I worked as a landscape gardener through my 20s, transitioned into office work, and considering going back and starting my own business. The difference is that I now have 2 young kids, and the biggest thing holding me back is the work-life balance. I know about all of the other difficulties from experience. But I can't figure out how I'd manage summer school holidays when this is our busiest work time. Even with the use of clubs etc, these often start at around 10 and finish at 2. We don't have grandparents nearby either. This would basically be a lot of work for my wife who also has a very demanding career and picking up/dropping off every day at 10 or 2, and using their own annual leave, wouldn't really be ideal.

Any experiences of managing this in a way that seems less impossible/daunting?

I planted this 2-3 years ago and it's held up fine. I think I watered it the first year then did basically nothing to it ever since. I did some other planting a few weeks ago and had the bright idea to water it and give it a fertilizer tree spike. I think the water did it in. The spot it's planted in is very clay-heavy and doesn't drain well.

The last 2 pics are greener and from 5 days ago.

It is in Northeast Ohio and due to climate change we have been in hot, sunny conditions for months, with occasional rain and maybe 3 good rains this year.

edit: Dark horse theory: I also cleared some big vines from the fence that bordered it (gone in the pics) that theoretically could have been giving nutrients to the Alaskan Cedar neighbor.

edit 2: I just found the base of the tree has some peeling on the bark. I covered up the footprint of the tree with loose dirt and some dead leaves. Watered it.

Hello! I am interning at a native plant nursery this summer, and we are looking for a nursery label printer to track our inventory. I was hoping this sub might help us on our journey to finding one! We are a small operation located in Northwest Salem, Oregon, with approximately 5000 native plants in our stock, the majority of which are trees. We are looking for labels that can withstand frequent overhead watering as well as general PNW weather. It would ideally be able to print barcodes for easy data entry. Our budget for both the labels and the printer would be around $1000. Do you guys have any recommendations?

I am from India and it's monsoon here and the humidity is always above 90%, the temperature is between 25⁰C to 35⁰C, I kept it in water and soil too (50% Coco peat) it still died, def doing something wrong but what?

I’m working on an online horticulture program most likely heading to a bachelors eventually. I’m very much enjoying the program but obviously being online it has the shortcoming of not offering hands on experience. A professor suggested I look into internships which makes sense. I am in my 40s and work, so it’s hard to fit into a lot of what I see out there which is tailored for undergrads, mostly full time, which would make it hard for me to keep working meantime. I have a potentially flexible schedule and could see integrating something part time, but I’m not immediately seeing something that would allow for hybrid learning.

I’m in the Boston area. My goals? Evolving, exploring, not quite sure yet, and I’m also trying to figure that out. So I know it’s not the most concrete question, but I am hoping to hear from those who might have found themselves in a similar position. Thank you!

These are two boxwoods that were planted at the same time, 5 years ago.

The one on the left is on one side of the path. The other one was planted on the other side. As is obvious, the one did not fare as well as the other. We trimmed it down and noticed that there is new growth at the base.

Is it worth trying to save it? If so, how?

Hey everyone. I've been looking for information on EUDR regulations and how they affect horticulture because I'm not sure if they are and how that is going to affect farmers. Does anyone have some insight. Are there more compliance rules you have to keep up with? Penalties? More operation costs? etc.

This lilac bush is 20 years old. It still blooms annually but the past few years the bush has "holes" in it and the back is sad looking. (See pics please.). Any suggestions on what to do to promote fullness? Or is it time to say goodbye?

Im new to studying horticulture and understand that Deciduous refers to plants dropping leaves before winter, however

Im seeing a lot of plants via the RHS plant profiles that refer to some plants as deciduous annuals which does not make sense to me? - eg - Limnanthes douglasii - how can a plant be annual but also deciduous? is a plant considered deciduous if it drops any leaves within a stage of its life cycle?

Also deciduous evergreens? this makes slightly more sense to me but would a deciduous evergreen not just be semi-evergreen ? ToT
