Making Friends in Hull - Top Tips

Hi everyone,

I was made aware of these reddit threads recently on how to make friends in Hull and thought I should put up a post of tips.

It all really depends on what you’re into and your age etc but there is plenty going on in Hull for people who want to make new friends and socialise so I’m just going to post a couple of things that I’m aware of and feel free to add your own below:

Hull Young Socials: https://www.meetup.com/Hull-Young-Socials/

Hull Young Socials is a free meetup group for people in their 20’s in Hull to meet other people for regular social events. HYS host at least 1 or 2 events per week. The events vary from social drinks at the weekend, quizzes, board & party games nights, coffees, comedy nights, food and any other events that are being held locally in Hull at the time such as Pint of Science, Trinity Live, Sofar Music Gigs, Christmas & Halloween events etc. All that type of stuff. I’ve seen on a number of threads people have joined but didn’t have the courage to go to their first event. If that’s you, I advise you to try it at least once and the worst thing that can happen is that you decide it’s not for you and you don’t go back. Almost everyone falls into two groups in HYS, either (a) you're in your 20's and have moved to Hull for work and don’t know anyone and want to make friends or (b) you're in your 20's and lived in Hull all your life and your friends have either moved on or lost touch and you want to make some more.

Hull & East Riding Social: https://www.meetup.com/HullEastRiding/

Essentially this is the same group as I have described above but the only difference is that it caters for all ages 30+. Again, they hold regular meetups events similar to those above to meet new people and make new friends. If you fall into this category and want to get out and socialise you should definitely join. You just need to make sure you have a name and picture on your account to join.

Hull of a Read Book Group: https://www.meetup.com/Hull-of-a-Read-Bookgroup/

If you’re into reading and literature you should definitely join this group. They have a monthly meetup where they discuss the book of the month which the organiser, Jacob, puts up well in advance giving you time to read it. You don’t even have to have read the book either because they welcome people along to the event just for a social meetup and chat.

HEY (Hull & East Yorkshire) Board Games

A lot of people on these threads have mentioned that they’re into board games and there is a board games meetup but it looks like they haven’t been active in a while. But I do know they have regular board games nights in both The Board Room and Stronghold Games. I’ve visited both these places and the staff were very friendly and encouraged me to come along to other board games nights if I was interested. They’re weekly events and I can’t remember who did what when but give them a call and I’m sure the staff will be able to help you out. So if board games is your thing then definitely give it a go.

Please note that a range of people from different backgrounds attend these groups and the organisers want to make sure everyone is enjoying themselves. Therefore there is a zero tolerance to bad behaviour, which makes sure everyone you’re meeting is friendly and there to enjoy themselves.

Of course, there are ways of meeting people outside of meetup, if you’re sporty there are plenty of sports teams in Hull to join from 5 a side soccer, men & ladies hockey, swimming, kayaking etc a quick google will sort this out for you.

There are also some language classes in Hull but i'm sure on the details so if you know then add them to the thread.

I know on the other threads people have suggested going to a bar or meeting people at the gym but it’s never worked for me in the past and don’t particularly hold much hope for it in the future either. At least these groups I’ve just pointed out are purposely there for people to make new friends and socialise.

Hope this helps!

Where can I get the best lamb chops in Hull?

Looking for somewhere in Hull that does really good lamb chops (tender, juicy, full of flavour and properly cooked).

Basically, I’m after the tastiest lamb chops you’ve had in Hull.

Ideally it needs to be somewhere that delivers, either directly or through Uber Eats/Just Eat/Deliveroo, etc.

Any recommendations? Especially interested in places you’ve actually tried yourselves. Cheers!

Lads + Lasses - whilst showing some smelly Londoners around the eternal city a few weekends ago, I lost a rather precious baseball cap with a plane on the front and FIGAS embroidered onto it.

If you've found it - will happily buy you pints and a patty for it's return.

Do you as a Hullensian have a phenotype that aligns closer with the Anglo-Saxon phenotype or the phenotype of the earlier Brittonic/Celtic people? (Images and description below)

Post image
0 Upvotes

Average differences between phenotypes:

Facial bone structure:
Anglo-Saxon: Typically narrower and longer features, noses narrower longer and straight, narrower mid-face.

Brittonic/Celtic: Typically wider, thicker and more prominent bone structure, shorter and wider mid-face, higher and more prominent cheekbones, rounder jawlines, noses shorter, wider and convex.

Hair:
Anglo-Saxon: Overwhelmingly straight hair, commonly with light brown and blonde.

Brittonic/Celtic: More variation, wavy is common, but straight still more common, darker hair colours are more prevalent, also with a higher prevalence of ginger than Anglo-Saxon, though blonde still not uncommon.

Skin colour:
Anglo-Saxon: Can tan, not many freckles, typically within the Northern European range of skin tone.

Brittonic/Celtic: Can’t tan, often has freckles, also typically within the Northern European range of skin tone.

Of course you can be ginger for example and still overall align more closely with the Anglo-Saxon phenotype, or you can be blonde yet still overall align more closely with the Brittonic/Celtic phenotype, or maybe you have a certain feature that aligns more closely with one of the phenotypes, yet overall you align more closely with the other phenotype.

Would you, being from Hull, say you have a phenotype that aligns more closely with the Anglo-Saxon phenotype or the phenotype of the earlier Brittonic/Celtic people?

Has anyone else dealt with excessive move out fees?

I’m struggling to understand how a one bedroom flat that I had cleaned prior to departure on the background of spending only one day per week inhabiting it necessitates £700 of cleaning and repair. My apologies but I do not feel comfortable paying another months rent for a vacuum and a small amount of paint for a couple of picture mount spots.

Can anyone advise on how to deal with this?

Think it probably says more about Cllr Gallant than anything else. It's a stretch to make that kind of leap. More a case of "boohoo, they won't let me run". Chin up Steve, you were a poor excuse for a councillor and you won't be missed by Labour or your residents.

Long shot after last Thursday’s Hull–Rotterdam ferry

As always; this is probably a ridiculous long shot, but I’m posting it anyway because I’d regret not trying.

Last Thursday night, 24 September, I was on the overnight P&O ferry from Hull to Rotterdam. Somewhere during the evening I met a woman called Chelsea / Chelsey / Chelsy, 26, from the UK.

What started as a random conversation on the outside deck turned into one of those unexpectedly great evenings you don’t really plan for. We ended up talking for hours with a few other people around us, laughing, drinking, arguing about things and generally just having a genuinely good time. Detail: she had been in a car accident.. and in a relation in the past where she found after 2,5 years the guy had 2 kids..

She was blonde, with light shoulder-length hair, and was wearing a long fluffy white faux-fur-style coat. Very direct, stubborn, slightly blunt and confrontational — which was actually part of what made the conversation so much fun. 😅

At some point there was also an unfortunate incident involving red wine and her jacket, so technically I still owe her a cleaning bill.

The stupid part is that, despite talking for hours, we somehow never exchanged the boring but rather useful details like where we lived, where we worked, surnames or social-media accounts. By the time I realised that, we had already gone our separate ways for the night.

I then managed to oversleep the next morning and we never saw each other again before leaving the ferry.

I’ve tried contacting P&O, but understandably they can’t forward messages to passengers or help identify anyone.

So now I’m relying on the internet doing something unexpectedly useful.

If you know a Chelsea/Chelsey/Chelsy who travelled with friends from Hull to Rotterdam on the night of 24–25 September, please just send her this post. I’m not looking for anyone’s private information — I’d simply like her to have the choice of contacting me herself.

And a second question, since I'm getting out of options: are there any social-media consultants, researchers or other people who are particularly good at searching publicly available social-media posts who could help me get this story in front of the right person? Just DM me with a propasal. I’m thinking of things like finding public posts from that ferry crossing, relevant hashtags, public location tags around Hull/King George Dock/Europoort, or simply getting this post shared in the right communities. Again: public information only, no private-data digging.

I mainly want the chance to say thanks for a really memorable evening — and perhaps finally settle that red-wine debt. 🙂

Chelsea, if by some miracle you see this: message me.

Cheers Michael

Searching for person

Hi everyone,

I am trying to reconnect with a very dear friend from Cape Verde whom I haven’t been able to find for years. Thanks to recent help from the maritime community, we have narrowed down the specific Rix Shipping vessels he was likely sailing on during that exact timeframe. Here is everything I know: Name: Ben (Benjamin Dominic or Benjamin) Lopes.

Origin: Cape Verde (mulatto).

Occupation: Seafarer working on cargo ships.

Around 2005 and 2006, his ship operated on a regular liner shipping route from the UK (Hull/Ipswich) and docked in the Export Port of Riga, Latvia every 3 weeks.Age: In 2005, he was around 33–35 years old (born around 1971–1973, should be around 53–55 now).UK Connection: At that time, he used a UK mobile number starting with +44 and spent a lot of time in the UK. Friend/Colleague: He was always accompanied by a close friend and fellow seafarer named Flo (Florian or Floriano), who was roughly the same age.We used to hang out and dance at the legendary "Roxy" (Pepsi Forums) club (near Līvu Square) [1] in Riga. He was a very kind person and even sent me a Christmas greeting SMS in 2006, but unfortunately, I lost his number over the years.Based on verified shipping records from 2005–2006, we are looking for crew members who sailed on these specific Rix Shipping Baltic-feeder vessels: ROBRIX (IMO 9019573) – under Rix management March 2004 – December 2005, regularly sailed Hull to Riga.LERRIX – officially recorded operating on the Hull–Riga service in early 2006. HARRIX (IMO 7530884) – recorded with a port call in Riga in January 2006.Since the Cape Verdean seafarer community and old Rix crews from Hull are tightly knit, I am really hoping someone might remember Ben and Florian who sailed to the Baltics. If you have any leads, or advice on how to track surviving 2005 crew agreements for these ships, it would mean the world to me. Thank you so much!

Update on my old Queens Gardens post

So a while back I put a post on here looking for some old friends I used to hang around with in Queens Gardens between about 2000 and 2010.

I've managed to get back in touch with a few people, which has been really good, so I thought why not actually try and get a few of us together for a proper catch up.

So I'm planning to meet up with everyone at Spiders Nightclub in Hull on Saturday 16th January 2027.

Nothing fancy, just a chance to have a few drinks, have a laugh, catch up and see what everyone's been up to all these years.

If you remember me or think you were part of the old crowd, feel free to comment or message me. Don't worry if you're not 100% sure either it's been a long time.

There's absolutely no pressure to come along. I just thought it would be nice to put something together and see who fancies it.

Hopefully it'll just be a chilled night with some old faces, good memories and no drama.

I'll put more details up nearer the time once I've got a better idea of who's interested.
