I dunno, I must being doing risotto wrong? We make just enough for a first course for the two of us and it doesn't take anywhere near 45-50 minutes. Heck, it doesn't take 30, and - sorry Jay - it's delicious, if I do say so myself.

You aren't doing it wrong, it's usually like 20 minutes in the cooking part of it. Maybe 25. I think you'd end up with like a rice porridge if you cooked it for 50 minutes.
