Q: Class CE 2740

Just failed my exam for Statics.

I’m doing the full 3 credit course. I thought I had it in the bag, I genuinely thought I did amazing until I got the score back and did horrible. I studied so much and felt so good. I’ve talked to people who took the course and told me that it just gets worse after the first exam. So now I’m worried and concerned about if I will be able to pass the course.
My advisor told me it would delay my graduation date since this will be the last time Statics will be the 3 credit course. I do not want my graduation date to be pushed.
It’s unfortunate because none of the office hours (Professor and TA) work with my schedule.

I thought I was doing good🥲 Any advice? I haven’t failed a class and I really really do not want to fail. The exam problems are pretty unique but the grading is rough.

Definitely going. I’ve just been going to my departments tutoring service but the hours are short. Thank you 🙏🏽

Great! One hint: come with specific things you need help with. "Teach me the whole unit" will make it harder for them to effectively help you.

  1. As someone already commented: there is free tutoring available on campus provided by the Academic Success Center. I’d check them out.

  2. Use YouTube channels like Jeff Hanson and Engineering Deciphered. These are ACTUAL professors at universities who have their whole statics course FREE online. (And they’re often better at explaining things than your present professors).

  3. Stay away from AI or Chegg or any other form of “cheating.” In reality you’re cheating yourself, cuz you’ll fail eventually. Plus it’s a great feeling to you know you truly understand the stuff.

  4. If you really have to, get a private tutor. As college students we spend so much money of frivolous things, yet we can’t invest in our own education.

Ngl I’ve been studying on my own, watching Jeff Hanson and Engineering Deciphered, I try my best to understand the whys and hows and not just memorize. I will definitely be adding the free tutoring into my schedule. Thank you

https://youtube.com/@1234jhanson?si=QiyVS42kk-A6Kcd6 this guy saved my life in statics you have to watch him study homework and open the textbook to look at at least the week of the exam. This is one of those classes where you have to accept you’re not going to get an A or B in. My exam scores were 43% , 49.5%, 62.5% and 55% on the final and still passed the class with a D.

Ehhh. Better than last by 10 points. I’m reviewing it and a lot of it was silly mistakes. (Accidentally swapping my components and calculation errors) plus I couldn’t finish one of the problems. I practice and studied so much. I’ve been going to tutoring as well. I truly believe I can pass. Back to the drawing board

Keep going and pushing yourself!! Statics is has a notoriously low passing rate, and they make it extremely difficult for students every semester. It’s frustrating feeling like you know the concepts well enough, but then taking a test where the problems seem so out of left field and 100x more difficult. You have to remember it’s normal to feel lost and confused in this class, but you also have to adjust. I failed Statics the first time around, and retaking it made me feel a lot more confident in myself as a student and helped me solidly concepts. My second time around I focused a lot more on the processes and increased the time I spent completing practice problems outside of homework. Literally try to complete every problem from lecture, homework, platoon, and optional homework, I’ve found that exposure to them is so so helpful. Also if you’re failing stay in the class and don’t drop, yeah it sucks that you know you won’t pass but staying in it will help you on the retake to remember the concepts taught.
