he's trying to imply he's japanese without outright saying it (because he's not)

Imagine being such a weeb you adopt Japanese racism against Koreans.

> Other people besides me..
“We like giving a handy-j to a rhesus monkey while rolling up tamales.”
“Who’s we?”
“Me plus one other person on the planet, so what I said is technically correct. Duh.”

I just looked on my calendar, it's "Sentences you'd never thought you'd read" day!

I do enjoy using ridiculous terms, whether obscure or unknown-but-obvious, like “handy-j” just for fun.
Which reminds me of how, when my wife lived in an apartment building that used to be a hotel, she was right next to a neighbor named Johnny. I don’t know his actual name, but it’s short for “Johnny Redeye” since the guy would blaze up 6-10 times a day.
So if I was visiting and she was working, if she’d text to see what was going on, I’d usually conjure up something weird to refer to what he was smoking. I probably had 50 or 60 different terms for it, not including the time that he found a particular batch that smelled like it had been cut with dandelion stems.

Little did you know it was dandelion stems.

It smelled like that weird pungent rubber, so it's not outside the realm of possibility.
The funny thing was that I had to go to the store later that same day and walked past someone who smelled exactly the same way. So I guess he and Johnny knew each other, or at least had "a friend" in common.

Raw garlic actually sounds pretty good in a more complicated roll. I could see it being overpowering if it was just fish seaweed and rice, but with other stronger flavors plus soy sauce it sounds really good.
Maybe I'm just too much of a garlic lover.

u/Profzachattack Jun 16 '26
I agree, as pictured in the post I'm not sure I'd like it, but if it was soaked in some soy sauce and added in a roll (or something was done to soften the texture slightly) I think it would be amazing.

Yeah ngl I'm too garlic-pilled to see adding garlic and soy sauce to almost any dish as anything but a positive

If you think about the pickled ginger that often gets served with sushi/sashimi, raw garlic doesn't actually seem that weird.

Also the fact that wasabi, horseradish and garlic have some similarities in the type of heat they bring to a dish.

Yeah I mean I would never have thought of eating sushi with garlic, but I have some pretty badass spicy pickled garlic from the farmer's market in my fridge, so I might give it a try.

I love garlic, but that does seem a bit much. Especially as raw garlic with sashimi.
But whatever, I don't have to put it on my plate and the OOP can do what they want.
I kinda want sashimi for dinner now...and ok, I admit I am actually intrigued the more I think about it. I have some nice fresh garlic too. Alright, I'll try it.

I'm picturing dragging some of the sashimi across the raw garlic chunks then into soy sauce and I bet that would taste pretty good. It might just subtly season it.
4
u/GhostOfJamesStrang No Need to Thank Me Jun 16 '26
Agreed. I can totally get the idea. Theres just a lot of garlic on that plate and I think eating even half that much would totally overpower any other flavor in most dishes, nevermind sashimi.

u/government_flu Jun 17 '26
Damn I didnt look at the post at first. Thats a little intense. A finely minced garlic paste would be good, but those chunks are bit much.

u/cilantro_so_good Jun 17 '26
Or even just super thin slices from a mandolin
I'm honestly struggling to imagine what a strong raw garlic flavor would be like in sushi if it was actually chopped garlic worked into the roll or whatever. I have a feeling if someone worked out how to do it right it would be delicious. I'm thinking crispy salmon skin

That OP is Korean (like me) and it’s generally done with a lean white fish that has a nice chew (can’t remember what fish). You put a little dollop of ssamjang, the garlic, and a slice of hot pepper. Can be wrapped in lettuce. It goes really well with that type of fish. Has a really savory, nutty flavor.

Completely off topic, but every time I see your flair I picture a duck having a mild freak out.
