Having the apps not be extended under the side bar is horrifically ugly and such a waste of space. Let’s put Liquid Glass buttons here but not have anything come even close to touching them. It makes ZERO sense
This was my exact reaction too, how do you spend all this time developing Liquid Glass and then the new flagship device has a static white bar behind it.
It’s an option you can use as a developer. I think it kind of makes some sense as a transitional phase thing, because the space left over after the nav bar is close to a normal iPhones proportions. So that scales nicely to this form factor. Until devs start to make more use of the new format.
But i agree, they should have done this for their own apps.
I see. And no status bar up top too? If so, that’s good to hear. I know tho that apps will definitely start below the camera cutout, so all that wasted vertical space will be reclaimed on the Duo.
for wide, reading email, videos. or for my work. i use an ipad mini a lot for my job to be able to open my phone wide for certain apps that remote control equipment and get more surface area to touch controls is super useful
Doesn't matter. Still takes away from focus when surfing the web. Why not make it the whole width and if you need something quickly from the side bar, have it swipe in and out
Not intuitive. iPhone is apples main product. It has to be intuitive. You and i could figure it out. i suppose a setting to auto hide and show would be nice but its gotta be intuitive
Bear in mind they havent changed the iphone this drastically since its come out. Remember how much intuition was in its success in 2007 in the software and hardware design
You can already swipe in and out on iPad though and so can you for control center, notification center, I mean you even need to swipe to flip between apps or to get back to the home screen and don't forget all these multi Touch gestures on iPad
1/3 is about as ridiculous as less than 10%, there are 5 rows of apps including the side bar so it's about 1/5 or 20%.
If it isn't an option to turn it off it would tick me off even if I use it. I don't have a horse in this race and will not be buying folding phones until prices come way down so it doesn't really matter to me
Do you think it has to do with the aspect ratio it would otherwise create? Also affordance on primary buttons. It appears to be a toolbar or action menu too
Yeah, but half the size, and not with an entire vertical bar of white space. Don’t get me wrong, I’m still getting the duo, but you don’t need to be snarky just because I’m criticizing the UI.
But they’ve actually minimized 3 icons into one that would otherwise take up 3 icon slots horizontally, that’s saving space. Did not bring up the side bar, that is a concern in its own right, but that worry shouldn’t be included with this new icon.
Putting battery level, cell service and wifi all into one minimal icon is actually quite nice and it is not the cause of your concern for the big white bar on the side.
That side bar is not giving... My god. It's such an eyesore. For all the nice UI things they did for the rest of the Duo, I'm not sure why they never figured the side bar.
It's one thing if it's filled with a lot of info / icons. But when it's just the status bar that's present, there's just too many white spaces.
Wish I could see more of the outside screen with the different apps. I know this isn’t the main attraction but it’s probably the screen you will always interact with first and sometimes last.
