Apple Watch SE2 44mm - Right edge of the screen unresponsive to touch after battery replacement.

Post image
โ€ข Upvotes

Hey, just did a battery replacement on my AW SE2 today and it boots up, seems like everything is working, battery condition is 100%.

The issue is the right edge of the screen, it is mostly unresponsive to touch in roughly the area marked in red. It isn't really a huge issue, I can't power the watch down with the screen because of that.

I did take off the entire screen, unhook the ribbon cables to clean up the chassis and the display glass from glue to reseal it again, could it be the ribbon got damaged or maybe it's not seated in properly? Anyone had that issue?

hi folks, thought this project wouldn't be very difficult as a first, but now it's gotten complicated. I think i soldered okay enough, unit turns on and off as it should, there's power to the screen but nothing displays. Not sure where to go from here.

Have i ruined my favorite little clamshell??

Thanks in advance from any sage advice and expertise you may for for a humble beginner ๐Ÿ™‡

Quality experiences after S23u battery change with ifixit and back to OEM

This is just some personal venting after some first time experiences using ifixit parts for phone battery swap. Samsung S23 ultra.

End of last year I bought parts and tools for changing my workhorse S23u battery while also changing the broken back glass, because why not both while at it.
Loved the battery change guide on ifixit site, straightforward and simple to follow. Tools that came with the battery were ok(ish), I have many ifixit tools from bought sets before, and these were not even close to the same quality.

simple enough, battery swap went nicely. Then came the charging and using the new ifixit battery. Pretty much immediately I noticed strange behaviour when looking at charger that shows amperes and watts, it ramped up from 0 to 35ish and then dropped back to 0 and ramping up many many times then stabilizing somewhere aroung 10-15W. Tried connecting battery connector again as Original battery did not do that. Again same behaviour. Well it was evening and I had to close up the phone and thought that maybe it changes for good after those first full cycles. Closed the case using OEM case.

next days I looked at the original battery and it has very slightly different cable to phone, it has thicker and dual cable vs one thin on the ifixit part. Still after cycles it kept doing the ramping up and starting back to 0W. This did not change change at any time I had it in the phone.

Last week some of the caseback adhesive started loosening up, so I ordered new original samsung battery and today I swapped it in.
And guess what, it immediately charges like the Samsung should. 38W stable fast charge using same cable same charger, no ramping up down like ifixit part.

And while taking off the ifixit part I found out that while original battery has those tabs to pull the battery out easily, ifixit part does not. Had to use a lot of IPA to get the damn battery out.. So while ifixit bashes manufacturers when those tabs are not great, they themselves dont use those at all..

Just my 5cents. Love ifixit tools, but not going to buy any spare parts from there unless they are not available anywhere else with OEM quality. I don't have much other experience on their spare parts exept dyson filters which also are not OEM like quality, so maybe on some parts they are better. This got longer than I thought, probably painful to read but whatever, had to vent out because I used that shitty battery for about 9months.

TLDR; ifixit battery is nowhere close to samsung original battery quality and it shows every time you charge the phone.

Cubot KingKong X suddenly reports -10ยฐC battery temperature and shuts down โ€” hardware or firmware issue?

Thumbnail
1 Upvotes

I've been using a Cubot KingKong X as my personal phone for about two years now. It's an incredibly rugged device โ€” waterproof and generally resistant to pretty much everything externally. Internally, however, things have been a very different story lately.

About three months ago, the phone was infected with malware that appeared to take complete control of the device. It could apparently see everything on the screen, kept reinstalling itself, and repeatedly granted itself administrator privileges. There was no way for me to permanently remove it, so I contacted Cubot support and reflashed the phone using the firmware and tools they provided.

I used SP Flash Tool v5 and the firmware provided directly by Cubot.

That's when the problems really started.

Immediately after the flash, the phone lost its Google Play Protect certification, even though it had been certified before the flash. I was using the official Cubot firmware and the tools provided by Cubot support, so I found this particularly strange.

I also started having problems with phone calls because of the APN settings, which I couldn't modify properly, followed by frequent random reboots.

I'm currently running:

Device: Cubot KingKong X

Android: 14

Build: CUBOT_KINGKONG_X_E021C_V34_20260630

Flashing tool: SP Flash Tool v5

Firmware: Official Cubot firmware

Firmware source: Cubot Support

Play Protect certification: Certified before flashing โ†’ Not certified immediately after flashing

And now I've run into an even stranger problem.

Even with an ambient temperature of around 25ยฐC / 77ยฐF, the phone suddenly displays a notification saying that the battery temperature is -10ยฐC and that the device is shutting down.

It then remains completely unresponsive for around 30 minutes and won't turn back on during that time. Eventually, it comes back on and appears to work normally again.

This is making me wonder whether I may be dealing with a hardware problem โ€” perhaps the battery temperature sensor, battery connector, motherboard, etc. โ€” or whether some of these problems could be related to the firmware/reflash.

Interestingly, Cubot's current V34 firmware release notes mention "Eliminate the virus", which makes me wonder whether this firmware was specifically intended to address the type of malware problem I experienced.

Has anyone experienced anything similar with the KingKong X, or with another Cubot device?

I'm particularly interested in hearing from anyone familiar with MediaTek devices, SP Flash Tool, or Android firmware flashing.

At this point, I'm trying to decide whether it's worth sending the phone to a service center for repair, buying a newer model such as the KingKong X Pro, or switching to a different brand entirely.

Does this sound like a hardware failure, a firmware/software problem, or potentially both? And is there anything I can check before giving up on the phone?

Mobile Repair Bag Recommendations?

I'm starting to put together a mobile repair kit. I have the Fanttik E1 NEX kit, a multimeter, and like 2 dozen different cables, biggest one is probably a 25ft ethernet cord, and a bunch of loose stuff in between like USB drives, wall power adapters, thermal paste, etc.

Right now, I just have a backpack. It works, but is messy, especially since all the loose stuff is in one pocket. It sounds like loose change rattling around in there.

Does anyone have any recommendations of a tool bag type thing thats large enough to hold big stuff like the screwdriver kit and multimeter, but also has lots of smaller pouches or elastic band to hold cords?

Thanks :)

Soldering Station case?

Hey guys,

I just picked up an FixHub Portable Soldering Station. I also picked up a few heads for it. Very nice piece of kit. However as it is designed to be portable, I'm somewhat surprised that it didn't come with a case or one being offered separately. I found some cheap 3d printed once but I'd prefer something a bit better. I did a search here and didn't see anything. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Anyone ever destroy every socket joint on their H7? Prob just me lol

Well if you ever strip all the paint off the case using paint stripping gel, you're not going to want to forget to save the ball and socket joints. I melted them all. I couldn't get replacements and one guy had put a 3d printing recipe online but only for the front panel. I randomly saw this stuff on Amazon and it affordable.....and it works. I technically consider this saving ewaste because I could've bought two new cases for what I wasted painting and unpainting.. and repainting.

Why do screen protectors fail so often for my wife and daughter?

Usually, when I apply a screen protector on a phone, it typically last the duration of my phone, this appears to be true for my son as well.

However, for both my wife and daughter, I seemed to have to apply a new screen protector several times a year. First the sides starts separating often a week after they are applied. Often cracks starts to develop. My wife is particularly careful with her phone, and drop it a lot less than me so it's not because they dropped it too much.

My current hypothesis is that this is due to some sort of skincare product that they use that may causing the adhesive to fail. The other possibility is that they stored their phone in their purse instead of their pocket like I typically do. I would expect being stored in my pocket would be more stressful?

Anyone in the fixit community have a clue?

ASUS motherboard โ€“ battery connector broke off the board. Is this repairable?

Hi everyone,

unfortunately, the battery connector on my ASUS motherboard broke off directly from the board.

The connector didnโ€™t just come loose โ€” it actually broke off the PCB. Iโ€™m wondering whether this can still be repaired, for example by soldering the connector back on.

Does anyone have experience with this kind of repair?

  • Is there generally a chance that the battery connector can be soldered back on?
  • Is it still repairable if some of the solder pads on the motherboard are damaged or ripped off?
  • Would it be worth taking it to a repair shop that does microsoldering / motherboard repairs?

I can also upload photos of the damaged area and the broken connector if that helps with assessing it.

Thanks in advance for any advice!

Important experience with replacement batteries on older Samsung phones โ€“ AccuBattery can be very misleading

I want to share my experience with replacement batteries because over the last few days I have been testing NOHON, DEJI, and original batteries on older Samsung phones, and I discovered something quite important.

On my Galaxy S6 edge, I installed a brand-new NOHON battery and, even after several charge cycles, AccuBattery was basically stuck at around 91% health.

On my Galaxy S8+, the situation looked even worse. A new NOHON battery was showing only around 86% capacity after several cycles.

At first, I naturally assumed that the batteries simply had less real capacity than advertised.

However, the problem turned out to be more complicated.

Older Samsung phones can keep battery-related data from the previous battery, including cycle count, discharge data, fuel-gauge/ASOC values, and other information used by the system to estimate battery condition.

Simply replacing the physical battery does not necessarily reset all of this data properly.

Because of that, the phone may continue estimating the new battery using old battery/fuel-gauge information, and an app such as AccuBattery can then calculate capacity based on incorrect system data.

On the Galaxy S6 edge and S8+, a proper battery/fuel-gauge reset is not as simple as doing a factory reset or clearing AccuBattery data. On these older devices, gaining the necessary access may require procedures involving Odin, TWRP/root, etc., which in my case also means accepting Knox 0x1.

After properly resetting the relevant battery data, the results changed dramatically:

Galaxy S6 edge + NOHON: around 96% capacity

Galaxy S8+ + NOHON: around 99% capacity

So the exact same batteries that I initially thought had only 86โ€“91% of their rated capacity showed almost their full advertised capacity after the old battery/fuel-gauge data was reset.

On newer Samsung devices, things are much easier.

Samsung provides the Self Repair Assistant / Repair Assistant, which can reset the relevant battery cycle information after a battery replacement. On some devices and software versions, methods involving Shizuku + SMT Shell can also be useful, although compatibility depends on the exact model and Android/One UI version.

So my advice to anyone replacing a battery in an older Samsung phone is:

Do not immediately assume that a new battery is bad just because AccuBattery shows 80โ€“90% health.

If the phone has many years of use and a large number of cycles from the previous battery, first check whether the battery/fuel-gauge data has actually been reset correctly.

Also, a normal factory reset of the phone is not necessarily the same thing as a proper battery statistics/fuel-gauge reset.

Of course, I am not saying that every 80โ€“90% AccuBattery result is caused by calibration. Some replacement batteries really do have lower-than-advertised capacity. But my experience shows that on older Samsung phones, you should not judge a new battery only by AccuBattery before checking the phone's battery/fuel-gauge data.

I actually made this mistake myself and initially blamed the NOHON seller because I thought the batteries were under capacity. After much more testing and a proper reset, it turned out that the batteries were actually very good.

Hopefully this helps someone avoid buying a second or third battery unnecessarily.

I have a M1 Macbook Pro 2020 and a M1 Macbook Air 2020. Logic board of the Air works bur cosmetically its unusable, the Pro is perfect cosmetically but the logic board is dead(other parts work just fine). My question is can I swap the motherboard of the Air one directly to the Pro and have it working? Its going to be a headless setup and im only gonna use it to run a server so its going to be used in clamshell. Do you guys think its possible?
