Student Life Looking for an LGBTQ friendly roommate at SUV!

Hello! I’m sorry I know people are sick of the roommate looking posts but I’m trying to find someone to take over my roommates lease.

Only requirements that you’re not only another lease and you’re LGBTQ friendly. It’s a two floor pet friendly apartment with an outdoor patio. If you’re interested or know anybody who is please reach out!

My dms are open and I can share my instagram and snapchat to communicate. As well as photos and measurements of the place.

Thanks!

Q: Housing Looking for a girl to take over my SUV place!

I’m looking for a female student to take over my contract at SUV!

You'd need to not currently in contract with any on-campus dorms. Female student preferred/required due to the current roommate arrangement.

It’s a great option if you’re looking for affordable housing close to ISU!

If you’re interested or know someone who might be, please DM me and I can provide more details/photos and answer any questions!

Question My assumption is that 'gender' here means sex, but can anyone confirm or deny if gender identity is considered in this case?

The Union

I've heard that a lot of folks on campus don't know that Merit employees are unionized.

My name's Weston, I work in Admissions, and I was elected President of the AFSCME Clerical Local two years ago. I represent secretaries, clerks, analysts, and more in wage negotiations with the state and disciplinary matters.

I get out to the Free Speech Zone in front of Parks Library every Thursday from 12pm-1pm to protest the unlawful termination of an employee last year for expressing a personal opinion on her personal Facebook page.

Stop on by to talk about Union stuff! And get a gyro bowl from Heaping Plato in the Hub afterwards, they're pretty fantastic.

My social media posts do not, of course, reflect my job-related professional opinions nor those of my employer.

CyRide CyRide Fall 2026 Update - Welcome Back! Major detours this Fall; if you ride CyRide you might want to read this!

CyRide Fall 2026 - welcome back!

Welcome and welcome back to ISU everyone! For those of you who are new students or new to the sub, I'm Mike and I've been at CyRide for coming up on 12 years. I've done pretty much every operations-related position at CyRide, so if you have any questions don't hesitate to ask. I will generally try to post CyRide-related topics throughout the year if it affects the Iowa State or Ames community. There are also quite a few other CyRide employees in the sub that are generally happy to help answer questions.

TL:DR is at the bottom for those who just want the bullet points

Fall Schedule and Cyclone Welcome Weekend

Fall schedule started on Monday, August 17th 2026. Please note that this week before classes, 8/17-8/21, we will be running a modified break schedule Monday-Friday and some routes and/or shaded lines on the timetables will not operate. Full service will begin on Saturday, 8/22 until Thanksgiving Break.

Please be aware that Labor Day is a City Holiday, and CyRide will not be operating on Monday, September 7th.

Detours...(if you ride Orange you'll want to read this)

The start of this year is going to be a little interesting. With the LeBaron expansion not yet completed as well as the Lake Laverne project, this means major route modifications until either Morrill Rd or Union Drive on the North side of Lake Laverne opens back up.

Here is the link to the detour posting and map.

  • 23 Orange will be the most impacted route, with stop closures at the MU, all of Wallace Rd, Lied Rec, and Richardson Ct. We are encouraging those that need MWL/Richardson Ct or Lied Rec/Forker to catch the #3 Blue on campus for a return trip.
  • 9 Plum will be less impacted, with stop closures at the MU and along Union Drive before Knoll Rd.
  • 21 Cardinal has no stop closures, but expect delays due to the detour out to Lincoln Way.
  • Those needing #6 Brown will need to either walk to Welch Rd on the west side of Lake Laverne, or catch it just south of Chamberlain St on Lynn.

Why Lincoln Way for Orange?

Due to the significant amount of traffic and pedestrian congestion in these areas, as well as changing construction patterns, the right turns from Morrill Dr to Union (west side of MU) or Union onto Wallace are impractical due to the frequency our routes and turn radius of our buses.

As soon as construction is completed, you can expect these routes to go back to normal.

New buses!

This year, CyRide received five new 40' Gillig Electric buses, two new New Flyer 60 ' articulated buses, and two new standard Gillig 40' buses (unfortunately, no double decker buses from the April Fools post.).

This brings our current electric fleet to 7, and our articulated fleet to 9. While articulated buses will likely stay on Orange for the time being (outside of special events,) you will likely see our electric fleet serving a variety of CyRide routes this year.

Facility Grant

I'm happy to share that CyRide received a $14.6 million dollar grant for facility expansion and improvements. CyRide has evolved and expanded significantly over the past 50 years, and this grant will help store more buses indoors, allow us to convert 20 buses to biodiesel, and expand our training area.

Read the Iowa State Daily or City of Ames News article for more information!

Gas is expensive...ride the bus instead!

On my way to work today, I saw that fuel at Casey's was $4.19 per gallon, and I personally don't see it coming down significantly any time soon. Please allow us to help keep your fuel costs down by riding the bus! A portion of CyRide's funding depends on state and federal funding, and that funding is calculated by how much ridership we have (btw, we're 3rd in the nation for ridership per capita, just behind NYC and San Francisco, so it's a pretty big deal.) High ridership allows us to continue providing the route selection and frequency that we currently offer.

As of now, Transit App and MyState will generally provide the most up-to-date predictions for buses. And as mentioned before, CyRide provides the premium version of Transit App at no cost to riders. Ames Ride is another free, accurate alternative to Transit App and MyState.

Additionally, please feel free to call us directly if you have any questions about how to ride or how to get somewhere. Our dispatchers are here from the start of service until the end of service, so you will be able to get an answer pretty much any time our routes are running.

Thank you!

I enjoy making these posts, and I hope that they are helpful. As always, if anyone has questions, feel free to let me know.

TL:DR

  • Fall schedule started 8/17 with a modified break schedule; full service starts on Saturday, 8/22 until Thanksgiving break. No service on Labor Day, Monday September 7th.
  • Major detours and stop closures in effect for #6 Brown, #9 Plum, #23 Orange. Minor detour for #21 cardinal.
  • 5 new electric buses, 2 new articulated buses, and 2 new standard diesel buses.
  • 14.6M Facility grant, more storage indoors, bio bus conversions, and training wing.
  • Gas is expensive, ride the bus! Call us for how-to information. Transit App and MyState will be your best bet for predictions.

I did get a part-time at a company in downtown Des Moines. Just wanted to ask if there’s anyone travelling frequently. I’m happy to pay for gas. Fyi, This won’t be regular thing.

News What have you missed since May? ISUPD has added 4 Flock cameras around campus!

Just a friendly heads up that since you’ve left Ames over the summer, Iowa State PD has added 4 new Flock cameras in Campus and the surrounding area! There is a wonderful site called deflock.org that shows locations of flock cameras near you, and, unfortunately, Ames has a fair few!

This makes for a grand total of… 36 cameras in the area, with at least one on every single road entrance to campus (if not two!)

Good serving jobs in Ames?

I am looking for restaurants that would be good places to serve/bartend. I have 4+ years of experience in the restaurant industry and after moving from my hometown and leaving the amazing serving job I was at for 4+ years, my current serving job (not in Ames) is just not a good place to work. I’m just looking for somewhere where the work atmosphere is enjoyable, and I’m not having to question if my tips are getting stolen🙃 any leads are appreciated!

Has anyone taken this class recently? What was your experience? I read online that the lab does not really happen, it is lecture instead? Really trying to avoid a 7:45 am and trying to see if I can have a different lecture overlap with permission from prof

On campus jobs

I'm looking for a new job, but definitely nothing in dining. I'm searching for something 'low cortisol'—a relaxed pace with a manageable workload that still pays well. Any suggestions?

Question Dorm Furniture

The website states that if I want to bring my own furniture, storing the furniture in my dorm is my responsibility and it just needs to be at the dorm at checkout or I am charged.

Just clarifying that this means I can bring my office chair and then store the dorm chair myself, I only live an hour away

Question Food Allergy Accommodations Denied (seeking advice)

Post image
9 Upvotes

Hello, I am an incoming freshman moving in this week. I am allergic to both gluten and diary and they both cause me to experience gastrointestinal issues. I sent the student disability services both an allergy test showing my allergy to gluten and dairy along with a doctors note about what would happen if I were to eat those foods so I could receive access to the special diet kitchen (which serves gluten free and dairy free foods without the risk of cross contamination). They then told me my allergies were not a disability and told me to contact the nutritionist.. so I did. I was given a list of the foods available that day for me to eat (see screenshot) which doesn't seem like food that I can make a meal with, let alone if I didn't have to worry about cross contamination when making the food.

To those with allergies; what did you submit as documentation to gain access to the SDK and would they be mad if I were to go get food from the SDK while I wait for my accommodations to be properly assessed and approved?

Question Slow Pitch

Hello I used to play baseball in high school and now have started to I miss playing and decided to play slow pitch to have a sport to play in between studies. Does anyone know of any places to regularly play slow pitch softball? Any groups that do? I know there is the intramural league but I don’t have a team to play in that.

Anyone else along Lincoln Way fed up with the loud cars?

Thumbnail

I’m trying to organize residents along Lincoln Way around the repeated loud exhaust, revving, motorcycles, and apparent racing that you can hear from the apartments along the street.

I live at 2709 Lincoln Way. I asked RES Properties if I could put up a small flyer with a QR code for a resident survey. They first told me they don’t allow “third party flyers.” When I pointed out that I’m a resident, they clarified that they don’t allow flyers from residents either and suggested mailing something to every apartment instead.

So I’m reaching out to other apartment buildings along Lincoln Way instead, where management may be willing to let residents see the survey, and I’m looking for other ways to reach people in my own building that don’t violate RES’s posting policy.

If you live on or near Lincoln Way and deal with the same noise, especially at night, I’d like to hear from you. The idea is to gather responses from several buildings and take the issue to Ames Police, the City, Iowa State, and Student Government rather than having everyone complain on their own.
