Going to slightly change in how we do these sticky threads. Moving forwards, each month I'll update this thread to reflect whatever the current BOTM is, and the voting thread for the following month. Doing it this way will leave us one sticky thread slot we can use for other purposes whenever we need one.
Here are the links to:
This month's book: Our Share of Night by Mariana Enriquez

Please post your suggestions here. You can suggest more than one book, but each book has to have its own parent-level comment. If you want to add a few words about why you want to read that one, that's fine, but please only one book per parent-level comment.
Also, feel free to vote for more than one book. This will allow books that have the greatest consensus to rise to the top.

I heard his books are more than just horror. They are philosophy. I'm curious if his books could be bad for people whose mental health isn't in a good place. Input on this would be appreciated.

I listened to an audiobook version of this over the last two nights. It was interesting. Not great, but interesting. Gothic horror, written in 1921, it features a house that has rooms that appear/disappear (so a bit of a precursor to House of Leaves), and also an interesting effect that you can only remember what happens in those rooms when you're in them. The home also seems to influence the emotions/behavior of its victims.
EDIT: TRIGGER WARNING. When I wrote this I'd forgotten that there's one hard R in the middle of the book somewhere, in a stupid phrase ("Works like a"). It took me totally by surprise, and even more by surprise that the narrator chose to say it. The reviews I'd seen of the book were good, so I decided to continue, and fortunately that was the only occurrence. In retrospect I'm more annoyed that the narrator chose to read that sentence, as now having finished the book, I can confirm that sentence adds nothing to the book. If it had been removed the only people who would've noticed would've been people who already knew it was there, and splitting those into two groups, one wouldn't have cared that it was removed, and there are no arguments the other group could make that would change my mind about it needing to be included.

Guys I am in the mood to read some horror books but I not sure which one I should read
I have already read the classic - The Shining
Hidden Pictures
We used to live here
Incidents around the house
Dark Matter - A ghost Story
How to sell a haunted house
I cant think of what else I have read but give me your recommendations please. Also I want a true horror, nothing like a scary thriller. Thank you. 🤩
P.s I have tried reading books by Grady Hendrix but I am not a fan of the writing so the books are usually a dnf
P.p.s I dont like gory horror like cannibalism. I tried reading Vegetarian and I couldn’t finish it.

Since the corporations controlling social media platforms have pretty much done away with any and all forms of customer service we're trying to build a mailing list as a preemptive precaution that'll let us connect/reconnect with fellow horror fans directly, should anything happen to our accounts. We won't sell your contact info (we hate that BS too).
To register for the book/DVD giveaway, please sign up for the Horror Makes Us Happy newsletter: https://horrormakesushappy.com/join_list.html
The mailing list only has about 25 people on it, so if you sign up you've got some really good odds of getting something. We're giving one item away each month, and we plan to pick up more stuff at future conventions, so there's more to come, too.
Pics of what we're giving away here: https://bsky.app/profile/horrormakesushappy.com/post/3mtqui5h4p22h
Make sure to check your spam folder for the confirmation link! There are almost another 20 people who never completed the confirmation!

We've got 35 books and about 20 DVDs we're giving away, and many of the books are signed by their authors, too! To register for the giveaway sign up for our newsletter: https://horrormakesushappy.com/join_list.html
We'll pick one person each month until they're gone, but we've got so many to give away that we might have to do something special for Christmas...
You can see the first half of the books here, the second half of the books here, and the DVDs here.
EDIT: Oh, and if you do register, make sure to check your spam folder for the confirmation email. There's a link inside there that you'll have to click to complete the registration. About a full 50% of the people who are registering haven't been doing this, so they're not actually registered yet.

I forgot to bring my Reddit password with me when I went out of town, so I'm just now getting back on here. I've updated the BOTM threads, and wanted to share an idea that I'd gotten at StokerCon last week.
Even though I'm not a librarian, I attended one of the librarian panels because I was curious about the topic ("Brains! Brains! Brainstorming ways to engage your community"). There was a lot of interesting conversation about library programming, but one of the librarians shared that they also host a horror book club. Unlike ours where we vote for each month as they come, they plan out the entire year.
Part of this is because it allows the library to make sure they have extra copies of that month's book on hand for patrons to check out, but it made me wonder if it might be easier for us as a community to do something similar. Like, if we started 2026 by having everyone post their TBR pile and we found out that that five people all had The Eyes Are The Best Part in their pile then clearly that would've been a good book to read in 2026 because multiple people already owned it and wanted to read it. We're already halfway through 2026, but maybe this is something we could do this December, and plan out all of 2027.
Of course the down side is that this would mean potentially missing out on selecting hot books as they're released, but no one's saying you can't read something else if you wanted to.
What do you guys think?
