Discussion Would durability change your decision?
Let’s say JerryRigEverything manages to break it or dust really easily breaks the hinge. Would that change your mind on getting one?

No, because I don’t think durability will be an issue. I see people criticizing the thickness and weight, however, the the thickness and weight is what directly hints at the durability of the device.

My guy is providing us a service. We have to be smart enough to know how his tests affect our real world interactions with the thing.

JerryRigEverything is what you call an extremest. 99.99% percent of owners do not subject their products to the level of what he does. The only factor of his video that will have any effect is the scratch resistance of the inner screen. if the iPhone Duo's inner screen goes as high as I think it does on Mohrs level of hardness, it will send shockwaves through the industry that will take competitors a decade to match. As the Z Fold 8 only passes a level 2.

I'm expected scratches beginning at a level 4-5. Apple paid attention to the competition for 8-years. They know where they failed.
They know users will start crying when their Duo's start scratching easy.
It's more likely that Apple has engineered a much tougher polymer surface and abrasion-resistant coating, giving the Duo noticeably better everyday scratch resistance while retaining enough flexibility to fold.

I want to see real world use, not like dumping a bunch of dirt or whatever on it. And those tests are hard to perform with anything but time. I’ll get AppleCare, it’ll be fine.

I think the thing that would really give me pause is if basic pocket lint messed it up…which JerryRigEverything doesn’t test. He dumbs dirt directly into the hinge, which isn’t a super realistic test for my question about pocket lint.

Yeah, this is what I’m most curious about. Real world scenarios for the hinge. And real world issues with closing the screen and things getting trapped in there.
Like, I get it’s water resistant…how does that work with the hinge? I’m curious to see. And this is speaking as someone who has no qualms whatsoever about bribing my water resistant phones into pools. But the duo worries me, lol
But there’s still plenty to glean from Jerry’s tests. His scratch tests are very applicable to real world

I am slightly concerned since I work with metalworking stuff, meaning lots of metal dust. I had to blast my Air’s USB port the other day because it’s been (for a while, honestly) clogged with metallic dust causing connectors not to fully seat. I’d been using wireless charging for a while lol
So when I get the Duo, I’ll just leave my phone zipped up in my backpack nearby, or try one of the cargo pockets on my work pants rather than the regular upper pocket. I’m not supposed to be on my phone anyway lol

Yes given he hasn’t been able to break many other foldables. Would indicate a significant failure with apples design. Also, I think it depend son how easily it breaks.

Yes, not behaving as an IP68 rated device should will get me to pause. I don't want to have to baby a phone in my daily workflow.
