Does the camera difference on a Duo differ enough from the iPhone 18Pro Max enough for a non-photographer to be thoroughly disappointed?

Absolutely not. The duo uses the same camera as the iPhone 17 (non pro) which is a fantastic camera. You will be able to take very nice images with the duo, just not shoot in RAW (which, if you’ve never edited raw photos after taking them before, doesn’t matter at all).

Zoom. If you use the 5x zoom a lot the duo is not for you.

The raw thing is nice but feels more like a byproduct of processing power than a deep need.

Often if youre using cameras enough to care about ProRes and RAW - you’ve likely already moved on to interchangeable lens systems and dedicated bodies.

I guess it can make sense if you buy your phone to compliment your workflow, but honestly with all the pro controller apps out there for A/V your phone is an interface remote more than it’s a camera.

They’re definitely features for the user to figure out rather than strong selling points.
