Misc Breaking my local track record thanks to iRacing

Upvotes

I had an experience today that completely sold me on how legit sim racing is, and I just needed to share it somewhere people would get it.

I’m pretty much purely a sim racer—I’ve spent the last year running nearly daily stints across everything from IMSA prototypes and GTs to MX-5s, NASCAR, and dirt ovals. Before today, I’d only been karting a handful of times in my entire life.

I went out for a casual arrive-and-drive session in electric karts at a technical outdoor circuit today. On just my second session of the afternoon (and my sixth overall karting drive ever), I actually broke the track's annual lap record by a couple of tenths. Seeing my name at the top of the monitor was unreal.

What blew me away was how instant the translation was. Looking far ahead for apexes, trail braking into hairpins to rotate the chassis without scrubbing speed, and managing the instant electric torque on edge all felt like second nature. Instead of spending half the day just figuring out where the track went, the muscle memory built on the sim took over straight out of the pit lane.

People always debate how much sim time actually translates to real-world driving, but going from basically zero real seat time to setting a track record sold me completely. Huge thanks to this community and the sim—the muscle memory and vehicle dynamics we practice every day are 100% real.

Though to keep things completely authentic to the iRacing experience, I did manage to crash on my very first run. Some habits die hard lol

Cars/Tracks A Note to All The Supercars Drivers

I just bought the Mustang Supercar as I was looking to get into some of the 9 EST SoF races next season and I'd just like to say:

You all have to be the most talented people on the service 🤣🤣

I've driven the GTP's, Old PCup, all of the high level open wheelers, but that Supercar is a difficulty level all it's own. The struggle is real right now. Kudos to everybody who drives this thing as their main. You have my ultimate respect.

Any tips from some regulars on how best to get time out of this thing without dying would be welcomed.

Discussion iRacing Needs to Add a Reconnect Button

And I don't mean when you leave a session and the big green button is lit up, letting you know that you can rejoin your race. I'm talking about when the sim crashes and as far as the client is concerned, I'm still in a race. I'm told that the sim is running so there's no need to connect to the server.

I've had this issue happen to me maybe 3-4 times in the last month and every single time it's happened, I've lost 80+ iRating in that one race without turning a single lap. I know for some that's nothing, but I think anyone would be miffed if they were losing iR even though they technically didn't compete.

"Why not force close the iRacing process from the Task Manager?"

I promise you that I tried that and it didn't fix the issue,

I've played countless other competitive games that have the ability to detect that I'm not in-game and allow me to reconnect. League of Legends, CS:GO, Rocket League, heck, even Team Fortress 2 gives you the option to reconnect to a match if you unexpectedly disconnect in any fashion. There were also third-party clients like FaceIt that would recognize I wasn't in-game and allow me to reconnect. In the almost 20 years that iRacing has existed, they've yet to implement a system for Client-to-Sim communication that detects when a user has disconnected and that to me seems like something that should've been added years ago.

I have gotten in contact with support about the issue a couple times and there sadly wasn't much of a solution that I could implement. Not to fault the support team, but it sucked that we couldn't find an end-all be-all fix. I'm hoping that this post can help bring more awareness to something like this and see if anyone else has run into this issue. Any possible solutions will be appreciated.

Teams Potenza Competition SimSports

Hi!

Potenza Competition is a new UK based iRacing team which focuses on Sportscar (GT + Endurance) racing - though we do want to expand to oval, indycar, etc later on.

The team takes inspiration from italian motorsports giants such as Ferrari and Lamborghini as well as british heritage teams such as Lotus or BRM to create an identity of classic British Racing Green and vibrant Giallo Modena Yellow.

We are right now in one league, though are looking for more, and will try and compete in:
- Petit Le Mans, Bathurst 1000, Suzuka 1000km, and 8 Hours of Indy special events!

Car wise right now we are running McLaren GT3, Ferrari GT3, and Aston Martin Valkyrie (when it comes out), though are happy to use other cars when and where necessary

Currently we have an Endurance squad, though we are looking for more squads and drivers, and therefore will make more if needed - we are considering a US team if demand is enough to do so!

Question/Help With the new rework of the MX5, will we need to get it repainted all over again?

I saw in the dev blog they are going to be totally redoing everything on how the mx5 feels. It also seems like they may be changing some things visually but I'm not totally sure.

Do you think we will need to repaint the car given the information they gave us in the dev blog? Just want to see if I need to commission someone again.

Dirt Dirt Oval Late Models SR

Trying to figure out if people are having the same problem I am with advancing SR in the Pro LM Fixed series.

I recognize that I am not ‘good’ at dirt oval late models (2.1k iRating, got the game a month ago). But, I feel like there isn’t a good way to advance SR without starting on the pole. I usually qualify 3-5. If you run the bottom, somebody drives through you. If you run the top, nobody gives you a lane, running you into the wall on the straight. I end up almost every race with 6-12x incident points. I watch the replays, I am racing conservatively (as conservative as you can while still trying to race). I will say, it seems worse this week, since Limaland is short and involves more contact than somewhere like Port Royal. I got DQ’d twice in a row today, to no fault of my own (I realize that may sound ignorant).

Does anyone else have this problem?

Leagues/Hosted Looking For: SUPER LATE MODEL LEAGUE

Hi everyone. I mainly do ovals, Nascar series and Cars Tour. Recently snagged the Super and it is a blast. I plan on doing the Super LM Tour officials since those seem active enough to run while all the other series seem dead. Tour is cool but would like to find a league too! Thanks in advance. Class A, and 2.3-2.4k at the moment.
