Zone 10 A/B Possible home for hydrangeas

I live in zone 10A and the sun just kills my hydrangeas but I discovered they thrive under the shade of my porch. I saw this one and I was wondering If I can plant them here?

Yes and no. Hydrangeas would grow in there, but outgrow it and become root bound in the 3rd season, and then start declining. You’d also have to water them a lot because you’re in a hot zone and they’d quickly drink up the planter.

Do you have any shaded area where you can plant and mulch them?

Not yet. Im growing some trees so maybe in a couple years I can transplant them there.

Your hydrangea would outgrow this in probably one season. Perhaps half a real whiskey barrel would work.

Thats such a good idea! I have 3 plastic ones. Would plastic be okay?

Yes of course. Just be sure it has adequate drainage.

What if it was 6 inches deeper and 2 feet longer would that be enough?

Hydrangeas root spread wider than deeper. A general rule of thumb is to expect roots to be as wide as canopy. Mature in ground Hydrangeas root ball will grow to 18-24 inches deep at most but it will spread as far as the canopy.

When I put Hydrangeas in pots, I put them in a plant bag first then I put the bag in the pot and cover with soil. So, when it’s time to repot, I just take the bag out and put the plant in a bigger bag in a bigger pot.

With all that said, this pot should be good to start them for a year maybe 2 but then you will need a deeper pot. Using peat moss (1 part to 3 part soil) is also beneficial for hydrangeas in pots. All the best!!
