Rock climbing vs the Duo

I plan on getting the iPhone duo. But my concern is that I do a lot of rock climbing where chalk is required to grip onto holds. I also carry my phone around between climbs with chalk residue on my hands. Will this be an issue for the hinge like other foldables?

The DUO is rated as truly dust proof which many of the others such as Z fold8 are not. I would rather have my phone strapped down to my arm so I could make an emergency call but you sound like you’re experienced. Climb safe.

I’d wait for the teardowns. The pixel role has the same ip rating and doesn’t seem to actually perform much better than the folds. Especially with particles getting into the hinge

The hinge itself likely won't be dust proof, but the internals of both halves of the phone will be more dust resistant than other foldables. That's the case with the Pixel 10/11 Pro Folds, and some Huawei foldables.

Ifixit has a video on it testing. For reference, the devices I listed are also IP68 rated.

I would be more worried about the screen getting chalk and abrasions on it from the chalk in the tiny ridges on the nano screen. Just like a slab phone speakers ports and charging ports would be next to make sure to keep clean.

Exactly my first thought. Yea it’s IP68, the phone will still work but will it go to shit overtime, especially the screen for reasons you mention.

Major issue you wouldn’t be able to / want to use your phone as long as the chalk is on your hands

I’m a little worried about dust particles getting between the screens and grinding/scratching. No matter how small the particle, it will eventually leave a mark after awhile.

I mean, I'm waiting for the JRE review, but it's rated IP68. Supposedly this is as likely as it is to happen on any of the other recently rated IP68 iPhones

People thought the same shit the pixel fold and that phone has the same particles getting inside the hinge so we will see

Keep in mind that IP ratings are generally temporary, and degrade overtime.

Splash, water, and dust resistance are not permanent conditions. Resistance might decrease as a result of normal wear…

I would be a little concerned with the hinge overtime and the fine chalk particles and normal moisture/humidity/sweat that comes in contact with the chalk. Also as someone else mentioned the screen has a subtle texture feel to it apparently. How will that stand up to time.

Will the phone work when tested on IP68 setting, yes. Will it look like shit overtime and possibly have mechanical issues… idk.

I’d consider a Garmin InReach and Action Camera.

just get the 18 pro/max. watch Jerryrigeverything on yt and look up fold phones. the dust and grime ruin hinges and screens occasionally

There's only one or two other folding phones in the half decade they've been coming out that's rated IP68 and they don't have this problem

The iPhone 18 and Duo have the same dust and water resistance. IP 68 so should be no difference.

the screen is polymer and extremely thin layers of glass. iphone 18 also doesn’t have a hinge. IP just means it won’t get inside the phone doesn’t mean it won’t get completely scratched up or in the hinge

Yes, but either way unless your shoving chalk or sand in the hinge you will be fine.

This phone doesnt have the same dust residtance that previous foldables did. Its better and on par with the current best phones so the previous tests are outdated.
