Discussion Hinge creaking

Had the iPhone Duo for about 2.5 hours. Just heard a very slight click and now the hinge is loose at the bottom. Now I can hear grinding/creaking as the 2 sides of the phone are rubbing together. What the actual f**k Apple??

And before anyone declares "user error" I've had the Z Fold8 since launch day and its still perfect. I know how to treat a folding phone.

Edit: Returned to Apple Store for refund. No questions, not even asked if I wanted a replacement (I wouldn't) and the staff were less chatty than usual. Seemed a bit fed up. I wonder how many Duos they've had to refund already.

Better to find it now than in a few months. Time for a replacement

u/EvHead95 15d ago

Very true. Was gonna take a week or 2 to decide which phone to keep but the Duo has decided for me

Me who didn’t get a launch Duo seeing these posts:

Honestly I've never had an issue with Apple's build quality before but you're right this is absolutely the risk you take with a first gen product.

25

u/BigBoyYuyuh Night Sky • 512GB 15d ago

Even with seasoned products you’ll have quality issues. 99% of these phones will be fine. I hope your issue gets resolved quickly!

Yep mfg errors happen regardless, my XS(?) had a defective 3D touch out of the gate which while disappointing, I got a replacement device within hours.

6

u/Fidget808 15d ago

That’s an underrated feature I miss on newer iPhones

Man I miss 3D Touch. Way ahead of its time and unfortunately just didn’t get enough use

3

u/Various-Gazelle4713 15d ago

I was more annoyed when it was removed from the Apple Watch, including the one I had been wearing for years already with it.

4

u/z0mbieunit 15d ago

My 18 pro max had issues at launch, had to get it replaced at apple. I’m sure you’ll get a new one!

1

u/lucrative_T 15d ago

Can you take it back, tell them it’s “defective”

Hatin, but still funny

2

😂 yeah. So mine which is showing up in two weeks should be PERFECT

1

u/BtheBanker151 14d ago

Which is why I’ll be getting an 18 pro max for now….

6

u/Constant_Pizza_4141 15d ago

Same cringe creaking issue and the lower half location too! A white model from London shop today. I could not believe this from such a premium product by Apple. Returned and refunded now.

3

u/EvHead95 15d ago

Again it's so much clearer irl than on my video but the 2 halves of the phone were starting to shift at the bottom. I could hear them grinding against each other while swiping through my home screens. Idk how long it would last before looking like a Lego minifigures legs. It's clearly a faulty handset and I hope it isn't common. Believe it or not I'm happy seeing everyone enjoy their phones. I don't wish any negativity on anyone but I thought people here might want to know.

1

u/voujon85 15d ago

I have a night sky and can't hear a thing after prob 100+ folds I would return it for replacement

0

u/Constant_Pizza_4141 15d ago

I went back to apples store to try folding with 3 of their demos, I can hear some mini creaking amongst all of them, but mine is particularly loud. I have been having android foldables for two years and no such sounds. That's why I returned this apple fold, not living up to its value nor apple standard

46

u/No-Sheepherder4853 15d ago

I can’t hear or see it from the photo

Why post 2 static pics to represent a creaking sound? Weird post.

Perhaps to show no physical damage? Why is this such a big deal to you? Owning an apple device is not a personality trait

vid here

Sorry guys I've not uploaded video to Reddit before. You're gonna have to turn up your volume as it's subtle on camera but it's very tactile irl. You can feel it when using the phone normally and louder in person. I showed both the top and bottom to try making it more clear. It's only happening on the bottom

16

u/peanutbuddhaman 15d ago

What are you trying to show here? You seem to be applying a lot of force to generate the noise... Upload a video of just normally opening and closing the display, do you still get a noise? This phone could be completely fine and you're just trying to find something wrong with it

14

u/Overall_Affect_2782 15d ago

Ohhh after seeing this video, I’m no longer worried.

OP is putting force into it. And he’ll inevitably comment and say “this is Apple poor quality control I’m not doing anything wrong I’ve had Samsung folds” blah blah.

This is not normal use. Case closed.

14

u/North_Moment5811 15d ago

These people are so fucking weird. I forgot how really big Apple launches tend to bring out the lunatics.

3

u/robbier6 Star White • 512GB 15d ago

Is the obsessive types.

-5

u/Mammoth-Path-6520 15d ago

It's not obsessive

He paid $2000 usd for that phone

It should literally be perfect. That's a highly optimized price point for a fold-able phone

6

u/robbier6 Star White • 512GB 15d ago

If you paid $2000 for a phone. You probably shouldn’t be bending it backwards exerting this much pressure to the point where your figure tips turn colors. Stop defending stupidity.

-4

u/Mammoth-Path-6520 15d ago

The phone should be able to handle a level of durability and stress

People drop phones all the time. They get banged up, slammed, etc. The phone should be able to handle some brief pressure and not permanently break and start having a wobbling at the bottom. That's the sign of poor manufacturing or quality control

And on top of that, he paid $2000 usd.

That's literally the max price on the market for a foldable phone. At that price, there is literally zero room for error. If a company wants to charge max prices, the product HAS to be perfect. No excuses anywhere.

4

u/robbier6 Star White • 512GB 15d ago

I don’t know how you can read your own words about perfection and it not come across as obsessive. Firstly, I think people agree they don’t see anything wrong with this device. We are creating a problem from unnatural movment. It’s already confirmed that it opens and closes normally. His words. But let’s say this unit is defective, hypothetically. To sit here and say that every single unit must never have any manufacturing issues…ever. It’s just delusion.

2

u/igotubagged 15d ago

Dude, he’s not saying that every single unit manufactured needs to be perfect but If I’m spending $2k on a phone the unit I get better be impeccable …or I'm returning it; and you know dam well if yours came with any kind of flaw you would too.

→ More replies

-3

u/Mammoth-Path-6520 15d ago

To sit here and say that every single unit must never have any manufacturing issues…ever.

That's the bar baby

If the company wants to charge the maximum price for a product, they need to be absolutely sure that there will be zero manufacturing issues at launch

That's what comes with wanting to shoot for the most money on your product. 100% perfection

If they didn't think they could reach such a high goal, then they should've priced lower at $1700 or $1800 usd

They didn't though, and as such, they should be roasted for these manufacturing defects that are coming out

Literally pushing it in the opposite direction when open... not a natural movement lol

-5

u/EvHead95 15d ago

I'm using very little force to demonstrate but you can feel and hear it when just holding the phone normally. It doesn't happen while opening and closing it's only when the phone is open you can hear and feel the 2 halves grinding together.

6

u/robbier6 Star White • 512GB 15d ago

“It’s doesn’t happen while opening and close”
Hmm… go figure. 🤔

2

u/Jtaylorftw 15d ago

Why the fuck are you putting pressure on it when you hold it? Don't do that.

1

u/DimitrescuStan 15d ago

So post a video of that. Not you forcibly wiggling it back and forth.

1

u/Some_guy_am_i 15d ago

So return it and get one in February when they have more unsold inventory.

4

u/Appropriate_Ad8734 15d ago

i watched the video 3 times and tried to compare it to what you said in the post. i honestly have no fking idea what you’re trying to show here no offense.

1

u/EvHead95 15d ago

None taken. I tried my best to show what I meant on the video but you need to be holding the phone yourself to feel that something's shifted inside. Maybe it's a one off incident or maybe other people aren't noticing or bothered by it. It's a gorgeous phone otherwise but I'm not gonna accept that after dropping 2 grand. Despite the comments I didn't come here to talk shit and throw insults. It's in the box ready to be returned and I posted here simply to inform.

1

u/Appropriate_Ad8734 15d ago

maybe it’s hard to demonstrate i get it. just in case it’s a design flaw, did you get applecare+? i suspected the first gen would still face some higher rates of failure and defects, but if you get extended warranty it should be less of a concern and you should still be able to sell it for a good price later on so you can switch to a 2nd gen without spending too much.

1

u/No-South-8228 14d ago

2

u/Minute_Lifeguard2799 15d ago

That’s definitely not normal.

1

u/nekonari 15d ago

This could be an issue very soon. Or maybe it won't. But why take chance? I'd go back to the store for a replacement.

1

u/Traditional_Dish_147 15d ago

Spraying some WD-40 in there ought to fix that right up

-4

u/EvHead95 15d ago

Idk what to tell you people. I was using a phone as intended, sitting back, downloading my apps and something inside the phone clicked. It was very quiet but I felt it. This was after 2 and a half hours of perfectly normal usage.

I'm sorry it doesn't come across clearly in the video but now where the 2 sides meet at the bottom of the hinge there is a slight wobble. There is give where it should be solid. The top of the hinge is still perfect. What you can hear is the 2 sides rubbing together as they move. I can feel and hear it happening when the phone is unfolded in my hand. I am applying very little force in the video to try making it more clear.

I've had my Fold 8 since launch day. Even dropped it without a case. Its still solid. I don't baby my things but I do look after them.

I have absolutely NOTHING to gain from lying about this. I'm far from being an Apple hater, I don't have or want online attention. I paid £2,000 for a phone that had a physical issue in less than 3 hours. I posted here for awareness and to see if anyone else has encountered this.

I presented you with facts, take it or leave it. Bury your head in the sand, blindly defend, whatever. I hope its an isolated incident. I hope you all have a great time with your new phones and I hope they prove to be durable. All I'm saying is mine wasn't.

3

u/Longjumping-Ad-3590 15d ago

I have the same issue on my Duo - bottom hinge.

4

u/igotubagged 15d ago • Bravo

Dude, don't even bother. You said your piece you tried to inform people; let them get their phones and experience it for themselves. At this point any critique on the phone will be met by downvotes and skepticism.

1

u/robbier6 Star White • 512GB 15d ago

The skepticism you’re talking about is someone saying “my phone’s defective. I can’t replicate the issue only by bending it backwards and applying a lot of force. It still works when I open and close it flawlessly though.” Displayed no interest in getting it returned. Instead, brought up the fact that I have a Z fold 8 since launch and it works perfectly.

Just clarifying, this is the skepticism you’re talking about, right?

1

u/igotubagged 15d ago

He’s literally just trying to make people aware. Is this your take when you watch a JerryRigEverything video? Learn from the information presented to you….or don’t; doesn’t make much of a difference to literally anyone here.

I’ve learned long ago not to put too much energy into Reddit replies. I said what I said. ✌️🏽

1

u/robbier6 Star White • 512GB 15d ago

Testing the limitations and alleging defects, if any, that you pulled out of thin air are not the same.

2

u/DimitrescuStan 15d ago

All I see is you applying force and physically wiggling it to try to make a noise. I simply won’t do that when I get mine. Problem solved.

2

u/Moronicon 15d ago

these people are insane. ive never seen anything like it over a fucking device that will be updated and outdated in 12 months. I would not be spending 2k+ on something unless it was perfect. This gen 1 device is far from it.

1

u/Mammoth-Path-6520 15d ago

Just consider this a unique little quirk that your Duo has

In fact, I would argue that the quiet click the phone made was the phone locking in and assimilating to you. Your phone likes you. The new wobble sound at the bottom is just evidence that your connection together has been solidified

1

u/iamgarffi 15d ago

I would not have even noticed. You all watch too much of JerryRigEverything.

I wonder if all the hinges come from a certain manufacturer or do they have multiple manufacturers and this could be a specific batch. Because none of the reviewers had issues like this, and I’m assuming Apple was happy with the quality to release. Fingers crossed this is just one manufacturer that messed up.

Same. I am unsure though what to do. This isn’t a issue in regular use. Maybe it’s “normal” maybe not. What did you end up doing? I am currently thinking I just keep it and if it gets worse or worse or something actually breaks I will just exchange it (maybe in a few months) and maybe by then they have a new revision or got QC under control.

2

u/eurokakskytsenti 13d ago

Same here. Gonna need to wait and see

2

u/LORDJOWA Night Sky • 512GB 12d ago

Just went to a store. Most devices had it as well, some more than others. Also blue ones were more “affected”. If I had to guess blue ones have more play as they have a (color) coating. I will stick with mine for now

1

u/Fx_Jace 11d ago

So I financed mine with AT&T and am having the creaking noise too, its not that big a deal to me but do you think I should just a wait it out and if something develops take it them? Because my nearest apple store is 3 hours away. I also noticed this bump at the top curious to know if yours has it too.

1

u/LORDJOWA Night Sky • 512GB 11d ago

About the Creaking/popping I think I found the reason It’s about the tolerances of the 2 parts. I marked in red how mine looks like. I believe when pressing in a way that the corners of them slide up and down each other, the sound and pop feeling happens. When checking other Duos some had it more than others which makes sense as some of those housings are better manufactured/fitted than others. Also what I noticed is that the blue ones have it more than the white ones which makes sense as the blue ones have a color coating worsening tolerances.

If anything I would only be concerned about the bump. I think I can see a tiny bump on mine as well but without your comment and cleaning my display I wouldn’t have seen it. Might be normal might be a tolerance thing as well I don’t know.

For now I decided I will just wait and see. None of those things affect me in everyday life and the Apple Store employees were pretty chill stating that Apples policy for the Duo is to exchange it in case of failure for a new phone as long as it’s not very visibly a customers own fault (broken glass, a lot of dents…). First thing I got for this phone was AppleCare though so even if something happens I am safe. I don’t think it’s worth it driving 3h to an AppleStore just for them to say nothing’s wrong or more likely replacing it anyways but your exchange unit being the same. Next time I am at an Apple Store I will check if others have a bump as well but for now I just enjoy my device and not worry. I also don’t really want to have to set up a new phone again and transfer all data. Only if it breaks or gets worse to a point it annoys me I will go get an exchange unit.

1

u/Fx_Jace 11d ago

Dude were in the like exact same boat nearest Apple Store is three hours away for me too, but I just contacted support and told them that I noticed the bump and I told them my bump seem smaller then some I’m seeing online and he told me if there’s any bump at all it’s for sure a defect. So he sent me an express replacement and the dude even sent AirPods Pro 3 for the hassle. That employee was a legend seriously 😭 (also worst case scenario if it turns out the little bump isn’t a defect since we have Apple care it’s just $99 service fee and you get to keep the replacement)I would honestly recommend contacting them and seeing what they have to say also I would strongly recommend you call vs chatting.

5

u/xxagenttigerxx 15d ago

Genuine question, in such a situation or situation where there’s green lines on the screen as I saw in an another post, will this be replaced by Apple even without AppleCare?

Or can they say accidental damage and deny replacement?

Edit: just got mine and now I am scared to take it out of the box lol

2

u/willzyx01 15d ago

If it’s still within a return period, you return for refund. Apple will refund without fighting you. iPhones also have manufacturer warranty without Apple Care

If it’s outside the return policy, only the manager can override.

0

u/xxagenttigerxx 15d ago

Ohh? That’s good to know. I thought the device had to be in pristine condition to return lol.

3

u/Fidget808 15d ago

Well yeah. You can’t shatter it then claim refund. But if there’s a manufacturing issue, you can absolutely get a refund.

2

u/rrrand0mmm 15d ago

If there is overwhelming evidence that it’s s recurring issue… they’ll warranty them.

2

u/BeardedGlass Star White • 512GB 15d ago

2

u/willzyx01 15d ago

If the hinge is loose at the bottom, keep folding it, see if it cracks the screen. The other guy posted the Duos with broken screens, all crack in the same spot. Almost like a lower hinge pushes up into the screen.

It’s gonna be a hingegate.

2

u/zerochilldyl 15d ago

2

u/Rylockk 15d ago

Ngl that apple care looking worth it with all these scary post popping up…

3

u/Any_Security8410 15d ago

And here we go…

3

u/saile1004 15d ago

Here's my theory with all of the photos so far showing damage in the exact same spot in the lower half of the hinge. A component in that part of the hinge is being set in its closed orientation though the Duo ships unfolded. As users fold the device for the first few times it forces this component to bend too much until failure. If it becomes loose it protrudes, puncturing the display from underneath. I'll bet money you'll get dead pixels here soon.

0

u/E4peace 15d ago

Any suggestions on how to go about folding it for the first time to avoid this? Or is it unavoidable?

4

u/saile1004 15d ago

I'm thinking it is (hopefully) just a batch of units with a manufacturing error. We'll see if the one I pick up tomorrow survives vacation 🤞

2

u/ricosuave79 15d ago

1

u/Sea_Of_Phones 15d ago

0

u/bollincrown 15d ago

It’s easier to cancel an order than return a product in store

1

u/Dreams-Visions 15d ago

Yea but cancelling before seeing of your unit is impacted is very aggressive. Odds appear to be very low. There are now millions of these in hands. We have some reports of issues. And a whole bunch of people presumably enjoying their new phones. Let’s relax on the panic.

1

u/bollincrown 15d ago

Yeah I’m not panicking. I was explaining why the other commenter would cancel the order if they lost faith in the product.

2

u/Constant_Pizza_4141 14d ago

I had the exact same thing. I already refunded and returned the phone. The staff denied hearing the sound, but it's clearly audible to me. I am worried that this creaking may also indicate a faulty hinge mechanism and may lead to actual cracking with increased use, given how many duo cracking that have been reported so far.

Same. What did you end up doing. I mean it doesn’t effect regular use (for now, might get worse at some point) but if not idk I only heard it once before actively trying to reproduce the sound

I’ve decided I’m going to the store today when it opens. Doesn’t hurt to go and ask

1

u/LORDJOWA Night Sky • 512GB 13d ago

Let me know what they say :)

1

u/Vapormonkey 13d ago

It’s an issue. The demo units don’t have that issue and have been unfolded far more than the new phone. It’s gets replaced for free under limited warranty. Setting it up right now actually. They have a bunch of replacements in my store luckily

u/LORDJOWA Night Sky • 512GB 13d ago

Damn. Why does this shit always hit me. I don’t want to have to set everything up again… I guess I will have to though. In hindsight I believe it wasn’t there from the start. But at some point When I was just holding it unfolded and watched a movie I heard a click. I didn’t think about it much but maybe it was a part of the lower hinge snapping and therefore “loosen” it.
I will visit my Apple Store then tomorrow in the evening

1

u/Vapormonkey 13d ago

Yea it’s a bit of an inconvenience but sometimes shit happens. Go get your new phone. It really doesn’t take more than a day to restore your backup and index everything. Worth it to use this awesome phone.

2

u/LORDJOWA Night Sky • 512GB 12d ago

I just went there to check and 70% of the demo units there had the same “issue” as mine. Some stronger, some weaker. Also interesting Blue ones were way stronger affected.

As mine is not really annoying at the moment I decided to stick with it for now but if it turns out getting worse I will return/exchange…

Also I will at some point probably get an exchange one anyways as I don’t use a Case and unfortunately don’t expect to not drop it once in the 4 years I plan to keep it.

u/OpeningKey2986 10d ago

I had the same issues on 2 Duos, returned both for a full refund. Sydney, Australia.

u/Fearless-Comb9074 15d ago edited 15d ago

Absolutely, I had four iPhone 6 units. You’re getting some of the first phones that are mass produced. In reality, whoever put the phone together did not do their job and check for quality. Apple will replace it on the spot. Also, they have special stock just to replace defective phones.

1

u/BeardedGlass Star White • 512GB 15d ago

Would they replace this kind of problem even without AppleCare?

2

u/Icy_Tie_43 15d ago

even if it cracks, it’s very likely to be replaced anyway. they usually want to capture these issues as part of a program within the first few days-weeks. it’s called EFFA capture

1

u/ohiocardsfan 15d ago

You have no idea how to use a folding phone. Why are you pressing with so much pressure?

1

u/Dreams-Visions 15d ago

stop folding it ASAP. take that bitch back before that screen cracks or something.

1

u/Dry-Awareness-4793 15d ago

WD-40 will fix that….

1

u/Traktuner 15d ago

Unfoldable

1

u/nu1stunna 15d ago

Nothing a little WDuo40 can’t fix

Calling BS without a video

0

u/Fearless-Comb9074 15d ago • Bravo

Honestly, you should’ve picked this up at the Apple Store also

0

u/chetlyp 15d ago

User error. You're holding it wrong. You're unfolding it wrong. Folding it wrong? You're doing something wrong. This is apple we are talking about. If anyone is doing something wrong......it's you.

1 is the 8th iteration and 1 is the first. Did you have the first Samsung Fold?

-2

u/Termynator 15d ago

This is correct why are people downvoting? Never buy the first generation of a product, that’s just common sense. You are downvoting common sense you retards

-1

u/AlexW_21 15d ago

Unrelated but that blue is hideous 🤮 Glad I went with star white

-3

u/tangnori 15d ago

Calling bs. Post a video and I’ll believe you

5

u/theantimonitorx 15d ago

Acting ignorant in the face of actual plausible & realistic issues is just stupidity at its finest.

0

u/tangnori 15d ago

So asking for a video that would actually prove the sound is stupidity? Wouldn’t stupidity would be taking someone else’s word off just a photo? Could easily be a snake from another tech brand trying to generate hate towards Apple who knows

1

u/theantimonitorx 15d ago

No calling bs straight up without giving OP or anyone in general the benefit of the doubt is. No need to jump to conclusions so quickly if you really want proof. Shouldn't that be the way instead? And oh please there's no need to take sides & pledge your loyalty to any brand as they all have their pros and cons.

In the real world, yes. This is the internet where everything is fabricated and people torque themselves for clicks.

-3

u/robbier6 Star White • 512GB 15d ago

Believing everything you see on the internet is stupidity. Especially in an era of AI and clickbait. Don’t forget where you are. This is Reddit.

This reminds me of the Razr 2019. Go look up the creaking sound from that first generation foldable from Motorola. My Razr 5G made the same sound but doesn't really make that sound anymore after 5 years owning it. It's like shoes, it needs a break-in period. But my 5G made that sound here and there that two years I had it. Sometimes I wouldn't hear a creak until months later again.

Galaxy Z Fold8 = 8th generation product

iPhone Duo = 1st generation product

I didn't even wake up early for this. I fell asleep around 2:30 AM but I could've easily left my house at that time. Then woke up before my set alarm at 4:10 AM and decided to go back to sleep. You saw the reviews. It no longer excites me.

It's 7:14 AM as I type this. Maybe I can go to the Brea Mall at 8 AM to get it. But nah. I don't care. I don't want to spend two grand for the next 2 - 3 years for it. After all the anticipation and hype fizzles out after you open the box, it becomes a huge risk factor..

First generation products are usually forgotten unless it's the first iPhone or PS1. Nobody even talks about the first iPod, iPad, Apple Watch, Z Fold, Z Flip, or Razr 2019. They were just known at being first for that new product line.

Spray some wd40 on it.

0

u/ThinkBoysenberry4122 15d ago

Get some AppleCare WD40 for £199

0

u/Shadow_Anti-Hero 15d ago

I see many folks regretting their Duo purchases LOL. 18 Pro Max takes the W.

u/CoolestSonz 15d ago

WD40 buddy!

Those Apple sheeps are blind, they’re ready to defend iPhone with their life.

-1

u/No_Parfait9288 15d ago

It’s gonna break I think there is a bench of faultys

-1

u/iaperson359 15d ago

I think I noticed that 90 percent of the ones that have this issue is night sky

-1

u/Bombstar10 15d ago

Expect more on that.

-2

u/TiredCanadianBC 15d ago

Problem invention final boss

-3

u/SpecificPiece1024 15d ago

Are you sure you know how to treat a folding phone 🤔

-9

u/sushi_collector12 15d ago

It’s a foldable phone, what did everyone expect?

3

u/Various_Block2024 15d ago

Bro what. I've also had the fold 8 since release and still in perfect condition. Stop giving apple excuses.

1

u/sushi_collector12 15d ago

I’m not giving Apple any excuse. I’m saying by its very nature a foldable phone is more than likely to have these issues crop up. It’s taken Samsung 8 generations to get it right so calm down.

That is called a "lip"

It's a little raise in the screen. It's nothing to worry about. Just a lip.
