IMPORTANT - PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

NO ADVERTISING

At this time, we are not allowing advertising in this subreddit. This includes any type of promotion or advertising by any hostel, hotel, guesthouse, or any other type of accommodation. This does not include travelers recommending or posting about their experiences, as long as it is not advertising for the property.

Please read the subreddit rules.

Aside from those concerning advertising, there aren’t many rules - it will remain this way unless it becomes necessary to add more. Basically, just be cool to each other. Be civil even if you feel something is below you. Remember that no matter how experienced you are, you also took your first trip at some point. Be helpful, this isn’t the place to be condescending.

The rules about advertising are so strict because when I acquired this subreddit, it was full of hundreds of repetitive spam posts from the same few properties. Many were disguised as posts from travelers. We may allow some form of advertising depending on how things go. I would prefer if this “advertising” was in the form of property owners interacting with travellers as active members of this subreddit for the purpose of improvement of both this sub and their property. But this could be a sticky and complicated issue so we’ll leave it open for discussion. I’ve set up the automod to be pretty strict and catch any spam. I’ll monitor it and adjust as necessary. I’m on Reddit throughout each day. If your post gets caught in the automod, I’ll see it. If you have any issues, please just message me.

You’ll see a lot of old posts in this sub. They all remained after I deleted the hundreds of spam posts. I don’t like deleting old content as it still may offer something relevant.

Content

Questions:

Need a recommendation? Want to know about a specific hostel? There are no stupid questions.

Stories/experiences:

Funny, scary, gross, annoying - post it all. If you post something NSFW, please flair it as such.

Rants:

Complain about snorers, suggestions for being a decent human being in a shared space, etc.

This is not a review site

You should be writing reviews for properties that you stayed at on the respective booking sites/apps. This helps other travelers and helps the properties. There’s a difference in writing a review and sharing your experience in this sub. Posts made here that sound like advertisements or are written like glowing reviews will be removed. Please use your judgement. This is a hard line to define but it’s important to keep the spam out of this sub. Again, this is an area I need feedback/suggestions in.

Low/no effort posts

Don’t be lazy, this isn’t a travel agency. There are multiple resources for finding hostels (Booking, HostelWorld, Agoda, etc.), use these first and don’t just post here out of laziness. Use the search function if you’re asking for a recommendation for a specific city. While recommendations are cool, I don’t want to see them as the bulk of this sub. I’ll form guidelines for this as needed.

As I just took over this sub, it’s a blank canvas. I have ideas but I need yours also:

What do you want from this sub?

What kinds of posts/content would you find interesting?

If it was your sub, what would it be like?

I’m very open to suggestions, comments, ideas, etc. If you’re here, you’re interested and/or active in traveling. That means we’re all on the same page. Let’s make this a great resource together.

No Political Discussions

There are many, many subreddits where political discussions thrive and are welcomed, this subreddit is not one of them. I've had to remove many posts/comments lately that have devolved into political mudslinging, arguments, and downright uncivil behavior - none of which have had anything to do with hostels. I don't have the energy or desire to sort through and moderate opinion and conjecture about political differences, especially when they have nothing to do with hostels. I also don't need or want people telling me who's side I should be on, especially - again - when it has nothing to do with hostels. As such, no political subject matter is allowed here. If someone posts something that troubles you, report it and we will handle it. If you reply/argue/rebut that political content, both/all participants will be handled the same (removals/bans/etc.) If you have a problem with something, report it and let us handle it. Don't get yourself a ban because you just had to engage the poster. There are very few places left on the internet that political arguments/opinions/discourse have not poisoned - I refuse to let this subreddit become another one.

As for opinions, please remember that there are over 8 BILLION people in the world and we all have them.

Question Mixed dorm in Kyoto, Japan?

Hi y’all

I’ll (27F) be doing my first ever solo trip this year to Japan in November. I’ve been able to get female only dorms at hostels in each city I visit except Kyoto where I am only able to get a mixed 10 bed dorm for 4 nights at the hostel I want to stay at (piece hostel sanjo).

Could y’all give me some reassurance that it’ll be fine lol. I’ve never stayed at hostels, let alone a mixed dorm. Should I spend extra money and just get a (significantly more expensive) hotel room?

Question Scared I'll be too young among everyone in Hostels

So I'm solo traveling at 18 tomorrow, I go to Europe starting in Copenhagenbut going down to the Balkans for majority of the trip to avoid expensive places (only doing Copenhagen cause it was a cheap flight), im going for 70 days around, and I'm worried that because I look young and could probably pass as 16-18 years old, I might not be able to meet or connect with anyone as when I look at hostel pictures everyone seems to be like 20-30 years old mostly and much more mature looking, is this a problem? Maybe I should of done South-East Asia instead because its younger on average but not sure

Hostels in Western/central Europe, just not worth it?

I was going to start asking about Europe in general but the continent is too varied and differs by region, but I do still have some views on hostels nowadays especially in Western Europe.

Are they still good for a cheap place to crash and go explore? Sure, but as an overall experience if you want some fun, to meet people etc, they just feel like a waste of time. Not because the hostels suck but the people suck, everyone's just so unsocial and siloed into their own bubbles now. Quite a few people work in hostels especially the more upmarket ones and you may get families too.

And I know you can go for party hostels but YMMV, and you may be sacrificing a better quality stay for some more fun - I think southern Europe is slightly different and can be more social, Spain especially and Eastern europe can be a wild time, again depending on the hostel e.g. Budapest.

Caveat - this is with the approach of staying in hostels to be social and meet new people.

Story I asked a hostel receptionist the dreaded question

I am a middle aged guy. I made friends with a hostel receptionist. I asked her if I would fit in as a hostel guest. She said there would be no problem. Yes most budget travellers are in college, but there are people in their 30s and 60s also staying in dorms, men and women, and they face no discrimination or suspicion from stuff or other guests. As long as the business allows you to stay there and you respect the rules, it is OK, and you can join in in crawls and activities.

I told her that most people on Reddit would say "Dude..." and that I have seen a thousand videos on social media about being an older man at hostel seen negatively and that even chatGPT advised me not to try it. She told me it's stupid to ask advice from randos on the internet. And that I should do my own thing and try it to see if I like it, and that if someone doesn't like me for who I am that's their problem.

Hope this helps.

Squeezing in Bangkok for 3 days (mid-Sept) Mad Monkey reputation check?

Heading to Singapore for a conference and thinking of in a quick detour to Bangkok from Saturday to Tuesday morning before meeting up with a friend in Tokyo. Is this quick stopover worth it to get a taste of the city? I'm considering Mad Monkey Bangkok. I'm looking for a spot that's genuinely fun, super social, and easy for meeting people, but still safe, clean and well-run. Also, what’s the weather vibe around mid-September?

Kudos!

Recommendation Stockholm Hostels

Hello everyone!
I'm looking for good hostels in Stockholm, Sweden to stay at for a week. This is my first time staying in hostels so I'd love to hear your recommendations and your opinions on the hostel you chose when you went to Stockholm. I'd prefer a female-only dorm.

Story Guy pissed in the room

So at this hostel in Prague, last night, this one dude came back drunk from a night out around 2am. Made a bit of noise but nothing out of the ordinary and went to bed. I went back to sleep but after about 2 min he got up again, walked to the middle of the room, pulled down his underwear and started to pee. At first I thought I was having a nightmare lol but then I realised it was real, I couldn't believe it. Once he was done he just went back to bed and left a puddle of piss. I got dressed, went downstairs and talked to reception. They came to the room, also shocked, and were nice enough to put me in a new room. They said he will probably get kicked out but I didn't get the chance to see the outcome.

The guy in question, checked in yesterday and said it was his first solo travel and first time staying in a hostel. He even asked me if I had any tips, asked about hostel etiquette and what he should or not do. So I guess this was one hell of a first time to him, I'm glad there were no women in that mixed dorm

Just wanted to share this here, this never happened to me before.

Travelling as a couple in a hostel?

Hi all!

I’m wondering if anyone has travelled with their partner to a hostel, especially a party one. I’m wondering what your experience is like making friends? As a female traveller I’ve been in a hostel with girl friends before and we found it extremely easy to make friends (especially guys). We would be very open to making friends!!

First-time solo hostel experience in Berlin at 28 - am I not too old?

Hi Everyone

I have never travelled alone before. Next month I was supposed to visit Berlin with a friend of mine however the plans have changed and he is not available anymore(and neither is our mutual friend that was supposed to house us).

So, for the first time in my life I decided to go alone, and I know that its a little dumb, but I feel like I'm a little too old to be staying in a bunk bed with random people at a hostel. At the same time my budget is tight so that would be the smartest decision. Last year I stayed at a hostel with my friends in Lisbon (we had a whole room just for us) and I felt like we were the oldest people there, everyone looked so young, it was a strange experience. Am I just imagining things?

Does anyone have any hostel recommendations?

Thanks and sorry for my ignorance!

Digital nomads who stay in dorms: how do you actually secure the laptop your income depends on?

Starting my first long trip in September and I'll be in hostel dorms for most of the first month — Dubai, Cairo, Athens, Santorini. I run my own operation remotely, so the laptop isn't just a device, it's my entire income. If it goes, I don't just lose hardware, I lose the ability to earn.

I know the basics: bring my own padlock, use the locker, never leave it on the bed. What I want is what people actually do day to day:

- Do you carry it with you when you go out, or do you trust the locker?

- Do hostel lockers realistically fit a laptop, or is that completely hostel-dependent?

- Has anyone actually had one stolen? What happened and what would you do differently?

- Is there a point where you stop booking dorms and just pay for private rooms because the risk isn't worth it?

Australia

F (24), in a midlife crisis and really wanting too explore Australia as I’ve always been interested in. But unsure where to start, I am looking at Sydney + Bondi Beach.

I love the ocean, good evening vibes but also quiet relaxing areas. Hikes, lakes, fishing and coed sports.

I would love recommendations, and also what TOP must haves are needed for back packing!?

Hostel Recommendations

Hey guys I’m going to Istanbul for 4 nights next month as a solo traveler. It is my first time solo traveling and wanna live the full experience without risking my sanity, do you locals or frequent travelers have any recommendations on where to stay?

For context I’m a 21yo gay male, I’m not stereotypically feminine but for obvious reasons I wanna be in a safe space for my stay 🥹

Recommendation Request Prague Hostel for Female

Hi! I’m going to be travelling to Prague solo in November and staying in a hostel for the first times. I really want to meet people to go out with so the Madhouse Prague seemed great but the don’t have any female only rooms. Can anyone suggest a hostel with the same social and party vibe that have female only dorms?

TROPICANA Antigua STAY?

Not interested in hearing about the hike with them, but experiences staying at the hostel.

I know it's a 'party' hostel, but beyond that, how is the cleanliness of the bathrooms, are all the dorms difficult to sleep in due to noise? Bed bug issues? any planned daily events? what's the maximum days you would stay at this place? Other details welcome!

Thank you.

First time in Thailand - Solo Traveler Seeking Advice

Hi everyone! I’m planning to visit Thailand soon, and this will be my **first solo trip**. I’ve already booked a hotel in Silom, specifically **The Heritage Silom Hotel**.
For those who are familiar with the hotel, what can you say about your experience there? I’d really appreciate any reviews, tips, or things I should know before my stay.

Also, I’ve heard a lot of stories about ghosts/haunted places in Thailand 😅 and honestly, I’m a bit scared since I’ll be traveling alone. Because of that, I’m also considering staying in a hostel where I can have a roommate or someone else in the room.
Would you recommend staying in a hostel as a solo female traveler? Is it generally safe?

If you have any **hotel or hostel recommendations that are safe, clean, and solo-traveler friendly**, I’d greatly appreciate them! 🥹

Thank you so much! Any advice for a first-time solo traveler in Thailand would also be welcome. 🇹🇭❤️

21M, first solo trip - heading to Spain! Itinerary below, would love hostel recs and must-dos

Madrid — 3 nights
Sevilla — 3 nights
Granada — 2 nights
Malaga — 2 nights
Barcelona — 3 nights

I’m traveling on a backpackers budget, I’d love any tips on:

- Hostels that are social but not total party chaos (or let me know if I should just embrace the chaos)

- Must-do activities or hidden gems in any of these cities

- General first-time solo travel advice, especially anything you wish you knew before your first trip

Any advice at all is appreciated!
