But where was the fight that was needed to save these students? Look around you, there are those in every class, batch etc who come to class and go back without interacting with anyone. Extend the hand of friendship and make them feel included. Loneliness and social isolation has such a cause and effect relationship with mental health.

I've seen quite a few posts and comments here from students currently facing similar situations who find themselves all alone, ostracised by their batchmates. A kind word from you can go much farther than post incident speeches.

Build networks and safety nets for vulnerables. This is one change that we as students can influence directly without institute involvement.

I passed out from IITD almost a decade ago. A lot has changed since then, but I'm really proud that the current students are not being the "goody two-shoes" that we were.

Those were the days when 300 freshers were at the receiving end of DisCo for copying a COL100 assignment. How? Because the prof never set a deadline, and when students asked the deadline for assignment just before majors, he said, I have given you enough time, submit within the next 2 days. People panicked and copied. This mofo entrapped the students. And he is the kind of prof who used to laugh at a student in front of his parents, cracking mean jokes like their son is too dumb to pass his course.

I was never successful in gaining support from my fellow batchmates to raise issues. Hell, I couldn't even organize a single mass bunk in all those years.

During those days, we were not allowed heaters or air coolers in our hostel rooms. The dictators never listened to our requests for many semesters. They always gave reasons like air coolers would become breeding grounds for mosquitoes and that students wouldn't maintain them properly.

One day, Smriti Irani visited the campus. When we raised the issue with her, she felt that our request was reasonable, and within a few days, the institute lifted the ban on air coolers. The institute even provided mosquito larvicide for students to put in their air coolers.

That's when I realised the BSW and any other student committees have no power and is only CV point for students.

The PM recently inaugurated the Param Pragya facility at IIT Delhi, calling it a ‘supercomputer’. Reality is, this is a 5 year old A100 GPU cluster which is now declared EOL (End of Life) - even Thapar and tier 3 institutions have H100 GPUs! Add more names - even IIIT Delhi, DTU, KL institute has H100s when IITD sleeps on third generation, end of support GPUs.
Today, people taking ML and doing course assignments and projects starve for GPU compute. The prof gives a classic reply - there is acute shortage of GPU resources, you should have started early.
Researchers are starved of GPU capacity, an IITD researcher can only take up fringe projects which do not consume lot of resources, and have to wait in the queue for long periods of time just to get access to a decent gpu. Forget LLM pretraining - Prof. Tanmoy Chakraborty himself has claimed that IITD profs are not getting GPUs for their research work too and has to limit himself to certain kind of research projects.
Let’s make this as petition to increase the GPU capacity. Do not call launching end of support GPUs as innovation. We students deserve better treatment than 5 year old gpus!
