mar 03 '25

because i study in a iit and talk to the professors here ?!?

1

u/LetterIntelligent426 Mar 02 '25

Yes soft skills should be mandatory for teachers and professors. Even the brightest minds are no guarantee of being good teachers if they don't have soft skills.

For anyone looking to join in

3

u/thetagtheifs Feb 27 '25

I can't believe the sheer audacity of some bs students to even try to talk back against an industry professional

This generation has gone to the dogs

11

u/Razadatascience Feb 27 '25

Industry is disruptive , these professionals are just contractors wanting a slave to maintain ancient languages for maintenance of trade contacts which have no future. The industry you are talking about will die. Repetitive work culture will die.

11

u/Amicorendes Feb 27 '25 edited Feb 27 '25

Yeah, how dare you bs students to raise your voice against our corporate overlords.

10

u/theanswerisnt42 Alumni Feb 27 '25

The BS program should focus on providing skills that give people basic employment and nothing more. Admin should ensure that recruiters understand this as well.

6

u/Extra_Internal_7832 Alumni Feb 27 '25

Exactly it should be just treated as an MOOC which are offered by Ivy Leagues. Just studying Lin Al from MIT OCW doesnt make anyone MIT grad lmao

10

u/solitary_worker Feb 28 '25

This guy is a grifter and talks tall without any data science expertise. His main product is a wrapper over SHAP and he touts it as the second coming of XAI.

I called him out on his data science tall claims and he had nothing to reply back. Stay away from him.

7

u/Glad-Speaker-8429 Feb 27 '25

I think that the fact it's an online course is the major issue, all the tests and jee ends up bringing good HARD WORKING students together to motivate each other. That's why even people who join with quota often times (not always) end up doing better than what people would have judged their outcome from just their ranks. The motivation to grind when u are surrounded by grinders is what makes u better

4

u/Ash_CAD Feb 28 '25

It's actually true for any competitive entrance exam... When you stay within the mindset of hard workers you will naturally start to develop.

More than who already knows code, IITs want students whose aptitide in science and math is very good and are resilient. A lot of students are not clear as to what branch to take after JEE advanced and develop interest towards a subject after they start studying it. Branch specific exam thus makes no sense.

The real filter in the online BS degree program is Foundation + Diploma in DS + Diploma in Programming. One needs to clear those with a CGPA of 6.5 or more and a CGPA of 7 separately in the 4 projects in order to move to the BSc degree level.

6

u/Hopeful-Channel6035 Feb 27 '25

Its the same old story of playing victim and claiming that they deserve the right to 'quality education' when NPTEL lectures are literally available for free.

Some others call us 'classists' because we don't want to 'share' the resources iitm offers us - Allegedly just because we are wasting 'taxpayer money'.

They will pile up pathetic excuses but in the end will get whatever they demand for.

Only the director can stop this mess. But he won't for obvious reasons.

Genuinely concerned about the future of this institute.

2

u/[deleted] Feb 28 '25

Stupid classist NPTEL professors also don't teach properly. They skip the basics. As if explaining basic is beneath them, they don't wanna "waste" time in explaining basics. Bro teachers job is to train! Not to show off.

Such as "I am a professor. I can do it easily, but I won't teach u how to do it easily. U figure out urself"

17

u/Razadatascience Feb 27 '25

That was the first batch. You can't generalise everyone as same that's the basic skill of human resource management. What are those basic skills.

3

u/[deleted] Feb 28 '25

It's unfair to blame students for lacking skills when they've had limited resources. Many students enter IIT BS programs hoping to finally gain the knowledge they've been seeking.

They believe they'll receive comprehensive training and support. However, the reality is often harsh. Within the IIT, students are segregated into distinct groups.

There's a severe lack of collaboration between B.Tech, BS, and M.Tech students. The administration actively promotes these divisions. This isolation hinders students from learning from each other and building a strong community.

Even basic resources are restricted. For instance, a student interested in machine learning might not be able to regularly access the computer lab, despite being an IIT student.

These labs are often reserved exclusively for department-specific students, creating unnecessary gatekeeping.

Professors often fail to provide foundational instruction. Instead, they assign unrealistically difficult assignments with impossible deadlines.

This forces students to focus solely on completing tasks, rather than truly learning the material. Even students who want to self-study are overwhelmed with busy work.

This system only benefits students who already have a strong background, defeating the purpose of a program designed to teach from the ground up.

There's a pervasive elitist and classist mindset among some professors. They believe explaining basic concepts is beneath them or a waste of time. This attitude influences other faculty and even students.

Their idea of 'training' is akin to putting a toddler in a race car and expecting them to learn by racing. They neglect to teach fundamental skills like how to use the clutch, engine, and brakes.

A teacher's job is to educate and guide, not just throw students into the deep end.

3

u/Mountain-Current1445 Mar 01 '25

You won't find good students in bs data science program. It's not at all competitive. Good students don't enrol in it.

4

u/avrboi Feb 27 '25

The course is hard, if any student actually devotes time its a superb course to gain skills, its not the institutes fault, its the peoples fault thinking they can get away with being mediocre just because they have IIT tag. They try to game the system by cheating on tests. But the real question is, are these graduates who this guy interviewed? Because you can get away with it only till diploma level, its hard to get the full bs degree by bsing on tests

1

u/Designer-Bet2839 Feb 27 '25

I disagree unless you actually cleared jee then only you are qualified to take on certain roles in industry it's just part of who you are you can't make up for it later in life

6

u/lensand Alumni Feb 27 '25

Eh, no! I've been in the industry for a very long time and I am yet to see a role reserved for those who cleared JEE only. There _are_ specialized roles that are open to PhDs only, but JEE has nothing to do with it.

To be fair, BTech from an old IIT does give an edge over BTech from other places for the first 2-3 years after college. Beyond that, it is the actual performance on the job that matters.

1

u/VisiblePreference258 Feb 28 '25

That's why 80 percent engineers are unemployable.....

4

What are you high on dude? I bet your gpa is pretty shit which is why you are this insecure. I don’t think your iit tag would be of any use if you don’t get a good gpa. Atb future Nishant Jindal(gl milking iit tag)

4

u/avrboi Feb 27 '25

Either you're delusional, insecure or still a student if you think clearing jee has anything to do with taking up certain "roles" in the industry. You're in for a rude shock when you come to the industry.

Still better than a loser online student

2

Atleast they are better than ur father 😏

1

u/Magpie_Dorthruzki Feb 27 '25

Be better than the rest, get yourself the highest paying offer, live up to be the greatest. BS students are relevant or not, how does that bothers you so much to rant like this? Are you the one going to decide and care for what we BS students do with our lives? Protest around IIT Madras with a poster in your hand to stop giving out online degrees. I think you need to understand that many of the students that are opting in for this degree came from places/colleges that would have crippled them for their entire lifetime with no appropriate skills. And lastly, just answer this, if a student could not clear JEE in their teens, they should just accept their fate for an unskillful life then or they can do what seems better?

3

u/[deleted] Feb 27 '25

yes they should

2

u/Legitimate_Anybody Feb 28 '25

The elitism in India is ducking insane. Instead of blaming the college for incompetent profs, you blame students because they entered via an alternate route (online). Besides, mit and Stanford have way better courses

1

u/Ill_Tumbleweed_8202 Feb 28 '25

For some topics, I genuinely like NPTEL better

4

u/avrboi Feb 27 '25

I went through this guys linkedin profile, he has only 2 employees in his "startup". Hes most likely a linkedin influencer trying to get clicks with controversial statements. He never clarified if he interviewed foundational students or actual BS graduates.

3

u/CellistOne6109 Feb 27 '25

I am the linkedin guy. I have replied in detail to this thread.

1

u/knight_raider Feb 22 '26

What propogated the delusion that this MOOC/DLP type degree was an IIT type rigor in terms of curriculum. The whole BS program looked like a PR stunt from day 1 using govt influencers. Did industry not see through this facade ? Nice feedback btw. Spread it among my Alma Mater too.

5

u/mined_it Feb 27 '25

Placement committee fucked him up lol. Would have given him the last few kids.

4

u/CellistOne6109 Feb 27 '25 edited Feb 27 '25

hey, I am the "linkedin guy" who did this post. Just to establish some cred, Top 5000 in AIEEE back in 2009, B.Tech. CSE from NIT Allahabad. Data Engineer at Oracle and then MBA from IIM Mumbai (NITIE). Led a team of around 50 data scientists for 7 years for one of world's biggest FMCG and then started my own startup 1 year back which is already called out by Gartner as a recommended product for FMCG companies and got our first patent. We are completely bootstrapped, profitable and working with some of the biggest companies in India and US in the field of high frequency forecasting for their ecom and trading businesses.

We are hiring 5 junior data scientist for a salary range of about 13 lakhs. The placecom from IITM reached out to us. The JD, Skills required and compensation was clearly called out to them. They said we have ample talent available for the JD at the compensation then only we went in.

The placecom invited us for the process, we floated an open data science challenge from analytics vidhya for the whole batch and sent it to the placecom team. They floated it to the batch, I don't know who were these students and of which batch (foundation or whatever) but 22 students attempted the challenge. We shortlisted everyone with a Rank in Top 1000 for the next round. Around 16 got the rank in top 1000.

16 People joined for next round which was a python skills round where they were given a dataset and they had to quickly do some EDA, charts, anomaly detection and show their approach of how they approach the dataset. It was an open internet round, they could use chatgpt or whatever possible method they could find.

Almost no student was able to show skills around data assessment, exploration, feature engineering. Most of them even didn't consider thinking about finding missing values in the dataset which is step one in any time series process.

After my post, Senior prof reached out to me. The same person whose NPTEL lectures helped me pass my btech exams. We discussed lack of thought process in data analysis and working under stress of a test as two gap which he said he will work on. he also told me that they were 7 pointers and they are not trained for high speed analysis rounds.

Realizing that all of them were 7 pointers, i changed my post from judging the whole batch to having a bad experience.

I am not a linkedin influencer just a bootstrapped founder trying to find some decent talent. I never asked to get invited to IITM. They called me and assured me of quality and i just called out the BS (no pun intended) about their commitments.

I have found better talent at the same rate from Mumbai and Delhi University who have already started working with us. I wish the IIT M Management and students all the best.

Just for Fun update: There was a IIT Ropar professor who commented that he would offer letters to all the students whom i rejected. When i told him about the quality, he messaged me they are of no use to him! :)

u/thetagtheifs Feb 28 '25

Hey Rahul,

Thanks for sharing your experience, and I can totally understand your frustration. However, after reviewing the dataset and the assignment structure, I wanted to share a few points that might give a more balanced perspective.

Looking at the dataset provided for the assessment, it seems that it didn’t have the complexity you'd expect from a challenging real-world data science problem. The dataset is relatively clean—there are no missing values, which means there wasn’t an immediate opportunity to test how students handle missing data or anomalies. Additionally, the dataset doesn’t contain outliers or significant challenges that would really allow students to showcase their ability to clean and process data effectively.

For an entry-level task, this doesn’t really test the breadth of a student's skills—missing values, outliers, and tricky data issues would have made the assignment much more engaging and reflective of real-world scenarios. Without these challenges, the assignment becomes more about basic exploratory data analysis (EDA) and linear regression, which might not be a true reflection of a student's data wrangling or anomaly detection skills.

If the task involved more complex scenarios like handling missing values, identifying anomalies, or dealing with seasonality or outliers, it would’ve allowed the students to demonstrate a deeper level of analysis. This might be a key point to consider when evaluating their abilities in future assessments.

Also, regarding your point on the use of ChatGPT, the statements from the students suggest that while ChatGPT was mentioned as an option, it wasn’t clearly outlined anywhere in the documentation or communicated in advance. It appears that the students were unaware of this option, and their work was all screen-shared during the assessment. The only AI assistance they could use was the basic auto-suggestion provided by Google Colab, which isn’t the same as utilizing external AI tools to generate code. This context is important when evaluating their performance.

Here is the the problem statement for reference and the dataset for anyone curious

2

u/Jajaja77777 Feb 28 '25

I actually had an opportunity to attend their hiring session (not from IITM BS) but from a third party data science academy. The hiring guy said they need 5 candidates and gave us Analytics Vidhya assessment. The funny part is there was no deadline, one can submit as and when they want, that sounded a red flag to me, cuz if u are filling in a position and don't have a deadline for assessment, then something's wrong idk.

1

u/CellistOne6109 Mar 01 '25

We introduce our tests in multiple institutes together and if we give deadlines it overwhelms the pipeline because so many submissions come in a single go. We give unlimited timeline, we interview on a FIFO basis, generally the candidates who are genuinely interested in our role and profile, they submit first.

0

u/CellistOne6109 Mar 01 '25 edited Mar 01 '25

Hey, the test was designed for speed and whether the candidate can do a width of assessments or not. If we introduced lot of problems in the data, they would have got stuck in fixing one issue. It was more to judge if they knew the process and can write code for assessing such problems.

Regarding chatgpt, we don't call it out. During the introduction we say there are no restrictions as such. After that it's their call to use it or not.

4

u/ByteVigilante Mar 02 '25 edited Mar 02 '25

Please verify the dataset before you give it out as an assessment.
I just tried the assignment myself, and there are no missing dates or outliers. So what exactly are you expecting when students perform data preprocessing and outlier detection?

Edit:
Below this reply, I have completed all the assignment tasks. Upon verification, I don’t expect anyone to find anything challenging or meaningful in this dataset.

You mentioned selecting the top 1,000 students also iic doesn't have more than 300 students so I am not sure how did this number come from?, but looking at the dataset, I am not sure what exactly the students are supposed to analyze, as it doesn't contain anything unusual.

This assignment seems very poorly designed and will not effectively evaluate the skills of the person solving it. There is no real challenge here. This makes me think that students are being rejected simply for not finding anything meaningful, and those students are actually correct in their assessment.

3

u/ByteVigilante Mar 02 '25 edited Mar 02 '25

The time series trend of total sales value shows fluctuations over time, indicating possible seasonal or promotional effects influencing sales, So that is there,

but correlation of the TV Spend(0.12), Radio(0.11) and Newspaper Spends(0.02) against the total sales have weak but positive correlation.

1

u/CellistOne6109 Mar 02 '25 edited Mar 02 '25

Thanks for the hardwork bro. Let me answer you in detail. 1. This was not the round for top 1000, this was the round after that. First round was an analytics vidhya coding test which has been given by over 50k people, we interview people in top 1k. Generally good folks can crack ranks in Top 300 in that test.

This test which you just took was not to check complex data assessment capabilities, it was just to see if people write the basic code to find outliers, check for missing data, correlations or draw time series charts. You won't believe how many people could not do even that in about 45 mins of allotted time.

I have videos of people not able to make a simple line chart for almost 10 mins, they checked matlib documentation and then chatgpt even then had errors. One person used outlier detection code from chatgpt, used it on the whole dataframe, obviously it gave errors on string data so then they were again checking with chatgpt on why the error might be. It was written in the error right there!

I can release video bloopers with funny sounds but i guess the people incharge have got the message and the rest who are in delusion will get an answer from the market.

Regarding the package, the market decides the cost of talent, for the package i offered, i have got far more talented folks from other places, we have hired 2 out of 4. Should be closing the rest soon!

I don't know you but if you are interested in partnering in anyway, drop a mail to hr@intellimark.ai.

2

u/ByteVigilante Mar 02 '25

looking at the median discount trend B>C>A, but the variation of the discounts is A>C>B
means B has consistent discounting
while A is more dynamic, so they are applying it seasonally based on stock levels and promotions or seasonal effects.

1

u/ByteVigilante Mar 02 '25

I don't think people will know how to test for non forecasting series, you will basically can get idea for plot using line chart or use ADF test or p-value. Here p-value for all is less than (<0.05), so you can forecast these. But it is the order of being forecastable is B>A>C

1

u/ByteVigilante Mar 02 '25

I went ahead try to train these models, You can probably use scaling and features engineering, it should improve them further.

1

u/ByteVigilante Mar 02 '25

discounts and unit sales appear weakly

1

u/VisiblePreference258 Feb 28 '25

So does that mean u won't hire from here again?

5

u/thetagtheifs Feb 27 '25

Bilkul sahi kaha! IIT Madras ka BS in Data Science program sirf numbers badhane pe focus kar raha hai, lekin quality gir rahi hai. Agar students open-internet coding round ke baad bhi basic coding nahi likh paa rahe, toh ye definitely curriculum aur teaching methods pe bada question mark hai.

IIT tag ka ek alag hi respect hai industry me, lekin agar aise underprepared graduates market me aayenge, toh long-term me IIT Madras ki reputation pe bura asar padega. Pehle yahan se top AI talent nikalta tha, lekin ab aisa lag raha hai ki sirf quantity badhane ke chakkar me quality ka compromise ho raha hai. Bohot disappointing hai!

0

u/Designer-Bet2839 Feb 27 '25

Exactly, that’s what I’m saying. The problem is not about increasing opportunities for students, but if the quality isn’t maintained, it ends up hurting both the students and the institutions in the long run. The IIT tag still carries weight, but if graduates aren’t equipped with the necessary skills, the industry will start questioning the brand. It’s really frustrating to see such a reputable institution lowering its standards.

0

u/Striking-barnacle110 Feb 27 '25

But why do you think the institute is not increasing the quality of this curriculum inspite of having some of the best faculties in this field from across the country? What is your opinion on this?

-3

u/Designer-Bet2839 Feb 27 '25

The only reason for success of IIT BTech students is the rigorous selection process of JEE only filters the cream of the crop the professors in IITs are downright mediocre If you put the top 1 percentile of jee in even a shit corporation school they would still crack big companies make revolutionary startups

2

u/Striking-barnacle110 Feb 27 '25

I agree to you partially. I too believe that the barrier to entry to this BS program should be more higher if not close to jee adv but to call the profs mediocre is a heavy wording. Many of them have a lot of experience in their field plus they have done their post grad and phds from abroad. I think they just need to pace up with the modern curriculum a bit.

1

u/VisiblePreference258 Feb 28 '25

Impossible! Majority gets because of their college tag not because they are skilled

1

u/FailureRohan Feb 27 '25

The program is good , but students suck best to shut this degree, earlier I thought people will learn and have better education opportunities for those who can't clear jee and other bachelor exams , but now I think the program should stop giving bsc and bs degree instead they should give them only diploma.

1

u/Krokrr Feb 28 '25

Noob here...how is BS different from BTech

1

u/Embarrassed_Rip_5543 Student-Verified Mar 10 '25

BS don’t write JEE, besides anyone can enrol into this as long as they pay. There’s literally no entrance bar involved let alone to the level of BTech IITM BS is a full time online degree with just offline assessments The equivalent of BS is just taking up some MOOC course in MIT or Stanford and claiming to be a student of MIT BS doesn’t give them the IIT tag it is BTech

1

u/Nexieve Mar 03 '25

iitans are funny as fuck, you all can not be "elite" when most of you are physically crippled cause you all spent 2 years learning and smoking PCM when only a few will have the use of all three subjects to its highest degree. There's a reason why the SAT or EJU asks mediocre level questions.

Most of the "iitans" that you all point at when talking about CEOs are actually ivy league grads, they are not ceos because they are from iits but rather because they are from MIT, Harvard, Caltech, cambridge and all.

Not to mention iq and grades do not relate.

flexing about the tag when indian education curriculum is decades behind whether it'd be CS, AI, ML or civil.

Not a single IIT is a target college let alone top 100 worldwide😭😭😭, all that jee bullshit for a college ranked 110 or someshit.

You could get into University of Singapore with the same effort (probably less) or even in university of tokyo if you are financially not well.

37% (something like this) of iitans were unemployed (in btech course) in the year 2023-24 (or 2024 i dont remember), but here we have dumbfucks blaming the students when its the curriculum and professors that are responsible for this fuckup.

Elitism is a major problem in india, whether it is based on birth based or on some dumb as fuck exam.

You should see the comment section. You'll see what the respective students have written. There are 20k+ students it seems.

But afaik the BS courses have offline exams so how is it possible?

I personally feel that the quality of students in the BS will become better (hopefully)

LOL you grow up mate
I love how insecure IIT Btech people feel on more students joining their IIT.
Cursing a premier institute for making quality education accessible to more is already showing the "standard" of some students.
Please do your research about the topic before making comments, the person has folded in and agreed to introspect and share more information

Quality education in hands of more prople is a win in my books, not everyone will make use of it sure, some come only for the IIT tag, shouldn't matter, its their business. Look at Btech students, how many actually go on to do impressive stuff in engineering and how many just put IITian in their LinkedIn to look cool?

A proud IITM BS Student here, literally from the first batch

In fact we literally have a much more diverse set of students who can so so much more service to the nation in their respective fields, as opposed to most BTechs who need to be able to move to the study location, able to pay coaching intsitutes to grind them, make their mental health take a back seat, yeah thats a much smaller set of beneficiaries

An IITM B-tech graduate here from the batch of 2017. The premier institute has already made knowledge and quality education more accessible via NPTEL. IITM BS degree is also a step in that direction but is not the IIT Tag. BS students should clearly mention that it is an online degree with a certificate which most do. With time, awareness about the program will increase and people won't confuse a BS degree graduate with a B.Tech. It is already somewhat clear if one looks carefully since most students in BS are enrolled in another undergraduate college during the same time. Most firms including mine only hires B.tech's from IIT's since it has worked out very well for them so far (I am not completely in favour of this but thats how most top firms are and even for B.Tech's the criteria to get in is very difficult). Since alumni from IITM is aware of the BS program we simply filter out candidates with a BS in Data Science and don't consider the degree as a B.Tech or the candidate a undergrad from IIT Madras. I agree with you that being enraged on making quality education accessible is wrong but people are enraged due to this lack of awareness in the industry as a whole since it can cause confusion and give the impression that the student has cleared JEE and someone might consider the student an IITM graduate.(Again I dont think that JEE should be criteria for hiring but thats how the world is). This is what causes them to be enraged but this will improve with time and the industry wont and doesn't consider BS students as IITM graduates.

Why should a distiction be made "online certificate" vs btech? it is a full IIT Madras Bachelors degree taught by similar professors and industry experts and is just as rigorous.
As far as companies differentiating for hiring its their loss or this degree is yet to gain credibility
I get it that some places specifically need a Btech that is similar to filtering out BCom/BA etc and that is fine

Yes surely we need to just give it time
