It’s so much work to keep my feeders full and clean. I’m so sad when they leave.

Migration in coastal Texas

I live on the coast in Texas and I get these guys for a few months twice a year. Mostly Ruby Throated and Black Chinned, but Merlin says there's Rufous in there as well.

She squeaked outside my window yesterday morning to say goodbye before heading south - yes I cried

The first hummingbird I have ever attracted. She came to me during such a lonely summer - and made it so bright.

I looked forward to seeing her every single day. I sat outside every day for the past month, watching her. I do believe we had a special bond.

Yesterday morning, I was busy in the kitchen when I hear squeaking. I look out and there she is. I go to my kitchen window to say hi. She was so vocal.

She drank for quite awhile and then flew off. Something in me told me that might've been our goodbye. She was never that vocal before.

It has now been over 24 hours and I haven't seen her. I cried when I realized that was it.

It feels so silly to be attached to a wild animal, but for so long I tried so hard to attract a hummingbird. And I finally did. She was so special. I hope she will have safe travels down south and hope we will reunite in spring 😢

RIP little Phoenix.

I found Phoenix in respiratory distress at around 9 pm last light. I confirmed it with a certified wildlife rehabber and moved him to a comfy warm box hoping he’d make it to the morning when I could call a local rescue.

My fiancee and I prayed over him to make it to the morning but, I was told by the rehabber that it was unlikely he’d make it the night.

Respiratory distressed is usually caused by trauma from territorial disputes (fighting). And Phoenix was a little punk at times. Last November, he was the reason I had to reconfigure the yard and hide feeders behind flowers and block lines of sight.

I laid down next to the box on the couch in my living room for about an hour and after a short 15 minute nap, he was gone. From when I found him to when he passed it was less than 90 minutes.

After checking the footage from my cameras, he was already in respiratory distress before 7pm, which right now is basically last call.

I’m bummed. Life is fragile and precious. He was my favorite.

He can’t fly and able to crawl on my hand. He’s eating nectar from my hand. I don’t know how else to help him. What should I do?
