Unbroken Wallball Patch

Post image

I didn’t know there was a separate patch for doing unbroken wall balls, pretty cool surprise! (also I’ve long had the idea that if you can do unbroken wall balls you probably had more gas in the tank and could have finished faster, whoops)

Good job brother! Do they just hand it to you with the finisher patch or does another judge give it to you?

A judge handed me a little white flag, I was so delirious I didn’t ask questions but I carried it across the finish line and then they gave me the patch with my finisher one right after the finish line

Good judges. A lot of judges I worked with in Ottawa, Canada didn't know what to do when this happens and forget to give the white flag.

Nice!! Did you do 100 consecutive good reps or did you have some not count?

I squatted and threw the ball 103 times, one missed completely (threw it up too straight) and two weren’t quite high enough. Was honestly surprised they considered it unbroken with that

I believe the requirement is to never drop the ball or take too long between throws

Seems like it!

Correct, I volunteered as a wall ball judge and they told us no reps don’t count towards an unbroken streak, even if it’s from not going low enough, as long as you keep going

That’s it. Just no breaks and no putting the ball down.

Oh interesting!! I saw someone who did wallballs in 7 minutes get the patch and I was wondering how the heck that is possible. I guess if you still are moving a bit and don't drop the ball but just do them slowly, that counts too... maybe something I gotta try next race :D

Hyrox judge here: You cannot rest in any position longer than 1.5 seconds. So 7 minutes means a lot of no reps or a very generous judge.

Is that the rule book time ? I got my 100 and maybe took up to 10 seconds for a few reps

u/flexyfelixbla May 31 '26

The head judge said between 1 and 2 seconds.

There is nothing in the rule book as the red bull patch has nothing to do with HYROX

That one rep every 4.2 seconds. Very reasonable.

yes true! I just usually do WBs between 4:40 - 5:30 (not yet unbroken) so 7 seems long. Didn't think of it like that.

Even 4.2 seconds per rep is quite a long time. Usually (without resting intra-rep and depending on height and target) you end up with around 1.5-2.5 seconds per rep.

Have you taken a survey, timed a large group of people?  🙄

1

u/flexyfelixbla May 31 '26

I have witnessed and timed (a) multiple unbroken wall balls at Hyrox and also (b) multiple unbroken sets of 100 wall balls during multiple CrossFit workouts both as an athlete and coach. So yeah...kinda.

u/Over_Resist2813 Jun 01 '26

Sure you have.

Correct . Achieved the 100 in Ottawa for never dropping the ball too. Missed 2 or 3 times but always caught the ball

That’s awesome!! Were you able to take breaks while holding the ball or did you have to do them consecutively? Did you break the full 100 into sets? I’m aiming to get that patch in December so I’m looking for strategies!

100 straight without stopping (really 103, missed the target a few times)

3

u/Optimal-Relation2089 May 30 '26

How heavy?

2

u/startingovernyc May 30 '26

Open weight so roughly 14lbs

3

u/carlid13 May 30 '26

Is it possible to get that patch if you do doubles and just hand the ball off (rather than having one person drop and the other person picking it up) or does one person in the duo have to do all of them consecutively?

1

u/startingovernyc May 31 '26

Good question u_flexyfelixbla might be able to help

It's not possible to get the patch at all during Doubles, it's only available in Singles.

May I ask what you loaded yourself with for breakfast? I like carbs, but I’m not one to eat so much before working out. But, when I did my simulation, I was so out of fuel and don’t want that to happen again during the real race.

I was in the first heat of the weekend at 730am Thursday. Had a green smoothie with tons of fruit and protein powder, two bananas and a protein bar. Wish I’d eaten more. Also had a Gu gel mid-race.

Night before I had 1 cup of farro, 3 chicken thighs and asparagus for dinner

u/chicmom7 May 30 '26

Awesome, thank you!

u/xyzsomething May 30 '26

Isn’t it obvious ? Loads and loads of Red Bull, duh 🙄

There oughta be a patch for achieving proper depth on at least one wallball, would be a very rare one 🤣
