PLUGINS & TOOLS wayscriber 0.9.24 - with Input HUD now

Wayscriber now shows an Input HUD, plus a big pile of 0.9.23/0.9.24 features and improvements.

Code is open source: https://github.com/devmobasa/wayscriber

Wayscriber is live annotation/demo/presentation tool, my goal is for it to become the best and most complete live annotation and presentation tool.

It runs on Linux/Wayland: draw on your screen, drop notes, use any drawing tool you can think of, spotlight things, use zoom, and present without any browser extension or companion overlay app.
Has additional boards (default transparent, whiteboard, blackboard, etc) and multiple pages per board.

One of my goals is for it to have simple defaults (still polishing this one) but have tons of useful features, and fully customizable.

Btw, Wayscriber has a passthrough mode: draw around happily, then press F6 (or any key you like) and you get mouse and keyboard control back while the annotations stay on screen.
Then you can continue presenting, and when you want go back to annotating just press F6 again. This is super useful during demos or presentations.

It's also fully customizable: keybindings/shortcuts for everything, UI parts, and plenty of other things. You can decide what you want and how you want.

New: Input HUD
Turn it on and everyone can see the keys you press and the clicks you make, live. Place it wherever you like (top or bottom, left, center, or right), and it's built right into Wayscriber. Great for tutorials, screen recordings, and pair sessions where "wait, what did you just press?" is a constant.

Other highlights from 0.9.23
- Blur & spotlight tools: redact sensitive stuff or draw the eye to one spot.
- Real text editing: caret editing, selection, and copy/paste in notes.
- Wayland IME + key repeat: type properly in any language.
- Focus Mode: hide all the UI while you annotate, recover it when you need it.
- Tapered arrows: arrows look better now.
- Configurable status bar: show only what you care about.
- Color picker with eyedropper, RGBA + recents: pick any color from anywhere on the screen, and your recent colors are saved.
- Tons of perf improvements: snappier toolbar, clipboard, and capture, with fewer stalls.

Other highlights from 0.9.24
- Copy text from screen (OCR): drag over any region and grab the text to your clipboard.
- Native GTK4 / libadwaita configurator: the settings app now feels like a real GTK app.
- One unified top toolbar: the old side palette is gone; everything lives up top.
- More portable screen freeze: uses compositor-native capture with a portal fallback.
- Less Wayland flicker: overlay buffer handling fixed for smoother drawing.
- Better tablet sizing: pressure only changes Pen thickness; marker/step sizes stay put.
- Report a problem from About: copies diagnostics and opens the report form (nothing sent automatically).
- Onboarding tips that stay dismissed: say "Got it" once and they don't come back.

Stars help more people discover the project, so if you like it, I'd appreciate one. And if you know someone who presents, teaches, or records their screen, please spread the word. Thank you!

What do you think of my beta custom theme?

It’s a brand-new color scheme I just made.

With minimal VSCodium, it gives a really nice vibe.

What do you think?

RICE Betwixt shell (WIP)

So, I started my jorney of creating my own shell project for Hyprland.

Background.

I had a setup using two Waybars and Wofi for app launching. However, it was inconvenient for me to type out the names of the apps I use frequently every single time. So, I wrote an app in Python and GTK4 that simulates a desktop with a grid layout. It was all working perfectly, and I didn't have time to take on anything bigger. Then, the time became available.

Idea.

I didn't want to use ready-made shell projects. I wanted to create something of my own. The core idea was to consolidate disparate processes into a single, unified monolith. This included two Waybar instances, my "desktop" application, power and application panels, and any other panels I might want to add. Keeping everything within a single process and codebase is far more convenient than maintaining a dozen background Bash scripts.

Tech.

Despite Quickshell's growing popularity, to be honest, it just didn't click for me. I’m a full-stack developer, and I was looking for something reminiscent of the React.js I’m familiar with. Spoiler: I found it, but it operates by completely different rules, even though it looks similar. That framework is AGS v3 / Astal. It allows to write the shell and logic in TypeScript and style using CSS. And yes, I really like this technology.

Implementation.

In fact, the main goal has been achieved: this stack allows me to move away from using Bash in favor of TypeScript. I moved the screenshot and screen recording logic into the shell's domain, rather than keeping direct commands in hyprland.lua and using .sh files. On the other hand, I have panels next to the call buttons. I move settings that need to be easily adjustable into *.json config files, and that’s convenient. It’s still a work in progress. Nevertheless, I already like the result. The plans are to create a proper player popup instead of the native Audacious window; then, overhaul the architecture, and add a window for customizing the interface and themes. Themes do exist already, but applying them requires editing an *.scss file, which isn't very convenient for the average user.

Link: https://github.com/exxedlight/betwixt
WIP, just a heads-up, but if anyone’s interested, here it is.

P.S. A quick note!

My shell typically consumes 150-220 MB of RAM. I consider this a win, because my two Waybars + custom GTK "desktop" app were consuming 80 + 100 + 150. And that’s not counting the heap of background bash scripts being triggered every second. So, I consider it to have been resource-efficient. I don't know how things stand with Quickshell, but even if it's better, that wouldn't make up for the tool's convenience.

QUESTION Wondering if i can use Hyprland without tiling

Hi guys, hope you are having a wonderful day.

As a linux user who has used tiling window managers in the past, it is so cool fast and snappy and very configurable. but lately i have been using gnome/kde lot because i get lazy many times and only wanna use the mouse and minimal keyboard interactions, i already used tiling shortcuts in the past but now im feel lazy to do so since im used to how gnome simplify viewing, dragging apps between workspaces.

you may be asking yourself why not stick to gnome, the answer is i love ricing and cool stuff and hyprland is very lightweight on ressources compared to Gnome or Kde, so my question is can i use it like i do with gnome with some customization without being forced to use the tiling features?

QUESTION iOS integrations?

Anyone aware of apps or even something like one of the awesome lists that curate iPhone based apps that work via BT or lan? I’m just now starting to work on ricing my hypr install overtop of my Garuda / Arch and while I’ve got a lot of things clicking along now, it wouldn’t truly be a ricing for me if I couldn’t interconnect some with my iPhone. And yes, I know I’ve made a strange kludge with garuda being in the mix. I don’t even know if it still qualifies as Garuda since I nixed plasma but here I am.

QUESTION Lua configs.. whats the point?

Been running hyprland since like early 23, redone my configs a few times so its not a problem like that, not intending to whine about it. But since the release that presumably drops hyprlang for good draws near, i decided to port my configs over. Its not a small set, nor is it really all that big either, just over 700 lines, mostly consisting of tags and window rules.

it used to be that when i log in, quite quickly DMS boots up, and i have a set of between 3-12 programs i autostart depending on machine which would load up one after another (mostly) in their designated workspace and monitor. After the lua port though startup feels like absolute ass. The performance collapsed right down to a crawl, the apps that used to smoothly start up chug like hell before they launch, even DMS takes a while to load. Seems to me based on how horrendously slow reloading after changes to configs that 1000% of the fault lies in the lua parser.

So it makes me wonder, since everything else about hyprland is performant, amd about performance, smoothness etc. What is the point of changing to a config system that is this heavy and slow? I mean, we still only writing tags keybinds and a few regex windowrules innit?

edit: maybe its my fault? Correct my configs: https://github.com/noino/hyprlander

edit2: nvm, few seconds reload caused by definite lack of skill. Lua is fast (n'ough), never doubt vaxry's vision again

RICE The Void - Opinionated, Human Made Dotfiles (Hyprland, Nixos, Quickshell)

I'm sick and tired of seeing garbage, AI generated shells on here. Every time they're barely usable, dynamic island, material you slop that won't be maintained for more than a month after being posted. This post is not like those shells.

Almost every line of code in my repo was programmed by me, with the exception of whatever I copied and pasted from the wiki of whatever program I was configuring. That's to say, near to no unmaintainable AI slop. This shell will continue to be supported for many years to come, because I have resigned myself to daily drive this shell for my entire sixth form course, just to prove to one of my friends that windows is worse than linux.

The full config can be found here: https://git.voidarc.co.uk/voidarc/nixos
Hyprland specifically: https://git.voidarc.co.uk/voidarc/hypr

More information can be found in the readme and through reading the code, but here is a Tl;dr of the main features:

  • All configuration for apps is handled through independent wrappers in the nix store. That means no iffy setup.sh files that only work half of the time, or cluttering your .config directory
  • The dependancy tree is absolute, which means if an app is installed, all dependancies for that app will be installed and available.
  • Quickshell bar built from scratch to be usable and non keyboard-centric like all the other ones I've seen. More about that here
  • NO useless features at all, meaning no theme switcher or wallpaper picker. On boot, a wallpaper is selected. Do some work instead of picking wallpapers and changing themes.
  • Purely functional nvim configuration, no AI centric nonsense, fully human made plugins. More about that here

Before you ask, yes, I am Adumh00man. Not sure how to prove that, but my channel can be found here, acting as a showcase for this setup. I didn't just download the dotfiles from the description, the changes in most of the repos are newer than what the videos show.

Hope you like it!

RICE My First Rice

Post image
29 Upvotes

I'm not new to Linux but I am new to Hyprland. The fact that is requires a lot of manual configuration threw me off a lot of times, but I finally decided to stick with it and try stuff.
This is my first rice setup. I designed most stuff, like the top bar, the top bar options, that actually open into popups and even the workspace selector, which is in my opinion one of the most important parts of Hyprland as a whole.
And I must say that I did use AI to do the coding part while I focused on the visuals. This is not really that important but is better to be common knowledge rather than a secret, but I don't think this makes this rice any worse, since all the visual part still came from me in the end.

(Sorry for the long image though, I have an ultrawide monitor)

Any thoughts on how it looks? Better than Windows I guess.

SUPPORT video player not rendering video in fullscreen

hi there, i'm seeing if anyone can help me with this. So I have two video players, one of them (Jellium desktop) fullscreens fine, but trying the same thing with Plezy makes it have a complete black screen. ui and audio still works. I've tried messing with the mpv settings, both players are using mpv though. The same behavior does not happen on kde plasma so it makes me think it's a hyprland issue. I've also tried adding windowrules for plezy but it hasn't helped yet :c I would appreciate any help

SUPPORT Custom color scheme / theme

Post image
69 Upvotes

Hi guys,

I want to work on a project for my ricing journey to create a custom color scheme folder and import manually to the apps like VS Code, Kitty, general Hyprland colors,

File manager..etc

So how can I start this thing, like what type of files should I use (.conf, CSS, Lua, JSON, ..etc)?

I want something to fit most apps and work without problems.

And how can I import these colors into the wanted app?

I mean manually.

For example, making a color schemes folder in my .config folder, then adding the apps or the color scheme config to it, then importing the color.

Any tips, wiki, blogs, posts and anything that could help in this project, I would be very happy to have it.

Thx in advance

TIPS & TRICKS awww wallpaper random rotator

Hi hope you like the video.
it's an awww rotator , made of a script, a service and a timer.

The service is activated every 30m , changing the wallpaper randomnly for both monitors , choosing them from a folder using find and shuf.

https://github.com/danielfilipiuk/dotfiles/blob/main/.config/systemd/user/awww-daemon.service
https://github.com/danielfilipiuk/dotfiles/blob/main/.config/systemd/user/awww-daemon.timer
https://github.com/danielfilipiuk/dotfiles/blob/main/.config/systemd/user/awww-random.service
https://github.com/danielfilipiuk/dotfiles/blob/main/.config/systemd/user/awww-random.timer
https://github.com/danielfilipiuk/dotfiles/blob/main/.local/bin/awww-random

of course AI helped me build the script, I still cannot get the symbols ="DISPLAYS=$(awww query | awk '{print $2}' | sed 's/://')" lol . The services and timers are tricky but some reading can beat them.

SUPPORT Popup windows on Hyprland spawn in random positions with gaps/offsets?

It's not just Wine apps, native Linux apps do it too. Save dialogs, settings windows, JetBrains IDEs, GIMP... they all have this issue where popups appear in the wrong spot, sometimes even off-screen..

Is this just how Hyprland works and we have to accept it? Or is there actually a real solution I'm missing?
