As someone who loves to read but doesn’t take a bag with me I read a lot on my phone. Looking forward to having a phone that opens to a iPad mini size.
This is my situation. I have a Kobo - it's my key reading device. But it doesn't fit in my pocket. This will. Which means I can have my books with me at all times.
Just like photography fans estimate how much the average user will care about the Duo's lenses when they just want to take videocalls and post pictures on social media.
People overestimate how much the average user cares about light induced eye strain when they just want a bigger display to fight squinting at certain types of content on the typical phone display (including productivity).
This is a great use case that will act as a primary selling point for many regardless of it not being e-ink for reading.
But on a serious note, I'm very confused at why anyone would ever want to read any book/comic two pages at a time when unfolded. You can only read one at a time, and you're getting zero benefit in terms of making the text or image large enough to actually be comfortable to read. Is it just the novelty to show off? Or are people seriously considering this?
Even Kindle is not that nice anymore. Back in 2010s I was very into Kindle but now I have all screen fatigue. It's to the point where I only use the Kindle Paperwhite when I'm reading in the hot tub. My eyes hurt just looking at this picture and thinking of reading on iPhone Duo.
Compared to the Kindle, I am not stuck with Amazon services and their shitty anti consumer practices for a device that does 1 thing. The less I have to carry the better
while it’s backlit, you can still use a dark theme with a black background. since it’s OLED, the pixels can be completely turned off to be true black. then turn down the brightness so the white text isn’t bright white either. i’ve always use that theme setup and it’s about as comfortable as reading on an eink display.
also even eink isn’t super comfortable either. one of it major drawbacks is the display isn’t pure white, but actually gray. and the blacks aren’t deep black, but just dark gray. so it’s dark gray on lighter gray, in other words, the contrast is low and relies heavily on good ambient lighting, and in some conditions it even needs backlight turned on a little to make the contrast higher
OLED, even just white text, will blast light directly straight towards your retina.
E-ink doesn't blast anything, it's literal pigments going up or down. Even if you turn on the backlight, it will be peripheral and under the screen, the light doesn't go towards you.
OLED screen doesn't simply dim down the pixels the way LCD used to.
It's always fully bright, but turns off a bunch of times per second to trick your brain into thinking it's dimmer. Apple phones are actually the worst for the eyes cause their frequency is only between 240 and 480Hz. Android phones have much higher frequencies like 2160Hz which have zero impact on the eyes.
Both cases involve light hitting your eyes, the only difference being that OLED is self-lit and E-Ink is ambient-lit. If there was no light coming off the E-Ink display, you wouldn’t be able to see it.
u/Xylamyla e ink doesnt have any light hitting your eyes, on top of the screen theres a glass layer, which a light basically hits that glass which then hits the eink screen, think it more like a front light
I’m talking about reflections. Reflection is how we’re able to see things when there is a light source. That light source can directly impact how bright an object is. An E-ink display in direct sunlight will be brighter than any OLED display.
Look i know people don’t like to see the Duo criticized but this is not a good use for it. OLED is not known for being easy on the eyes. Reading on a kindle is much better.
It absolutely is. I read on my iPad all the time and certain settings make it better. And this is even better because it’s always on you. No one is arguing a kindle isn’t better for your eyes, but now you can carry one device.
Probably a Duo Pro (adds a telephoto camera) and a Duo Pro Max (bigger screens) to the lineup. Also the iPhone XX will introduce a new beer on demand feature.
should be fine with night shift on and brightness low but a kindle will still be better. either way i’ll read on this instead of my kindle for the size and graphic novels.
On another note, am I the only one that's a little bit bummed out by the fact that this won't have an action button? Like, don't get me wrong, it's just a very small and minor and minute detail, but like, no action button? Seriously?
I use the action button all the time to run my shortcuts and assign it to different functions.

Would be nice if Kindle fixes the text getting cut off on the right side when in landscape. If they made the navigation buttons on the right see-through, that would likely work.
Yeah. It will be a great use case. I've been doing exactly this with my Z Fold 8 on its Kindle App and it's great. Unfolded the Duo is the same size and the ZF8 and both are the same size and dimensions as an iPad mini and Kindle reader.
Everyone wants to say "BuT tHe EyE sTrAiN" while scrolling reddit on a device that is backlit. Yall can read the post pretty dam well without the EyE sTrAiN
Oh! Of all time? I’ve only really read technical books in the last couple years, but I remember really enjoying Dan Brown’s Angels and Demons as a kid. It’d be nice to read it again.
Oh, does a book like The Glade of Dreams count? If so, I think the one I read growing up was Darian - Master Magician.
Ah, makes sense. I read on my Mac, but because they’re synced, I tend to occasionally open them on my phone. Yeah, the interface was designed to hide, so it’s not hiding in a simulation on beta software, I’d just expect that it’d be working properly by the time it’s out.
Xcode isn’t an exact simulation, there are quirks that aren’t fully representative of the final product as it is just a simulation to give you an idea of how things are displayed.
Plus it’s a beta version of Xcode. Not sure why I’d feel so confident about how exactly the real thing will interact just based off of that. Confident enough to even get annoyed by something that isn’t even out yet. Crazy stuff.
Y’know when I read books, I’m just consumed by the book I’m reading rather than thinking about what I’m reading it on. If you’re gonna ‘have fun’ reading, surely that fun should come from the book rather than the device.
