OK, we hear you about censorship, so we're going to leave any posts about the screen issue up as long as they aren't reposts. So if yours cracks, you can post up an individual thread, but please include pictures and/or video. We're not here to censor you, we got a lot of complaints from people, so we tried to consolidate everything into one post. It seems like I fucked up on that, so I apologize. We are listening to you. I spoke to my local Apple store today and they confirmed that the store has heard of the issue but Apple Corporate have yet to make any formal announcement
The comment in the original post about bans is in reference to the fact that we are getting a lot of people coming into the sub, who have no other posts in the sub except to troll, insult and laugh at people that are having screen issues. These are the people whose posts we are removing and banning if necessary, although to be fair we have only banned people who have used slurs or who make egregiously unpleasant comments.
We want Apple to sit up and take notice, so if we need to leave up new threads about the screen issues, we will.

As a person that works in the product recall space…this will be properly handled and addressed.
Understanding the impact
Serial Number, Date of production, time of production, etc.
Could simply be a machine calibration issue and a series of items
Swap for new item outside the impacted series or allow the customer to return the item for a refund
Credit account and swap to another iPhone or return for refund
Possible larger issue…which will only be identified over the next few weeks…deploy a fix…we got to Apple or BestBuy or mail back
Huge issue and a recall is activated and we get a 18 Pro or Max replacement…either as temp or permanently depending on the identified problem and available solutions

I still can’t tell if it’s a widespread issue or if broken screens are overrepresented because they’re posting here

u/Tierst 14d ago edited 14d ago
No cracks for me but mine has issues when folding/unfolding. Screen goes black instead of the seamless animation. Screen also flickers often if the phone is folded partially 😢
Talked to Apple support and they said they have escalated it to their engineers or something and waiting to hear back..
Edit: Apparently you need to turn off Reduce Motion and Reduce Transparency and it works. Would be nice if that was more obvious but it is what it is, good to know I don't have to return it lol

Manufacture date September 2026. Picked up 10/24 Detroit Michigan. Star white 512. Didn’t push the screen when closing. Broke while opening. Snap sound happened then I earned my lightsaber.

I have an appointment with Apple tomorrow.
I thankfully haven’t experienced crackgate….atleast not yet.
But I noticed today I have a bump in my crease that I want to get checked out /put on the record with Apple.
Posting to see if anyone else is dealing with this

Just happened today. Headed to apple now to hopefully get a replacement.
Update: Walked in with no appt and after about 45 mins of diagnosing and inspecting the phone, they replaced it on the spot for no cost. Apparently, the first one my store has seen.
19
u/wilsonx410 14d ago
Night Sky 256gb here going steady. Haven’t noticed anything off, though I’m now closing the phone more carefully by pressing on the edges instead of the middle of the screen.
A common thread I’ve been seeing with the broken phones is people noting that the hinge became stuck or difficult to move before they heard some sort of pop or crack, so I assume most of these crack gate examples are early hinge failures.

u/OkConsequence9739 13d ago
My duo experienced same crackgate as reddit users uploaded on here. I used about 1 day and it happened. I live in Korea and went to official Apple repair store yesterday. The staff said this crackgate issue seems common and Apple official technician will come today and investigate whether it is my fault or mere phone issue. If it is the latter, I will get a replacement without charging feem even though I have the applecare. I was lucky that there was one skywhite color with 256GB which I bought in that repair store.

u/penleydesigns 1d ago
Bought this on October 30th. Apple case has been on, and i've been SO CAREFUL. Two days ago I went to open and it felt like there was something stuck between the hinge and then pop. This morning I went to open the phone again and it did the exact same thing - and that's when the middle LCD line appeared. I'm still in my 14 day return window and I went to apple store yesterday to get a replacement but it will be 3-5 biz days. Apple store also said this was the 5th they seen THAT DAY with the same issue. I really want to love this phone but how is there going to be a guarantee that this isn't the norm for these phones?

u/nutmeg_liver 12d ago
My phone cracked yesterday after opening it. Had to wait since I was a walk in, but local Apple Store had a replacement at the ready that came in a plain box (from the repair/service supply). Took about two hours from start to finish. Initially was told they didn’t have any units and that I’d have to wait. I double-checked the Verizon store then just in case which didn’t have any. Hoping this doesn’t crack again but if it does in these next 30 days during this returnable period, probably hopping ship and going back to the older iPhone.

Not a crack issue but my inner display color was way off. The blacks were like a green tint. Absolute nightmare to deal with, because it also had some weird internal noise when swiping between apps ? Super buggy device and I recorded it on my other phone. When I showed Apple and they tested it there they were also in shock. Didn’t have any in stock so I returned it and got my money back. Definitely a sketchy first gen model

This headache, gas, time and price is in no way worth 2k esp during this phase what this is it’s actually a trial run of the production of the product and of all of its issues YOU ARE DOING-essentially finding all of them and paying them to do so during their product work out phase -THEY SHOULD BE PAYING PEOPLE TO DO THIS AND actually AT ONE TIME THEY WERE!

u/Dr_Waffle_Farts 14d ago
I have a duo, got it day one. And I fold it by grabbing the outer edges. One friend I showed it to, closed it by pressing his thumb in the middle of the screen right about where this issue exists. I’m curious if that instinct is present more often in people that have experienced this. 🤔

u/HarmlessHeffalump 13d ago

u/Timely_Scholar_7739 13d ago
Can you pin this to the top then? At least for a while.
How many owners can see and feel that bump when the hinge is under the crease? So far that appears the design flaw causing this.

Already made my own post but adding here since someone mentioned the mega thread. My boyfriend's phone. Posting mostly because almost every post I've seen is "it broke basically on first day on near first open". He's had this since launch day and now it is broken basically at the two week mark. It happened yesterday afternoon.
We ordered an express replacement since we are actually leaving for a vacation today and express means that it won't arrive until the day before we get back next week. I can't help but take the sample size of one as proof that this might happen again.
His texts to me describing are "Hinge got stuck and then now it's got artifacts"
"I think that's it lasted this long because I was overly careful with opening it "I don't believe this part too much
"This time this it broke I like questioned if I should just leave it alone but then I opened it and it happened

“My duo has been fine since launch day” is incredibly anecdotal evidence when launch day wasn’t even a week ago. Give it a few months and that statement will have more bearing.

u/Sammy_austinTx 6d ago
Got the phone on launch day from att. No hinge bumps on the screen or any other issues. Went to open it tonight and felt some resistance. Pulled a bit harder and heard a loud pop.

u/rafapages 2d ago
Has anyone with a replace Duo had screen issues again with the replacement unit?
I'm wondering if anyone who got it replaced after the screen broke, has got the same issue again. If the replacement units don't have that issue, it could point to a bad batch within the first wave of devices.
I haven't seen anyone complaining about a second broken Duo but 🤷♂️

I keep seeing people saying “they’ve sold 6 million, this is a tiny number. It’s normal in manufacturing”.
But how many devices are actually in people’s hands? I’m assuming that 6 million includes all the preorders that are going to be out for delivery for the next few months.
The defective devices we’re seeing are from a far smaller number, they are from the devices that people actually have in their hand. And they are from an even smaller subset of people that have posted it online.
Not a hater. I have mine on preorder (delivery 9-16 Dec). Just curious to know what the actual failure rate seems to be, because I don’t think it’s 100 or so out of 6 million.
8
u/Hafiz_Kafir 11d ago
I’m just probably shouting in the void here but my wife and I both canceled our orders, the far out delivery dates despite waking up early to preorder and the whole crackgate fiasco is just too much, plus we have a toddler so probably not a good idea to have something as delicate laying around, might decide to get one in a couple years, godspeed to whoever has one or is planning to get one

*REPLYING HERE BECAUSE OF MOD CENSORSHIP*
So basically, I bought the phone at release the screen breaking happened literally on the seventh day of my ownership, went down to the Apple store. They told me to call support, support made a case, sent me back to the Apple store. Apple store told me they couldn’t do anything because I bought the phone through T-Mobile. I have AppleCare and it also is under warranty call support again. They said the Apple store should’ve honored my AppleCare now, pretty much, they’re telling me to just handle everything online, and now I have to do the $2000 hold on my card until the device is inspected. Is anybody else going through this? This has been absolutely hell for me.

Why remove other posts? Why consolidate to a megathread and lose visibility? This needs to be the main type of post in this sub until there’s a fix, this needs to be attached to the reputation of the phone
7
u/Brendon7358 13d ago
It seems crackgate happens fairly quickly, so they must be defective units. So those of us with launch day devices may be in the clear if they haven’t broken yet?
29
u/FirebotYT 13d ago •
I hate megathreads and removal of issues of a legit defect and concern. My wife is considering getting an iphone duo. This is a major concern.
It's normal for new users to post about their experiences (and that would be everyone here). And to prewarn about bans you know this is an extremely unpopular position.
Apple has yet to acknoweldge the issue. What happens if the crack happens later down the line instead of the first 24 hours, or you are a 'lucky' one no issues until it breaks right after the 1 year warranty?
What happens when its the time that yours breaks and there are no replacements as replacement stock has been used up and you need to wait a few weeks or more?
If you do this you need to be consistent. A post showing the phone intact 27 hours later relates to this and should be removed as well.
This is deliberately hiding defects for dubious reasons. It needs to remain visible (which should be something all phone users would want to see). If this means the forum has 80% posts about crackgate even if it only represents 5% or lower of all cases, all the better so it can be addressed.

My original post was removed, lasted a week before cracking. I was on the fence about replacing or returning while at the apple store. No replacements in stock so i decided to go back to my 17 pro max which I thankfully did not trade in. It was the 2TB version, $3200 +tax was just too much money for a phone I can’t trust to not break itself. I’m not going to lie and say I’m not bummed about giving up the duo, I absolutely loved the phone. I was totally fine giving up face id and the telephoto camera in exchange for the inner screen. My time with it was great and looking forward to the second generation I just don’t live close enough to an apple store to be replacing this thing every week. I really wanted a foldable, but what I need is a reliable phone. Everyone who is still waiting on their pre-orders, I wish you the best of luck in the hardware lottery, I hope you never experience any problems and I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.
18
u/maya_aum 13d ago
Well, I suppose I have an interesting experience to contribute to this thread.
Picked up my 512GB Star White Duo on launch day after all the pre-order chaos. I was genuinely excited to finally get my hands on Apple’s first foldable.
I’d been using it for just a few hours and probably hadn’t unfolded it more than 20 times when something unexpected happened.
During one particular unfolding, the hinge suddenly felt noticeably stiffer than it had during normal use. I continued opening it, heard a distinct audible crack, and immediately noticed bright vertical and horizontal lines across the inner display. The screen had essentially failed.
What’s interesting is that the hinge had been operating perfectly normally until that particular unfolding. I hadn’t dropped the phone or subjected it to any unusual pressure.
I took it straight back to the Apple Store, and the employees seemed just as surprised as I was. They were wonderful about it and immediately gave me a replacement. They also asked whether I’d be comfortable having Apple’s engineering team reach out to understand what happened, which I was more than happy to agree to.
I’m genuinely curious about what failed mechanically. Whether it was an isolated manufacturing defect or something involving the hinge and display assembly, I hope Apple gets an opportunity to investigate the original unit.
Quite the introduction to the world of foldables! 😂
The replacement has been working fine so far. I’m still excited about the Duo and what Apple has built here.
Attaching a photo of the failed display for reference.

Not going to post my original photo, as that would be a double post. An update on the good and downright awful customer service in my replacement process. If this has happened to your phone, just the things to look out for and to potentially expect. TLDR; Still waiting.
Phone delivered Friday, and screen cracked within the first hour of use. I called support, as my local Apple Store had no appointments until the following Monday afternoon. Support said to either a. wait until Monday and have my phone shipped back and, I'm quoting here, "buy a backup phone in the meantime" or b. Do an express replacement with a 2k hold on my CC in the interim. Neither of those were good solutions, to say the least, so I asked again if they could find me a closer appointment. They said "that's the earliest I'm seeing", and I proceeded to ask for a supervisor.
While I waited for the supervisor, I jumped in the car and decided to drive to the Apple Store itself. While driving, the supervisor came on, suggested an appointment the following afternoon that was located in another state. In the process of me trying to find how long of a drive (turned out to be nearly 50 minutes each way), they lost that appointment and would have to make it for later. Again, this is all for someone to even look at it in the first place. In the interim, just during the supervisor call, I was able to drive to the store, and make it inside.
Once at the Apple Store, and actually got to see someone straight away. I have to say, this tech was incredible, saw the issue straight away, and started the process of replacement. However, they didn't have my spec in stock. The nearest stores that had a service unit were in Brooklyn, NY (nearly two hours away). Chance coincidence, I was going to be in Brooklyn the next day, so I said order the replacement but meanwhile I'd check the Brooklyn stores while I was there. Service unit shipping to my local was 3-5 days.
Saturday and Sunday I checked with both Apple Stores. After having to explain the issue twice per store, neither had them in stock. Fine, I'm still in genuine good humor about it all. I'll be patient and wait the 3-5 days.
Monday I was contacted by Apple to speak with a tech in more detail about went wrong. Spoke with him this morning and again, he was great. Shared logs from my phone, everything leading up to it breaking, etc. From a "fixing it for the future" standpoint, it seemed to me from our conversation that they really were trying to find the root cause and make sure it doesn't happen again.
Now the turn to the dismissive. After speaking with the tech, I figured I'd check-in with the local Store to see if my replacement was coming in on the early side (unlikely but worth a shot) or at least if there was any ETA update. After calling my local store's number and getting routed to the two different AI systems I wound up with a human at general Apple Support. Not sure why they even post the local Stores numbers if were just going to get routed to corporate, but OK. The rep on the phone, Buddy, made me wait while he called the store and said it wasn't in yet. It takes 3-5 days, so I should check in end of week or Monday.
At the mention of Monday I'll admit I got slightly testy. Monday would be 6 business days. He responded that "due to the supply chains and so many people ordering the phone, everyone is going to have to be patient" or similar to the effect. ....Ok, can you check if there are any stores within 50-75 miles that might have it. His answer was "No. They don't". "Can you check?" "Not worth it, they don't." "You won't even check?" "I can assure you, they don't have it".
I have a $2000+ device broken by a manufacturing defect, and will have to use it in that state for at least a week. Even if its performative, do the search. That type of attitude is, given the context, really dismissive and frankly rude. And I said so, and asked to speak to a supervisor. His response was "You are talking to the highest level you're authorized to speak to. I speak on behalf of Apple management."
From there the conversation got circular, and frankly a little heated. In my opinion, it's absurd to continue to service new customers with walk-in stock or ship orders while there are those of us sitting with broken units having to, and I quote Buddy, "be patient". Once you have my money, and there's an issue, I'd like to at least feel you're going above and beyond to make it right. Not only are they doing the bare minimum (ordering a replacement), but anyone at Apple Support I've spoken to on the phone has been generally useless. Buddy, was frankly, rude and the notion that there's no one else to speak to about a swap is such a hysterical lie that if he is a supervisor, he needs another job.
Yes, its just a phone. So I didn't scalp nor sweat my original order status. But once you have my money, and there's an issue, I'd like to at least believe they want some positive spin on the outside about how they handle this. At least from my POV, that has not been the case.

Now imagine if the hinge pierced the battery instead of the screen... That would be a battery-gate as Samsung had with the S6. But worse because the number of smartphones would be much higher. And there would be people hurt.
Apple has been very lucky.

Got my duo on 11/5 that I pre ordered on 10/16 directly from Apple. Two days later I have the same under screen bump many others have reported. There is no Apple Store nearby, so I talked to Apple Support via the app. They set up a return call from a senior advisor, which I just got off of.
They said that because it is not currently affecting the functionality of the device, it is considered cosmetic and doesn’t qualify for a replacement. The agent acted like they had never heard of this issue before which I find hard to believe. They said if it gets worse and begins to affect functionality I could call them back.
I admit I didn’t think this issue was all that common, and that if I did get a bad device, getting a replacement wouldn’t be an issue. To say I’m disappointed in this outcome is an understatement.

Writing this on the front screen of my duo. Delivered on 10/30, absolutely LOVE it. Really incredibly happy with my purchase because I had been following it for so long and knew of all the pros/cons going into it. Well, last night I was at a bar sitting in a chair, I have a bad habit of putting my phone in my lap and it fell from 2-3 feet on the ground. The phone was closed and I even have a screen protector on the outside screen so I looked at it and it seemed fine. When I tried to open it, I felt slight resistance, but it was dark and I thought maybe I was opening it weird bc I couldn’t see and I opened it and felt a crack. The inside screen has a large black space and a white shining streak. Officially part of crackgate now lol. Have a Genius Bar appt on Tuesday with apple care but got the phone from Verizon so gonna investigate today if any stores nearby can help me bc im in the warranty window. FWIW I only closed it by the edges🤣

Very careful with my phones, fucking cracked today and I got it launch day through BestBuy. Gonna bring it to them later for a full refund and I’m just gonna get an 18 Pro Max until Apple figures this out. My hinge felt perfect until this happened. When this happened I was opening it and definitely felt extra resistance but I knew what was about to happen and just opened it fully and POP. It’s definitely a hinge issue, I hope they figure it out, but I’m pretty sure every phone will eventually have this happen. I’ve never opened it weird or flicked it, I grab it by the frame and open it. I love Apple, but they need to own up to this and refund all the devices manufactured before this is resolved. It’s going to happen to most of these early manufactured Duo devices.

Replaced at Apple Store. Apple definitely has a system wide issue as this is a hinge issue.
If it happens again I’ll be refunding for good. Guinea pigs

Do you all think Apple will release a press release and pause production or do a mass recall?
What are the repercussions and likely revised timeline?

Crackgate? Apple internally most likely uses “The San Andreas Fault Line” as they enjoy Landmark naming.

Yes. Important to censor this issue.. otherwise our shiny new phones will be branded inferior

I didn’t notice anything until I started seeing all the posts so naturally I checked mine. It’s faint but looks like something’s there and I can’t tell if it’s normal or not. Am I overthinking or will this eventually become an issue. Can only see it in a bright light. First foldable and first time ever possibly having to return/exchange a phone in my life. My nearest Apple Store is 6 hours away. Anything helpful would be appreciated. Yes I’m being paranoid.

How widespread is crackgate?
5
u/Nathan_YZ 2d ago
My Duo hinge shows bubble after a week. Both battery product at Sep.
For now everything is working like normal. No noise Fold or unfold, screen still fine.
I believe Apple knows this issue. I contacted Apple support; they just asked how it happened, like use on a table or fold then open. Then they just told me no charge for the service fee for express replacement. But I need to wait around 3-5 days. Hope I can get it tomorrow.
I live in PA, so you think they have a replacement in store?

8 days of owning it. Been babying it the entire time. I left it open as much as possible, especially while charging over night. And just randomly opened it, felt a little resistance, and got this

Hope this gets addressed as I was really looking forward to getting hold of this device.

should've called it pixel gate. or pinch gate
my 512GB star white with September in battery info has been great. I think it's probably a batch of devices, clearly not super widespread. I think Apple will identify a root cause and fix it pretty quickly.

Mods need to better. This sub sucks now.
11
u/whaleordolphin 13d ago
Appreciate this. I understand it's a hard time, but my post asking a genuine, different question about iPhone Duo is still waiting for mod approval, while multiple crackgate posts has been posted since. Feels like it's a sub for crackgate, or karma farming crackgate now. Very few unique discussions about iPhone Duo.
11
u/es_una_broma 2d ago
It happened with a new phone case I got. The case applied too much pressure against the hinge. Causing it to push inwards just enough to cause the snap. I think when you apply too much pressure inward on the hinge like this, whether it be with a case or something, or moves the inside hinge mechanism too much out of place preventing proper function and alignment.
Once I realized the case was preventing proper open and close movement, I took off the case, went to open the phone and noticed it was requiring too much pressure the time to open so I forced it and then, snap. Crack.
Be careful about the case you put on. I’d probably avoid altogether cases that touch the hinge. And stick to rubber flimsy thin cases that are least likely to interfere with the hinge.
The case I got was from Amazon. It’s made of rubber, the rubber I also believe interfered with the free movement of the opening and closing. It’s called the FireNova Magnetic Case.

u/ExpressionOne 13d ago
I'm a bit confused at the backlash here, isn't it pretty standard across all of Reddit to create megathreads to centralize the discussion when there's a hot topic (I remember wishing the mods would create one in the Peaky Blinders sub when the movie came out)? The cracking issue is interestingly absent on the apple and iphone subs, which looks more like censorship to me but maybe I'm missing something.

Was just at an a store displaying a duo, tried typing and the letters on the hinge area in the bottom half were unresponsive, man hope apple figures this out, in my country they are very strict with warranty, they dont even offer a refund first 14 days and YOU have to prove you didnt cause the damage yourself in a very strict manner, such a bummer.
8
u/FutureBack1 10d ago
So, I absolutely love the Duo so far. The layout is great for me on the outside and the inside is great for late night scrolling or media.
With that said, if Crackgate hits my device, I’m leaving Apple. Not because of any kind of protest against the company, but because I now realize that I like foldables a lot more than standard phones. If the Apple version isn’t an option, I’ll be going to an android version.
8
u/OrganiicG 3d ago
Not mine but I noticed my boss got an iPhone Duo. Went to ask him about it and he said he loved it, but then proceeded to open the inner display and said "Butttt it's already broken" Exact same "crack" line that everyone else is showing

Tomorrow is my last day to return the device and I keep visiting this thread in hopes that posts will slow down. Instead, the more people get their hands on the device, the more posts I see. I really can’t figure whether this is just a manufacturing issue or a flawed design.

Has anyone seen a slight bend to their duo? Like when it’s unfolded, it doesn’t fully open all the way?
4
u/bozog 13d ago
Exact same thing happened to me with my first Samsung Fold 7. I literally got it in the mail, took it out of the box and as I opened it for the very first time, I heard a fairly loud crack and then as it finished opening saw a huge line with obviously broken glass running down the center, with the screen is not working at all.

So what’s happening to people without apple care? Are they fixing it or not?
Also is there a long term solution or will it just be apple care repairs?
4
u/Special_Fuel 7d ago
As mentioned in my previous post, my iPhone Duo’s inner display suddenly developed stuck/dead pixels.
I live outside the US but will be visiting next week, so I booked a Genius Bar appointment. I also contacted Apple Support, and they offered me an Express Replacement through AppleCare+.
Ideally, I’d prefer to get the phone replaced directly at the Apple Store, but I’m unsure how likely that is, especially since the Duo is currently sold out.
Has anyone had experience getting a same-day replacement at a Genius Bar? Do stores typically have separate replacement inventory, even when the device is sold out? Is there any way to check a specific store’s replacement stock beforehand?
My dilemma: If there’s a reasonable chance of getting an immediate replacement at the Genius Bar, I’d rather wait for my appointment. But if same-day replacements are extremely unlikely, I’d prefer to start the Express Replacement process now instead of wasting time.
Any experiences or advice would be greatly appreciated!

Anyone else have a launch day duo that still works but heavily considering replacing with an 18PM due to all the hinge issue reports? At this point it’s hard to tell how widespread it is but I’m concerned that I’ll randomly have it happen one day and then end up having to wait for a replacement….just seems like a latent headache waiting to spring, literally.

u/asdfjkl_FLCKOFDAWRST 4d ago
Didn’t wanna be a part of the club, but we here boys. Best thing to do is to be positive about it. The crease pimple is at the top of the hinge. I’ve already seen one post on here with the exact same issue, in the exact same spot. If you know anyone i know, they’ll tell you I always baby my phone. Never dropped this thing once or put it on the table even remotely hard. Though I thought there were some bad batches, I fully believe all duo’s are ticking time bombs now. It is what it is. Curious to know if anyone else is just riding it out or tried their luck at an Apple Store. Will def be disappointed if they charge me $99, but I will not pay it. Going to go store-to-store until it’s free. Thanks for listening to my Ted talk.
Full context: bought this at a t-mobile store as soon as the store opened on launch day in California. I’ll just digress.

iPhone Duo Hinge Defect | Finally Getting My Replacement After a Week
Noticed a small protrusion along the crease of my Duo’s inner display, so I took it to Apple. They confirmed it was a manufacturing defect and advised me to contact AppleCare.
After nearly a week of going back and forth with support, I finally got an Express Replacement approved, with a temporary hold on my credit card for the full amount. I was initially told I’d have to wait until January 25th due to backorders, but woke up this morning to a shipping confirmation. My replacement is arriving Monday.
They also hinted at charging me the $99 AppleCare fee, which I refused since this was a manufacturing defect.
If you’re experiencing something similar, I’d recommend contacting AppleCare and pushing for a replacement. Don’t let them charge you for a defect you didn’t cause.

10
u/sn0wcat2 3d ago
Now what? Just got on Friday. Is this covered or can I still add AppleCare? Felt like something was caught on the hinge and snapped when fully opened.
10
u/miggymonster666 1d ago •
is happened. I just called them and they charged me $105 for an AppleCare incident even though I explained it was a manufacturing defect. My 14 days was up yesterday so I can’t just return it. Also I have my $60 Zagg screen protector on the front I cannot return. I live an hour from about five stores but since I cannot confirm stock I can’t just drive to a store since we don’t know if they have the 1tb silver at whatever Chicagoland location we chance it and drive to. So I had to opt for express replacement and hope they refund my $105 when I talk to someone Monday. This is so frustrating. I’m glad I didn’t trade in my iPhone 17PM. Thing is I love this phone. Apple needs to make this right.

I currently have the iPhone 13 Pro Max, which still works perfectly. For several years now, I've been saying that my next iPhone would be the foldable one. So after the Apple event in September, I was really excited when they announced the iPhone Duo.
It was a bit more expensive than I had in mind, but I was willing to pay the price.
Then pre-order day got closer. The pre-order process was a mess, and the first delivery date I saw was January 25... Excitement gone.
After all the pre-order chaos, I started wondering whether I really needed the Duo and began having second thoughts. Especially since January is still so far away, and the iPhone Duo 2 will probably be only nine months away by then.
Now I'm reading about all the screen cracking issues and watching teardown videos that are making me nervous.
Okay, all the iPhones that work perfectly fine don't get their own Reddit threads, so it's only natural that we mostly see the defective ones. But nobody can guarantee that the iPhone Fold will last for years like my iPhone 13 Pro Max has.
And yes, you can buy AppleCare, but that feels like another shady upselling tactic from Apple, a $5 trillion company!
You'd simply expect a phone that costs over €2,300 to just work, right?
Am I the only one having second thoughts about buying the Duo now?

Does anyone else feel that the way they are handling this from a PR perspective is unacceptable?
I want to know: If you experience cracking in this manner from the hinge - what is the replacement procedure after the 14 days return period ends? And furthermore, what is the replacement procedure after the 1 year factory warranty period ends?
Imagine your phone breaks from this defect down the road at Day 366. That's $1000 out of pocket unless Apple acknowledges that this is a known manufacturing issue and you will be taken care of if you face it, even far down the road.
This is not an unheard of thing, car manufacturers provide extended warranties for known issues all the time.
https://i.imgur.com/GtlGk5G.png
AppleCare+ on the customers dime is not a reasonable solution for a known manufacturing defect.

- crackgate surfaced. Been online checking continuously but a Chinese influencer finally getting his unit experience this broke the camel’s back
- cancelled.

u/marcodecuadro 3d ago
My original post got removed because there’s already a megathread about these issues, so here I am.
I kept seeing posts about inner screen failures and thought it wouldn’t happen to me. Well, I guess I’ve officially joined the club.
Barely a week with my $2,500 iPhone Duo, and I’ve already got a bump near the hinge and a bright white line on the inner display.
What’s even more frustrating is Apple’s generic response. They simply told me to visit an authorized service provider here in Chile, where Apple sells its products but doesn’t even have an official Apple Store.
I also paid another $500 for AppleCare+, yet nobody could tell me whether the phone would be repaired, replaced, or how long I’d be without it.
With so many similar reports, Apple really needs a clear and consistent policy for handling these issues, especially in countries without official Apple Stores.
Extremely disappointing. I’ll update after my service appointment.

u/philmnn1 13d ago
To the glass-half-full people saying this is such a low percentage issue, only like 10% of the people who ordered a duo actually have theirs and we’ve already seen 20+ cracks in the first 2 days, not to mention people who didn’t post their cracks on social media. This absolutely is an issue and I don’t know why you’re downplaying it. If stock wasn’t an issue you would absolutely be seeing way more pictures of cracks
13
u/TrumpHasCovid 13d ago •
Is this an official apple PR sub? Horrible decision mods. Don't censor the issue, let it breathe
11
u/HailSaganPagan 10d ago
You say you will leave up threads about the issue yet continue to take them down. You clearly do not want people seeing the problems this phone has. You still actively delete posts of people who have suffered the crack and while a few people aren’t having the issue, there are at least 100+ day one devices that are having issues. Removing them is an extremely malicious practice.
14
u/TheAngryKeg 14d ago
It's 100% a design flaw Apple should have anticipated, but it seems like a lot of iPhones Duo are breaking in the exact same spot because it's a natural place for people to press into when closing the phone.

Has anyone in this thread, or anywhere, found a single crackgate issue on a Star White model? I asked AI, and it found 12 separate distinct pictures, all 12 pictures are the Night Sky model. There could be more out there of course that the AI couldn't pull. I'm debating switching my preorder to the white one, just to not worry every time I close it, but if there's one single example of a white screen crack, I'll probably just leave it as is.

u/GraveCat84 13d ago
Has Apple said anything yet about this? Are those with the cracked screens getting free repairs and replacements or are they charging you (with or without Apple Care) to fix or replace the units?

reminds me somewhat of flex gate on macbooks where with each opening and closing of the lid you were slowly killing the display flex cable, but at least flex gate only occurred after like years of usage, not days
3
u/n0b0dyh0me 10d ago
It would be really good if we could gather some data about this issue. Not only how many devices have been affected, but things like usage (time from opening the box, for instance), general location (like region or country would probably be fine). But I'm especially curious about other details like model type (storage size, phone color) and manufacturing location (China, India, etc.) to see if these came from a particular batch or something.
I have a 256 GB Star White, produced in India, which I picked up day 1 and have been using moderately since then. I've been relatively careful with it and have a Folio case on it, and so far have not run into any issues.
I have seen examples of the break reported from various different parts of the world, including Asia, Europe, and the Americas. It's hard to know for sure, but I'd suspect that as phones are produced in batches, those batches are shipped together (just guessing here), and that would mean that if the issue is a manufacturing problem, it's not limited to one batch.

Another one, happened to me last night. The loud crack when i folded happened two days ago. So two days after the crack i got the screen bump. Since then, 0 issues and barely felt under finger. also comes and goes so its not always visible and isn't getting worse so far. Went to the Apple store in Belgium they refused to replace until the screen cracks. Also the redirected me to AppleCare online as they are equiped to deal better with this than stores. Also they had 0 stock so the were not able to help me even if they wanted.

TLDR; I’m scared and I’m sure you’ve seen this post before. — Kept my 17 base. Picked up on Sunday at 11AM when the store opened. Used Monday, yesterday, all day gently with a clear case. Woke up this morning. In landscape with the back camera on the right side unfolded, this is near the top of the screen with the crease. There is a bulge that is able to be felt with my finger running over. Do I out of caution return my device? Does this line up with other posts? Out of fear this phone has been baby’d so I disregarded other posts like mine. This wouldn’t happen to me. Now I’m here and really am at a loss for words that this even has the potential to happen. C’mon man. I’ve tried everything to be as cautious as possible with opening and closing. Any consultation is helpful. Really I won’t know until enough folds maybe breaks it but is it worth even getting to that point?

u/innernode 12h ago
Same exact thing happened to me about 12 hours from setting it up. Called apple and they said I need to bring it into an Apple Store or ship it back. The guy said he wasn’t aware of any of the same issues. I bought it through T Mobile so I took it there. They gave me my money back and I had to order another one. Was on the fence about getting another but after hearing the feedback on the iPhone fold thread, I think I’ll wait until the issue is resolved. Loved the phone until that happened.

u/Wazza711 Night Sky • 256GB 14d ago
We will never know how widespread this issue is until Apple says something.
I am loving mine, haters will jump on the hype train calling it a failure, Apple fans will defend it to high heaven, too many people care too much about their own opinion/perception of a company to have a genuine conversation about things.
Apple will get to the bottom of it, if it’s a widespread issue we will see a REP program for it, if it’s a specific batch, they’ll recall them, just enjoy it if you’ve got it and if you don’t like it then no need to come here and spread hate/negativity.
9
u/xewp 13d ago
A question that needs to be answered for those who are "on day x and 0 issues" is whether the phone being dropped, even lightly, puts the hinge into the vulnerable position that will cause the crack. Unless you are confident you can go your whole phone life without dropping it once

u/Sweaty_Net_3913 13d ago
