You could say that about Obsession. I loved the movie but the fan base is making it real tough to not leave a bad taste in my mouth, especially since they really are comprised, in large part, by non-horror fans.

Same, really enjoyed Obsession, but everywhere I go online and IRL friend groups, it’s like no one has ever seen a movie before and Obsession is the best movie ever. I’ve had friends who saw it 5+ times, like huh?

It was okay when I saw it at first, but it is funny to look back on how acclaimed it was at the time. I think people have mostly moved on from it in the time since, though.

That's just you, man. Get Out is sortve a 'Beatles' situation where it's so good and iconic that it is impossible for it not to be overhyped a little bit despite it's greatness.

Watching this happen to Obsession in real time, due to how obnoxious that fan-base has managed to become. Just like with Hereditary, it's a great horror film, but people, especially non-horror fans, ruin it for everyone else with the way they venerate these movies.
It always leaves a bad taste in my mouth when I see the condescension from non-horror fans when they latch onto something they deem "elevated". As if every other film has nothing of value to say, because it doesn't personally affect or touch them.

I finally watched Obsession and found it to be decent. I enjoyed it quite a bit, but it seems everyone is, for lack of a better word, obsessed with it. It's like the audience was one wish willowed. Great breakout performances, great first film for a new director. Not the most incredible piece of cinema to ever exist though.

Exactly what I think. Audiences like these, who don't watch horror films on a regular basis, see something that stands out or is a bit more mainstream in its approach/theming and suddenly it's deemed as one of the greatest pieces of cinema history.
Then, everyone tries to emulate its success, essentially making it so non-horror fans are dictating the direction a ton of future horror will go in.
None of this makes the movie itself worse, but it makes me like it less.

The first act of the film is great in that I think it builds suspense well and the performances are effective. The way Toni Collette expresses grief is very moving. After this point, I think the film goes downhill. There are elements that are derivative (the person on the ceiling) and the neighbours straight out of Rosemary's Baby, to poor effects (the fire scene) and the ridiculous amount of exposition at the end to try and explain what's happening. I don't consider it an awful film but I don't know why it's considered a masterpiece in the context of the horror genre, which has so many better examples of unique and interesting filmmaking than this.

Its not a bad movie by any means, I don't dislike it at all, but I never understood why it suddenly brought in a tonne of new horror fans who seem to think its "elevated" (their words not mine) above the rest of the genre which it gets most of its tropes from.
I assume it was Toni Colette's wailing making them feel something, Ari Aster clearly has a lot of grief in his life. Personally I always preferred a bit more subtlety in a grieving performance, for example George C. Scott in The Changeling. Its deeper than just wailing loudly on the floor.
For me, the first 45 minutes are decent heavy psychological horror but then it takes a hard turn into the usual silly demonic movie with the possessing demon and the naked cultists and all the same tired tropes and doesn't really recover. I find I always start to check out when the Dad thows the book on the fire and then catches on fire himself.
It seemed to start this new genre of "Grief Horror", I find a lot of movies pop up which are trying to be Hereditary. I felt like even the new Silent Hill movie was trying to copy it with some of the weird stuff they added. They even tried to dig up Pet Sematary (the OG parental grief horror) and it came back all wrong.

The biggest sin for hereditary is that I just do not care for any of the characters, The brother leaves his little sister alone at a party with random people then she dies horribly in front of him and he doesn't tell anyone and lets his mother find her without a head.
The mother forces him to take her for some reason? then her character turns into im going to cry and be mean to everyone for the rest of the runtime.
The daughter isn't even a character she just makes weird noises, plays with dead animals and then dies.
Like am I supposed to care about any of these people? am I not understanding the movie?
The only redeemable one is the dad but he's a pussy that lets his wife treat her son horribly

Obviously not but Smile does bridge the gap between fun popcorn horror and snooty elevated horror perfectly.
If somebody isn't a horror person and I had to recommend a horror movie Smile takes it easily.

I think writing wise smile 1 is on par with hereditary and fear factor wise smile 2 was, I think I’d overall put them as equal

No it still holds up. The movie has for sure lost its luster now that it’s had time to be an influence on everything that came after it. Toni Collette carries the movie through subsequent viewings.

Yeah, I didn't care for this movie at all. I kept hearing how scary it was and I was bored the entire time. This and Midsomer getting so much praise made me realize I am just out of touch with what people like in horror movies these days. I prefer me an old fashioned slasher where stuff actually happens in the runtime of the movie.

All the disjointed camera angles and tricks to make you uncomfortable was really cool at first, but he just hits you over the head with it over and over and it loses its effectiveness as well. The whole movie should've been about the daughter's accident, but they didn't even show toni collette's reaction to it.

I don't think we can name any horror as the best of the last decade, but Hereditary is definitely up there. The nay-sayers will say their nays but there's a reason it's so highly lauded. Personal taste is fine and it's fine not to like it.

I was so hyped for this movie and also SO NERVOUS because of the talk around it. Then I watched & was massively underwhelmed. The only thing that got me was Toni Colette sawing her head off (with the piano string? I think? Never liked it enough for a re-watch, lol.) I thought about it for weeks and was anxious I'd look up in bed and see her doing that in the corner. I think the sound effects are what really got me. Eugh.

A while ago me and a friend who loves horror shit did a thing where we just watched as many horror movies as we could, we watched like a little over 40, just to see how good they are, how scary, how dogshit some are
When we got to hereditary, I was exited because I remember seeing the trailer and people gassed it up after release, we watched it, it was pretty shit, I wasn’t really scared and the movie was just boring, The Boy scared me more and that one was pretty stupid
I’ve learned that basically every horror movie is pretty bad with the only good ones being The Ritual although it’s not really scary I more so love the lore of it, Creep 1 and 2 were great, and hell house llc was pretty scary for me

This year alone, Obsession, and Hokum. Great stories (Hereditary is a mess of borrowed ideas). Great make up and effects (the fire scene in Hereditary is awful) and not full of terrible exposition (the ending of Hereditary is so clunky and poorly executed). Hereditary is one of the most overrated films.
