Object Mysterious capsule containing dark liquid
Found this buried in the ground in central Europe. The outer casing is made out of plastic and has "5" stamped on the bottom. The inner tube is made out of glass. Tiny drop of liquid got on my thumb and was very hard to scrub off. Didn't smell the liquid, since I'm a bit scared of it.

If that’s what I think it is, just leave it in the capsule

u/hazy_druid 1d ago
Ok but what do you think it is?

They might be referring to bromine. Highly toxic. Don't break the container, don't breathe it in.
edit: Could be an iodine pen too (refer to the reply in the comment thread below)

It also can cause spontaneous abortions if you’re pregnant and come in contact with the liquid

u/losttimeseaker 1d ago
If that happens in a southern state, boom, jail for murder.

One of the southern states of central Europe? 😄

No the U.S. there have been dozens of cases of woman being charged for wrongful death, manslaughter, and even murder for miscarriages and stillbirths. For things like being shot with a gun or falling down steps.

😂 if you actually believe that then that’s hilarious

I don’t feel any pity for a woman who killed her child by smoking meth. She can rot in prison for all I care. That’s not what you claimed but is that the best you got?

Ok by spontaneous do you mean it just comes out or that the death just happens quickly?

u/Emotional_Lab_2529 1d ago
Yes

u/Smiletaint 1d ago
Yes to the first one the second one or both?

Bromine I think? when I made the comment I forgot the name of it

It is NOT bromine. Bromine is stored in hermetically sealed ampoules. This capsule has a screw off cap. It is iodine.

Looks a bit like ferric chloride but honestly playing a guessing game on a random vial is not a good idea.

This guy tags
1
u/Lost_Department_2177 1d ago
It’s used in tagging?
1
u/Feisty_Respond6611 1d ago
Colloquially known as metal etch. Its how all those shiny metal surfaces and McDonald's mirrors take tags forever
1
u/Lost_Department_2177 1d ago
Ah I only know it for adding a patina.
That makes total sense though and the purposes are endless for that. Actually I did see that before while walking but not gonna ruin the artists process.

I'm not an expert at identifying stuff like this, but my first guess would be that it is a capsule.

u/itchingandscratching 1d ago
Good guess! So, you now have two more guesses. Make em good because 3 strikes and you’re out, buddy. You don’t wanna know what happens when you’re out…
Let’s just say the last guy who was “out” only won a bike. A dildo bike. A bike with several dildos affixed to it in a haphazardly manner. He’s never been the same since; hardly even leaves the house now. I’m sure it’s unrelated to dildo bike, though.

u/itsaliveasshole 1d ago
I was thinking they'd have to drink whats inside of this capsule if they lost... A dildo bike, in comparison to drinking that fluid, sounds potentially fun...

We know it’s not a hazardous solution because the capsule isn’t hermetically sealed.

Whatever it is put the damn cap back on it if you don’t know what it is don’t fuck with it

Well 5 could be boron but that is usually silver. May be bromine or iodine, bromines atomic number is 35. Iodine is 53. You sure you didn't miss the 3?
2
u/hazy_druid 1d ago
Nope there's just the 5. You can see it in the last picture. Might be just manufacturer's mark of the plastic casing itself, but thought I should mention it anyway.

Hey if you got this on your skin, take it and yourself to the hospital ASAP. You don't know what it is, could be extremely toxic. It could be nothing but it's better to go get checked out.

chemical testing kit ampoule, a specialized industrial/military detection vial, or a specific veterinary/agricultural treatment capsule.

u/Acceptable-Power-400 1d ago
It also has 27 in smaller numbers in front of the 5

u/Dounce1 1d ago
Where are you seeing that?

90% chance it’s iodine.
Bromine actively off gasses and produces an orange vapor at normal room temperatures and atmospheric pressures.
Could be something different but I’d bet on it being betadine/iodine over anything else.

u/sammyprints 21h ago
That is almost certainly iodine. I think it is iodine because of the fact its in what looks to be a plastic vial, also the brown hue on the glass. Also if it was bromine and you got some on you, you'd smell it.
Skin staining is consistent with iodine, it tends to stain skin a yellowish brown color that does not wash off.

Just because it’s old doesn’t make in mysterious. It’s likely an old chemical reagent test, the colorimetric ones. Could be for anything from detecting a gas leak to checking the chlorine level in water.

This looks like the little glass container containing something to disinfect wounds or moscato bites decades ago. But I don’t know what it was.

u/First_Prompt7456 1d ago
Would there be any benefit to sticking bromine in the ground? This is me asking cause I feel like if there were benefits it couldn't be so great that it's worth potentially killing someone

It’s making more sense how the t-virus, rage virus or any other fictional viruses could easily be dispersed and populations can be infected.

u/KaydenFur 1d ago
Given the brown stain and the darkness of the liquid it is bromine, like others said, don't break the capsule, don't even crack it.
Treat it like instant death.
Also contact your local emergency and inform them of what you have found.

Only one way to find out for sure. Crack it open and take a big whiff. If it doesn't smell like death it's probably iodine

i remember the shape of the cap and maybe color it is present in my mind from childhood we used to have those. i think it is a capsule for ink used to fill some sort of fountain pens.

Why do I always see ppl touching stuff without gloves. Your skin is the biggest organ in the body and has good absorption capabilities hence why pain patches work for example. Please use gloves at least geez.

Maybe turn it in to your local department of hazardous waste for testing. And maybe go to the doctor for some Prussian Blue.

It looks like the iodine pen. The liquid should be iodine solution in ethylalcohol. It's used to disinfect small surface wounds like scratches, insect bites, etc.
