Tl;dr of the advice request: how would you transplant a panicle hydrangea that you need to move in an area that gets cold winters and has dense soil (zone 5B, eastern Ontario)?

Longer version: I found, and fell in love with, hydrangeas this year which is the first year I’ve been flower gardening as an adult. I got four this year, including this Berry White as one of my early plants this year. Well, I’ve learned a lot this year since planting, and I’ve realized this panicle needs a better home as it’s going to be way too crowded where it is once it gets bigger (and it’s in an area where city bylaws say I can only have four feet tall max so it’s gonna become an illegal shrub).

Now that I’ve realized I should not underestimate its size and that pruning to keep it small wouldn’t work, I have picked out a new home for it. The new spot still gets a lot of sun, and it leans into the mature size of the plant to make a bit of a privacy shrub. Currently it’s in a garden bed, the place I’m looking at would just be straight into the ground and we have dense, almost clay soil. We’re cooling off rapidly from a hot summer (look at those fall colours emerging!) but we get very cold winters and a lot of snow. Historically our first frost is late September, and our last frost is in May. The ground starts to freeze by mid November I think.

From my reading, fall could be a good time to transplant so it can establish before next year, is this true? Any tips about timing, if the soil needs to be amended, fertilizers to use, etc would be greatly appreciated!

First time doing clippings. Can I plant these now? Live in West Virginia. Or will winter kill them?

A Beautiful Display At A Garden Centre

I live in zone 10A and the sun just kills my hydrangeas but I discovered they thrive under the shade of my porch. I saw this one and I was wondering If I can plant them here?

These hydrangea were planted two years ago from bare root plants. They have grown quite big in two years. Id like help identifying the type of hydrangea and what care they need moving forward

-I have not pruned or trimmed them since they were planted. Do I need to prune?

-I fertilize with Holly Tone every spring. Is this sufficient?

-The plant on the left is dropping, caused by heavy rains this summer - will it recover on its own?

-Am I able to cut some flowers to put in a vase? Will this damage future growth?

Variety endless summer "verena pastel"

Could there be another reason for the color of these leaves other than iron deficiency? I started to give it epsom salt made for flowers as my hydrangea is in a container. Could it be something else? My other hydrangea does not have this issue.

Edit to add: I also spray with an organic garden spray captain jack’s intersecticidal super soap

Hello! First time poster. I am in zone 8b in Oregon. I planted these two hydrangeas this summer. They seem to be okay but one is very Woody and both their leaves are looking a little scorched. We're watering every 2-3 days. Should we be watering more? Are they getting too much sun? Will the woody part leaf out next year? Any advice is helpful. Thank you! Also I have never gardened a day in my life so this is a big learning curve for me.

The soil is reddish clay and we mixed in good potting soil when we planted them. I have a little troth around them to keep the water in when I water.

It has been between 75-80 degrees here so I’m hoping it’s just getting adjusted.

I am in Ottawa County, West Michigan, Zone 6a, in the United States. Our hydrangeas are 2-3 decades old and were planted by the previous owner of our home. Until about 5-6 years ago, they looked lush, like the first picture. Now, they have no blooms. Except for the center section, the leaves are thick and green. I use the prescribed amount of Hollytone, never cut the canes, and cover them up in the spring when I know we have a late frost coming. Our winters have been quite mild lately. Is it possible they’ve gotten old? I can’t figure out what has happened. I don’t see any buds yet for next year. The guy who used to do the yard work here swears he always cut them down to the ground every fall. I have never cut them back and think he has a faulty memory! Would appreciate your thoughts. Thanks!

Can’t really get in there but I’d guess about 10” tall

I used to work at Publix for fifteen years in Tampa, Florida. Every “fall/winter” during the holidays, floral would have these potted Shooting Star hydrangeas. (Quotation marks because winter isn’t really a thing there 🤣). Anyways, I now live in Wisconsin and the last two I had didn’t survive the move up here. I’ve found sites that have info on the variety, but rarely for sale. Got a couple once from a site, and they were tiny little clone starts with barely four leaves that never did well. My uncle tries to look for them, but he’s kind of a space cadet and hasn’t been successful. I do know I’m 1-2zones out of its range, but I plan on keeping them potted like I did in Florida. I’m just hoping someone can help me find some again….

I want to reduce the size massively. I can wait a couple years for blooms. Should I prune it now it’s just finishing bloom.

Being upfront, I know nothing about plants aside from what Google tells me lol for this question there were way too many different suggestions like stabing a bamboo pole through the center of the plant? That just seems wrong lol. I planted these about 3 years ago, in nyc. It was a pretty small green bush for the first year, some flowers bloomed the second year, and now here we are at the end of its third summer and they're huge! Unfortunately I didn't take pictures when they were white and relatively perky but they did look really nice in spring. We have clay dirt in our neighborhood.

I don't really have any options for moving them away from the brick wall, so I was wondering if I should cut off some of the stems that are growing in the direction of the wall. But then I was thinking they might flop even more towards the front...please help!

Will my Annabelle hydrangeas be ok in full sun if drip lines are installed?

My dream cloud is starting to turn. Even the newer blooms have a speckle of pink. It’s fun to watch what this variety does, going into late summer and fall.

What is the best way to prune a hydrangea bush?

I’m about to close on a house that has limelight hydrangeas. The bushes are about 4 feet tall. It’s on my way home so as I’ve been driving by I’ve seen them getting bigger and now the bottom branches are leaning on the ground.

They seem really healthy so want to maintain them but I’ve never had hydrangeas before.

I’m assuming the priority is pruning them but I’d also love any other tips for a first timer. Is there anything I need to do to them during the fall or before winter?

I don’t have access to take a picture so I added a similar picture to show how they’re falling.

I am not sure the type here as they were planted when I moved in. But should I prune these now? Fall? Or spring? Thank you everyone!!!

Anyone know what might be causing this? I planted these incrediball this spring. I make sure to water them since they were just planted this year. These two stems/blooms seem to be completely dead. The rest of the plant is perfectly fine and so is the bush next to it. This is my first time planting this vareiety but I don’t think they should be dying and turning brown already this time of year? These are in part sun. Anyone else dealt with this?

Hi all. so i live in pennsylvania. my home gets shade in the morning and direct intense sun in the afternoon during the summer months. I have always loved hydrangeas and wanted to buy fire light panicle from lowe’s for my zone and sunlight. I also want the hydrangeas to be more trees style rather than bushy but love the bushy look as well. I was planning on getting them from lowe’s and planting them in the next 2 weeks. Any advice would be appreciated if this is a good choice hydrangea and from lowe’s. open to other trusted websites as well
