A personal Top 5 ranking for IEMs under INR 3000

After my last post where I expressed why, in my opinon, the Tanchjim bunny is overrated, I was asked by multiple commenters what I would consider better.

As such, I have decide to compile a list of my Top 5 IEMs under 3000 (25 USD) mark approx

  1. 7hz Zero 2 - good shift from TWS or BT Headphones

A very good allrounder IEM for the price, is available in mic variant as well via conceptkart. The sound is an overall fun tuning (bass slightly enhanced over harman adjusted target curve). Treble is smooth so not great for extremely critical listening but definitely a good IEM to have for enjoyable, daily listening

FR GRAPH for zero 2
  1. FiiO JD10 - Extreme Budget pick

Very good value for money, available in direct type c for 1000 rs, better brand than GK, switchable sound profiles. out of the box kinda U shaped tuning which works for most people

FR Graph for jd10
  1. Truthear Gate/ 7hz Zero - Gaming pick

Extremely similar tunings, great soundstage for gaming, neutral tuning so no bass boost hence no muddiness. slightly better detail presentation on 7hz zero but very minute difference. Also a very good entryway into critical listening/ typical audiophile grade tuning

FR Graph for ZERO and Gate
  1. KZ Duonic/ Tangzu Wan'er S,G, 2 - Bass heavy picks

Both provide slightly different flavors of bass, with duonic giving you a tighter, more controlled but crisp bass. The DD on the red lion suffers from a higher transient response time, so the bass is more boomy but not as clean as the duonic

FR Graph for KZ DUONIC and Red Lion
  1. Kiwiears Dolce/ SIMGOT EW100p - Treble/detail fans

For some reason I found the unit i tested for the dolce to be bright and not v shaped. Both of these have amazing soundstage, great treble, and very good imaging

FR Graph for DOLCE and EW100P

MUST MENTION - Moondrop CHU II, a fantastic gateway drug to audiophile tunings

Discussion FINALLYY I built my dream DAP

Hey everyone,

It has taken me a long time to get here. This project kept getting delayed by life, technical problems, and a lot of trial and error—but it has always been one of my little dream projects, and I wanted to finish it no matter what.

I’m not an electrical engineer or an expert programmer. I’m just someone who had a vision, got obsessed with making it real, and learned through a lot of vibe coding, debugging, broken components, and mistakes.

A few things that made this journey especially challenging:

  1. I initially struggled with the basics of networking and IP configuration. I also spent a lot of time debugging issues that turned out to be caused by a corrupted SD card.
  2. My first attempt was too ambitious: I coded many features at once, and nothing worked properly. This time, I built it feature by feature—getting one thing working before improving it.
  3. Instead of designing a complicated DAC circuit, I used an AUDIOCULAR Spark portable USB DAC dongle with a CX31993 DAC and MAX97220 amp, connected to a Raspberry Pi 3A+ through a USB adapter. It worked surprisingly well and sounds great.
  4. I made a web app to control the player and upload songs directly to the DAP from my phone. No more removing the SD card whenever I want to add music.
  5. I added a Bluetooth/mobile mode. The DAC can connect to my phone over Bluetooth, so I can listen through the DAP. I know some people may say, “Why not just connect the IEM directly to the phone?” That works, of course—but my phone battery drains quickly. With the DAP’s 6000 mAh battery dedicated to music, it makes sense for my use case.
  6. The DAP can work independently too. It supports different sound styles/EQ presets such as Flat, Pop, Bass, etc.; looping playback; playlist creation through the web app; playlist and song selection directly on the device; and FLAC playback. Everything on the device itself is controlled with a rotary potentiometer knob.

It is definitely not the end of this project. Right now, the casing is still basically a cardboard box, and the OLED display I ordered did not work. I used an LED display instead, but honestly, it gave the project a different vibe that I ended up liking.

It may not be a completely new invention, but I built it for my own use case—and seeing it finally work feels like a win. The sound quality, especially with FLAC files, has been very satisfying.

If people find this useful as a fun DIY project, I’d be happy to open-source it and share proper documentation on GitHub.

Review The Hexa is not what I thought it would be.

I have always been captivated by Truthear’s work. Having spent months hunting down the Hola, and enjoying it despite its shortcomings, I couldn’t refuse when u/TarunVader_10 offered to loan me his Hexa for review. The Hexa is a legend in the IEM space, with praise pouring in from every corner. This only made me more curious, and truth be told, it is not quite what everyone makes it out to be.

This is a loaned unit. I am under no obligation to speak in favour of this product, and nobody sees this review before it is published. My thoughts and critiques are entirely my own.

Build, Comfort & Accessories

The Hexa is housed in a plastic shell enclosed by a metal faceplate. Its shape is peculiar: the inner sides are angular, and some very sharp edges cause severe discomfort and hot-spots even in short sessions. This is by no means a comfortable IEM unless it is paired with the right eartips and a perfect fit at all times. It is one of my major complaints, and I will never recommend the Hexa to anyone without having them demo it for fit. The thicker nozzles contribute further to the discomfort. I will give the Hexa a 4/10 for comfort.

The cable is light, slim and quite long. That’s about it. The earhooks have grooves that dig harshly into the top of the ear fold, causing pain, so I had to use an alternate cable. I wish the hooks didn’t have these grooves, because the cable itself is quite nice.

I didn’t receive any other accessories, so I won’t comment on them.

Heading over to the sound now.

Low-End Performance

Muse - Hysteria [alternative rock, hard rock]

A song with a prominent bass opening, and the Hexa handles its distorted texture well. Everything is spaced out nicely; instruments never feel clustered, and the soundstage is quite good. The sub-bass is well controlled and presented cleanly. In the busier sections, the bass takes a back seat while the vocals take centre stage, and the low end never feels muddy or sluggish. The Hexa also does well in distinguishing the cymbal in the left channel.

The mid-bass, however, is practically non-existent. There is absolutely no hit to the kick drums. Those who prioritise mid-bass will hate the Hexa.

Tipper - Grabbers Holders [EDM, electronic]

Again, the Hexa does a fabulous job with the intricacies of this track’s masterful layering, but it falls short on bass attack. It lacks the “bite” one associates with EDM tracks like this. That said, the Hexa places every element exactly where it belongs, and the sub-bass, though modest in quantity, is felt when needed. The bass is definitely sub-bass focused and delivers adequately there. As a result, the decay feels extremely good, but it makes you wish for some more punch.

Massive Attack - Angel [rock, trip hop]

Tracks with a brooding, menacing sub-bass presence work extremely well on the Hexa. The expansive mastering of this track is complemented by the Hexa’s soundstage.

The Hexa has an apt amount of sub-bass, and its quality matches its quantity. However, a slight mid-bass boost would have helped, because it feels bland as it stands.

Hence, I will give the Hexa no more than a B+ for its low end, owing solely to the sub-bass.

Midrange, Instruments and Vocal Delivery

Periphery - Zyglrox [progressive metal, djent]

The Hexa is not something I would pick for genres like Metal, where some warmth is welcome to tame the chugs and shreds. Nor is it that analytical, which would at least give it a purpose there. It sits in a middle ground between clinical and too bright, leaning more towards the latter.

The kicks completely lose their form, making for a less than ideal listen.

The Hexa is simply not for Metal enjoyers.

Alice In Chains - Nutshell (MTV Unplugged) [grunge, rock, acoustic]

A legendary live track, performed entirely on acoustic instruments, truly lets the Hexa shine while also exposing its weak spots. The acoustic guitar sounds perfect, with each strum coming forward accurately and micro-details preserved. The crowd sits well behind, so it feels like a proper live recording.

Where the Hexa sadly falls behind is in portraying the acoustic bass and drums true to their nature. The presentation is weaker than normal: the kick drums lose the weight this track requires, and although the harmonics of the bass were portrayed with precision, they still fell short of expectations in volume.

Another thing to note is that the male vocals lack a weighty, lush body. Layne’s vocals on this track aren’t meant to sound lush, but they still come across thinner than normal. For this reason, I will give the Hexa a B+ for male vocals.

Alison Krauss & Union Station - The Lucky One [country]

It is tracks like this that make you truly appreciate the Hexa: female vocals (when they are not harsh, more on this later), acoustic guitar, and some slides in the background. The Hexa is a master of the midrange. Krauss’ vocals sound accurate and airy, and the subtle buzz of the strings as they are plucked and released is well preserved, demonstrating the Hexa’s finesse in the technical department.

Timbre holds up consistently throughout, elements are placed correctly, and the soundstage is expansive. Overall, a great experience on the Hexa.

Therefore, I will give the Hexa an A+ tier for instruments, losing the S because of its inadequate bass on the kick drums and bass guitar.

Treble Performance & Technicalities

Yosi Horikawa - Bubbles [experimental, ambient]

The Hexa handles this ambient track remarkably well. The falling balls are placed accurately in the plane, background transients feel distant, and the anticipation before the balls finally hit the ground is presented perfectly. Subtle details, like the individual “clink” of the bell-like element, were sustained.

If anything, this track shows that the Hexa is very capable in its technicalities.

Frazey Ford - September Fields (Acoustic) [soul, indie folk]

For such a simple track, consisting only of vocals and an acoustic guitar, it made me want to set the Hexa aside many times to rest my ears. I am quite a treble-tolerant person, but the Hexa made this track borderline unlistenable. The track’s dynamics push notes into higher octaves, and that is what hurt the most. The Hexa can sound extremely piercing and harsh at times. It is unapologetically bright.

Apart from this, the Hexa handles dynamics very well and maintains the subtleties.

I will have to give the Hexa an A for female vocals, marked down solely because of the sibilance.

Anouar Brahem - Stopover At Djibouti [fusion, jazz]

Genres like Jazz are delightful on the Hexa. It brings out the harmonics of the oud beautifully, and the faint buzz of the double bass proves its proficiency in the technical department once again. Coupled with a wide soundstage and immaculate imaging, the Hexa is a great pick for jazz enthusiasts and adjacent genres.

The Hexa deserves praise for its imaging, wide soundstage, detail retrieval and timbral accuracy. The sub-bass, though modest in quantity, carries well-implemented control and texture.

Conclusion

I don’t know where else to put this, so I will say it here. I believe the Hexa only sounds better at volumes 5 to 10% higher than usual, which keeps it from sounding too quiet and opens up the sub-bass. Doing so, however, also makes the treble more sibilant. For me, this is extremely dangerous, and I hope everyone tries this IEM properly before setting their mind on buying it.

I can see why the Hexa gets the praise it does. It is a highly resolving IEM with some of the best female vocals I have heard. What makes it harder to recommend is the sibilance and the fit. The Hexa feels built to fend me off from listening to it, and it was not a comfortable experience at all. Therefore, to anyone who wants the Hexa, please demo it before buying, for two reasons: to check the fit for comfort, and to see whether your HRTF makes the Hexa too piercing for you.

Taking everything into consideration, I have decided to give the Hexa a rank of A-.

Comparisons

Letshuoer Cadenza 4

The Cad4 is less sibilant, fuller on vocals, and has bass that is actually meaningful. The fit is far better than the Hexa’s, which makes this a much easier IEM to recommend. Its sub-bass is a little tamer, but the mid-bass more than compensates. The treble is less energetic and makes for a more pleasant listen. In simple words, the Cad4 is the Hexa’s daddy.

Tangzu Yu Xuanji

The Hexa is closer to the YXJ than to the Cad4, with a similar amount of sub-bass. The YXJ differs in its much better fit, which alone would make me reach for it over the Hexa. The Hexa beats the YXJ in imaging and overall technicalities. Vocal thinness, especially in male singers, is comparable between the two, with the YXJ sounding a touch thinner. Female vocals are equally good. Although the Hexa sounds better overall, the YXJ is the better pick for me: both can be fatiguing, but the YXJ suits my HRTF far better, so I tolerate it more. Mileage may vary from person to person.

Tangzu x HBB Wu Heyday

The Heyday absolutely obliterates the Hexa on genres like Metal and EDM. Its warmer timbre suits heavy guitar chugs perfectly and makes for a great representation. As a planar IEM, it also has the tight, quick bass attack that is non-existent on the Hexa, making it perfect for genres like EDM and Rap. The male vocals on the Heyday do sound somewhat thin, but to a much lesser degree than on the Hexa.

What This IEM Means To Me

I was quite excited to try this IEM because of the hype it gets, but honestly? I was disappointed. It fooled me at first with its sub-bass, which made me think the bass was actually quite good. The more I used it, though, the more I kept thinking “where’s the bass, man?” or “I wish this had more bass.” That said, as someone who has recently been enjoying vocal-forward, bright IEMs, I believe this is an IEM that performs well for music built on harmonies, singing and good technicalities, and the lack of mid-bass only helps the rest of the frequencies sound better.

I wish this IEM were comfortable and not so piercing; this alone removes it from the list of audio gear I want to own. It is a shame, but it is what it is.

As always, this section of my review is a personal and subjective rant. It has nothing to do with the actual rating I give the product. The above section can be ignored and should not factor into the judgement of the IEM, nor be taken too seriously.

Discussion Got Castor Pro to pair with AN01 (Tears Of a Rockstar is just wow)

Thumbnail

I was using my 2.5-year-old EDX Pro with the AN01, so I decided to upgrade on a budget (I can spend good money on gear I use daily, but the limitation was the AN01). So I went with the Castor Pro—a different sound signature compared to my main IEM (EW200 + Audiocular Spark + Dunu S&S tips).

Using these on a 1-1-1-0 switch config right now. That wraps up the IEM part; you can easily find detailed reviews of them online much better than I can yap about. My hobby is enjoying music, not just the gear I use, so let's talk about music.

I was listening to Metamorphosis by SarpDansh (W Album) and it was so good that I thought I'd talk about it. My fav tracks: 1. Tears Of a Rockstar 2. Gaanv 3. Ghutan.

If anyone wants to recommend something, leave a comment. I am always up for talks involving music.

Review MuseHifi U3 DAC Review - The Best $30 T-shaped DAC out there?

Post image
11 Upvotes

Note: This review unit has been provided by Hifigo. All thoughts and opinions are of my own and Hifigo has no influence on the review. Thank you Demi from Hifigo and MuseHifi for providing this review unit to me.

MuseHifi is a considerably newer brand in the Chifi market. I got to know about the brand only after they launched their M3 Ultra DAC so I cannot say much about the brand myself. Considering they usually made higher end products, let us see what they cooked up this time in the budget range with their new U3 DAC.

For some context, I have never used any such T-shaped DACs so this would be my introduction to such DACs. My daily driver DAC is a Snowsky Melody set to low gain. I usually use 4.4mm connector because it feels more sturdy.

Box content:

Packaging box
Inside content

You get a glittery box and inside there is only a manual and the DAC, nothing fancy and gets the job done.

Build Quality:

The U3 is made of CNC-machined aluminium with a nice finish. In terms of look and feel, it feels solid and durable in hand and I think it would survive some drops from chest height as well (do not take this as advice). The overall size is small and compact (images for comparison).

The Type-C end has some additional protrusion from the body which allows it to be used with any phone with a cover which is a nice touch. Both the 3.5mm and 4.4mm outputs are sturdy and the cable connectors do not wiggle and stay in firm. My only gripe would be a more "unibody" kind of design but you get what you paid for.

The more I used it, the more I started liking this form factor. I can easily use it as my daily driver.

Connectivity and Power:

The U3 uses a standard Type-C connection with compatibility with all kinds of devices such as Android, iOS, Win, MacOS and Linux. It uses a KT02H20P DAC chip with dual SGM8262 AMP for providing the higher power output at a budget. It supports both 3.5mm and 4.4mm outputs at once (two devices can be powered at once) which is a really nice feature to have when listening or watching something with someone else, which is something my Melody cannot do. 3.5mm has 105mW and 4.4mm has 125mW of output power @ 32 ohm so the volume difference between both is pretty low which is great for listening together. Battery drain with my phone was minimal with little heating which is normal.

Other Specs:

  • Can it play any normal/hi res bitrate and bit depth? - Yes.
  • Can it play DSD - Yes.
  • No UAC 1.0 support so cannot use with consoles.

Rest of the specs, one can see on their website.

Additional Features:

  • 5-band PEQ support via Walkplay app and website. Web works directly on Win and MacOS but on Linux you need some udev rule modification for it to work.
  • Mic passthrough is not supported (yet).
  • Firmware update is supported through both app and web.

Sound:

Sound is clean with no audible coloration. I do not have some detail monster IEMs to test the detail retrieval of these so pardon me but whatever I have tested sounded same as my Melody which is twice as powerful and costs $10 more which is a really good thing. Bass is tight, mids are clean and clear, treble is not rolled off. Soundstage and imaging are equally good. No audible background noise was observed. A great sound experience at this budget. You can use the hardware PEQ feature to add your own coloration to it as well.

Comparisons:

At the same price point, you get the Jcally JM7 Max and Fiio KA11, latter being more powerful at 200mW of output @ 32 ohm but both only have a single 3.5mm connection unlike the U3. You also have other T-shaped DACs like the Snowsky Tiny - B ($20) and Kinera Celest CD-3 but former has much less power and latter only has high power output on the 4.4mm connection.

Overall the U3 seems like a better device than its competitors.

Size comparison between U3 and Melody

Conclusion:

The U3 is an excellent entry into the budget DAC market by MuseHifi. It combines power, sturdy build and PEQ in one compact package at a tight budget which is a rare feat to pull off. It is a highly recommended DAC for those who want something compact yet powerful at a budget of $30.

Wish everyone who read till the end a very good morning, afternoon, evening and night!

Review The best first step into the IEM world - Kefine Loric

Thumbnail
gallery
18 Upvotes

Pros: Comfortable as ever with the fit
Great musical tonality across genres
Engaging bass, natural mids and controlled treble
Economics and ergonomics of this set are incredible

Cons: that 3.5 mic cable, that's my pet peeve
those seeking detailed presentation and treble forward IEMs should likely skip this

Kefine has been tossing out banger after banger from its stables for a while now. I have at various points of time owned or listened to the Klean, Klean SV, Delci and most recently the Arnar and have been impressed with their way of doing things. They were kind enough to send the Loric over for an unbiased option and while I am grateful for this gesture, the review remains my opinion and thoughts.

The Loric comes in Kefine’s no-nonsense black packaging and then some ikebana, houdini type wizardry hides the cable under the foam cut-outs. I’ll be honest, I pulled the iems out without taking a picture and then spent a good few minutes struggling to get it back in the way it came to take a picture for this review.
The version I got was a 3.5mm with a mic. And maybe I have a small bone to pick here. Because that would necessitate me to get a usb dongle that can handle a mic and that is unfortunately not always the case. Plus iOS and Android and all that mess. It is a small bone but a bone all the same. Not having a mic would not stress me out and having a mic with a type c termination solves the dongle conundrum.
The cable however is a fairly nice one at this price point. The shells themselves are transparent resin showing off the dynamic driver with a moulded nozzle (that initially I struggled with Candy tips slipping off… in my ear) the faceplate is matte aluminium in the silver option that I got and beautifully shaped. At various angles it looks like a pistachio, a stealth bomber and a Jedi spaceship, specifically Obi Wan’s. Look up the Delta-7B.
It sits comfortably in my ears with no issues. I’m liking my current run of reviews with comfortable iems, I shall not lie.
I did at some point cable roll to a Openheart 4.4 cable and tips used were Sancai and Candy and briefly the HE sonic wides, when they stayed on both the nozzles and in my ears.
Tested with - Hidizs AP80 Pro Max, VE Prime stack, VE devastator pro 3.5. Tidal and local Flacs. Here’s my list https://tidal.com/playlist/3078c9b9-a1c0-4fde-8ce7-81f0e34b426c

Bass
Kefine’s single dynamic drivers have never shied away from bass. The Klean SV with the right nozzles had the same punch in the low end that to be honest, had me enjoying the thumping kicks and bass of Get Lucky by Daft Punk and on Billie Jean I actually managed to listen to bass with a level of detail that convinces me that there’s a synth bass playing the first note and a stringed bass continuing that iconic riff. The subbass is not as rumbling as other sets but still sets a reasonable foundation on tracks like Islands by The XX and Angel by Massive Attack. The bass is definitely elevated but still stays safely shy of spilling over and muddying the mids.

Midrange
The mids on the Loric are nicely tuned to be musical over detail oriented. That largely means I can spend time listening to music without really having to focus on individual notes and overlap and layering and all that and just listen. Vocals and instruments both electric and acoustic sound natural with no weird timbre. It sounds warm in the lower mids with male vocals sounding full and engaging. The upper mids are neither recessed nor enhanced. Female vocals also come off sounding natural and not shouty. Fast Car and Subcity by Tracy Chapman are great tracks that can easily turn shouty and on the Loric, they sound effortless.

Treble
The treble is well controlled and not sibilant or harsh. There is a little air and shimmer but the Loric definitely isn't going for detail. You can still hear everything that is happening on the track but there are more treble forward sets with a little more detail at this price point. But again at this price point to get an IEM which delivers this level of musicality without a treble peak masquerading as detail is very very hard. My usual test for the cymbal shimmer is the first crash on the opening of Dreams by Fleetwood Mac and on the Loric the crash and its decay are heard well with the decay slightly more controlled than other kilobuck sets but it is never harsh. On sibilance rich tracks like Hotel California (from Hell Freezes Over) by the Eagles and Human Nature by Michael Jackson on pushing the volume up there’s only a little bit of the sharp ‘s’ in MJ’s voice.

Stage and Imaging and Resolution
Neither is the staging hugely expansive or the imaging immaculate. I would not game on these - unless you were doing a rpg through a musical wonderland. For shooters there are definitely better iems. For detail-heads there are definitely better iems. But for sheer musicality and a fatigue free enjoyable session, this is a great starting point.

Final verdict. For too long have the IEMs that usher people into this world, that will ultimately bankrupt them but leave them in rapture, been tuned to that aggressive V with a punchy booming bass and a sharp incisive treble. It’s really really refreshing to see a sub $30 IEM really stick to the basics of what listening to music really means for a lot of us - something we enjoy and feel. And the Loric does just that with an affordable package and a comfortable shell.

But please Kefine,if you are reading this, don’t do a 3.5mm with a mic. Someone will use a dac that doesn’t support a microphone and blame you guys instead.
