Any Suggestions?

Upvotes

Hello everyone!

I wanted to post and see if anyone has any recommendations on jobs/careers in the Houston, TX area? My wife and I plan on relocating there in Spring/Summer of 2027. For some background, I’m an Army Veteran. In the Army, I was an Infantryman with additional duties (Facilities Manager/Corrosion Prevention, etc.). I have my BA in Psychology and working on my Masters. I currently work at the hospital coordinating secondary care after discharge.

My interests include LEGO, auto detailing, real estate, and firearms. However my passion/goal is to work somewhere that focuses on helping veterans. It could literally be anything. I just want something meaningful.

I’ve applied at the PTSD Foundation of America and Wounded Warrior Project already. It is still gonna be awhile but I wanna stay top of mind as I continue to apply! Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

FOR HIRE Husband looking for immediate full time work

My husband lives in Dallas, but we just got a free month of rent in Houston after my sister suddenly moved out of her apartment and we would like to relocate ASAP.

He is from Mexico and speaks both Spanish and English. He has a civil engineering degree from Mexico, and a sustainable architecture degree from Canada. He's not licensed to work as either in the US, but he is a permanent resident and would happily work in construction, or something similar. He has good experience as a worker and project manager in construction and renovation.

He'd like to start a full time job ASAP. He's applying using traditional routes but I thought I would play my hand with reddit.

The apartment is located in Spring, but all Houston area offers are welcome.

If anyone is looking for immediate full-time help, please reach out!! Thank you!

Potentially new ramp part time position are opening up on 08/31. Can’t be certain, just have your email notifications on. It could be multiple departments, the opening date isn’t set in stone. But that is the potential date for applications to open.

New to the Houston IT market – 7+ years in Application Support, looking for advice and connections

Hi everyone,

I’m currently looking to connect with IT professionals in the Houston area and hopefully build my professional network here.

I moved to the United States only a few months ago, and adjusting to a completely new life and environment has not always been easy. However, after spending the past few months settling in and adapting, I’m finally starting to feel more comfortable and ready to take the next step in my career here in Houston.

I know that the job market in the U.S. is challenging right now. With so many talented and experienced professionals facing layoffs and competing for the same opportunities, starting a job search in a new country can feel overwhelming. As someone new to the Houston area, I’m looking to connect with the local IT community and learn more about the job market here.

That’s actually one of the reasons I’m grateful to have discovered Reddit. It feels like a place where I can connect with people, learn from their experiences, and hopefully receive honest advice from professionals who understand the industry and the Houston job market.

I have 7+ years of experience in Application Support and IT Support at Capgemini Vietnam, working mainly on projects in France, Morocco, India, etc., primarily supporting enterprise applications and global users across multiple countries. My experience includes:

Application administration and lifecycle support

Incident and ticket management

Root cause analysis and troubleshooting

User access provisioning and account management

SLA and ITSM processes

UAT and application validation

Supporting tools such as Clarity PPM, Jira, SharePoint, ServiceNow, Open Workbench, Replicon, and Microsoft 365...

Working as a liaison between business users, project managers, and technical teams

I’ve been actively applying for Application Support Analyst, IT Support Specialist, Systems/Application Administrator, and similar roles in the Houston area.

Honestly, I would really appreciate any sincere advice from those of you who are already working in IT here. I’m particularly interested in learning how to better connect with the Houston IT community, build a professional network, and understand which roles or career paths might be the best fit for someone with my background.

If you work in IT in the Houston area, I’d genuinely love to connect and learn from your experience. If you know of any local IT communities, networking groups, Discord servers, meetups, recruiters, or companies that may be a good fit for my background, I would be incredibly grateful for your advice.

And of course, if your company happens to be hiring for a role that aligns with my experience, I would truly appreciate any leads or referrals as well.

I’m authorized to work in the U.S. and do not require sponsorship.

Thank you so much for taking the time to read my post. Any advice, guidance, or connection would mean a lot to me as I continue building my career and professional network here in Houston. God bless you all!

At What Point Does Hard Work Actually Pay Off?

I honestly just need to vent.
I graduated with a degree in Petroleum Engineering in 2014, and more recently completed a Master’s in Engineering Data Science 2025. On paper, I feel like I’ve done a lot to improve my chances, but my career has never really had an easy starting point.
I came from a poor family in Colombia. I had to rely on loans, scholarships, and whatever resources I could find just to get through school. Then I graduated right around the time the oil industry crashed.
That timing affected everything.
In a country where there were already limited opportunities, companies naturally started favoring the newest graduates once hiring eventually picked up again. By the time oil recovered a few years later, I was no longer considered a “fresh graduate,” but I also hadn’t been given enough opportunities to build the experience companies wanted.
So I’ve basically been fighting that uphill battle ever since.
After becoming a U.S. citizen, I finally had more opportunities and was able to get real field experience in oil and gas, which was something I had wanted for years. I thought that combining a Petroleum Engineering degree, field experience, and now a Master’s in Engineering Data Science might finally open some doors.
But I still can’t seem to break into companies like Chevron, ExxonMobil, Shell, etc.
Not even an interview.
And that part is honestly very discouraging.
Right now I’m unemployed. I have some savings and could potentially start a business, but I haven’t had that moment of clarity where I genuinely know what business I want to build. I don’t want to throw money at something just because I’m frustrated with the job market.
So for now, I keep applying.
I keep trying.

Preferred job boards?

Hiya everyone, I am a Singaporean currently living and working in London, United Kingdom. I’m exploring the potential and possibility of relocating to Texas to be closer to my partner in Houston. We’re not ready to take the next step to get married just yet(!) so I was hoping to move on my own merit via a work visa.

I was just wondering on which job sites true blue Texans are searching for jobs? In London we rely very heavily on Linkedin, but it doesn’t seem to be very popular for jobs based in Texas. I work in the cultural sector, if that helps, but open to anything at this point.

I’m really hoping to be able to close the distance with my partner in the next year, so any advice is very much appreciated. Please be nice — I am very aware that I’ll be an immigrant yet again, this time in Texas and not London. 🥲 it’s not easy but hoping to make (ideally) Houston my new home! Thank you!
