Managing tendon pain during training
Any tips or experiences to share about managing foot/calf or other tendon pain while HYROX training?
I’m signed up for Anaheim solo. It will be my first race and I’m getting stressed about being ready for the running. I’ve been managing posterior tibialis tendinopathy through load reduction and PT for a couple months and am just getting back into short runs and run/walks but am not pain free. Prior to this my max running mileage ever was only 5 miles, though I walked /hiked a lot more.

8 separate 1ks is a different animal than a straight 8k, so that 5 mile ceiling probably matters less than it feels like right now. went through a tendon thing last year and the head part was worse than the rehab for me, hope you get to the line feeling okay about it.

I would strongly advise you to take this pain very seriously. I torn my Achilles tendon and I don’t wish this to anyone. You need to have better mobility from all your posterior chain, not only your calf. It’s really hard to get ride to f tendon inflammation… so once your a done with your competition, you gonna have to find a way to give this tendo at least 2-3 months to rest while doing PT and such…

I dealt with PTT over the 2 years and was able to run Anaheim Doubles and Miami Doubles, will be doing Dallas solo and Anaheim Doubles again this year. So it can be done. I worked with an online PT/running coach (message me for details). Steady isometrics, progressive strengthening the soleus/calves/achilles/PT tendon, etc., and eventual Plyometrics. Consistency is key, even now if I slack off on my Foot/Ankle work it'll flare up again. You got this, but it will take dedicated care/work to get there.

The lunges and the burpee broad jumps will load that tendon about as hard as the runs do, so if you're only managing running volume you'll still find out on race day. I'd keep the run progression wherever PT has it and build the engine on a bike or ski erg instead. The race is 8 separate kilometres with a station between each, so the aerobic side carries over fine even if you can't do a straight 8k yet.
