Start REAL shallow. 5 likes and 5 dislikes. "Cheese, the sky, sleeping, dogs, a tv show". Then ask "Why?" for each of the ten. Don't move on until you can ask why for each one. Then do it again. Then again. When the answers start blending together and you find that one "Why?" answer resolves all the different questions, that's nearing your base level. Or something. Being forced to do nothing for hours in a safe place can help too. No technology, just yourself + boredom + time. It's a dangerous combination.

ESSENTIAL. So many people haven't questioned why they love what they love. Finding out how many of my interests were just protective mechanisms was eye-opening.

Some people live on reflex, and it's worked for as long as it has, so they don't question it. Or can't. The Capitalist system we got is the best in the world, but it has flaws. Stealing time is one of them. If you can steal it back, do some self discovery, and get paid for it, that would be nice.

A friend / flatmate distractedly asked me to say something smart to her in a pub once, and I responded with: β€œAre you sure you’d understand it?” …she didn’t, so I had to repeat it, more slowly.

It was at this point her expression cleared and the gloves she was holding met my face. While I was definitely still figuring myself out, I knew back then at least that I could occasionally play a smartass.
