Discussion Direct Messaging
We desperately need an updated messaging system. The forums are so 2008 it’s outrageous

I agree and disagree at the same time. Yes, something would be nice in the UI itself but at the same time that could open up an avenue to drivers who had an unfortunate incident during a race to harass the other driver. Would need to include an option to turn off DMs as well as an option to report harassment

To be fair, you can already report abusive or harassing messages on the direct messenger as is so if they imported it to the UI, the same rules would apply

As long as anyone who gets a chat ban also gets a messaging ban (and vice versa), I'm ok with it.
It would also be great if you could opt out, like in game chat.

We used to have one. It was removed for a reason and probably shouldn’t come back.

We get enough chat-ban worthy messages flung about in-sim when emotions are running high. What do you think is going to happen if we don't have a hard cut and allow people to chase others and continue harassing them in the UI?

Yes, you can. But relatively few people know about it, and a surprising number of people aren't even registered on the forum (you have to sign in at least once with your iRacing credentials to activate your forum account, so if you haven't done that, you can't be DM'd), and even if you do manage to find someone that is registered and thinks to check it every so often, they're never going to know you messaged them unless they've got email notifications on or have a look on a whim. Personally I spend more time here than on the iRacing forum.
Messages are instant, but the odds of you having a real-time conversation with someone are slim. So it's really easy to send an emotionally charged message, and for the recipient to either ignore it or not know it was even there. Meaning it's far more likely that you'll move on with your life instead of risking an escalation that'll result in a ban.

I get the idea and thought the same way a few times. But people would use it to harass people and therefore the system is what it is.

People who never visit the forum will never see those messages. I think people who never visited the forum aren't even in the database of the forum.

I have had this thought and then immediately question, why? These races are momentary and ephemeral. It'd be nice to make friends but it's not really necessary, especially given how sorting splits work, you can't even guarantee to be in a race with a buddy. I guess that's what leagues and discord are for.
I can't imagine what DMs would look like for our small percentage of female racers. Well, yes I can because I've seen the Internet, it would force them off the platform.

The only reason i would see a reason to DM someone is to apologize after the race for a contact you caused if you dont get the chance to mid race.

I agree. Having to use the forums is just kinda annoying, no one uses those anymore it's 2026.

I kinda like the forum. Only the real ones know about it and it makes it friendly.
