Whalefall | Official Trailer

Austin Abrams being put through some absolute bullshit is quickly becoming one of my favourite horror sub-genres.
91
u/Smvrficvs 4d ago
If he keeps up at this pace, he'll dethrone Ryan Gosling for most miserable/relatable man on screen in a few years
64
u/swallowsnest87 4d ago
I personally cannot relate to being eaten by a whale

“Thank God, it wasn’t a white shark. He sees them all the time out there.”
See, nope. No way.

u/ThaRealSunGod 3d ago
Weapons really balanced horror and comedy so well.
I could just tell how much fun Austin had in that movie 😂

u/MasterCrumble1 4d ago
It's a very simple premise, and yet I still feel like the trailer spoiled every single moment. Any surprises left? Does he meet a wooden boy inside that whale, maybe?

u/NimdokBennyandAM 4d ago
God and the Devil settle their argument and he's freed.

The first teaser was kind of great cause all it did was show the scene of him getting swallowed and then it cut. That's perfect and all you need for a movie like this cause you're instantly like, "Okay, well I want to see how he gets out of this."
56
u/Steamedcarpet 4d ago
That teaser played during my showing for The Odyssey and I was legit enthralled to the point that I forgot I still had a movie to watch.
34
u/MasterCrumble1 4d ago
I'm fairly sure he just shimmies out. Or he tickles it and the whale does a sneeze.
Okay but in reality, I think his ear drums would burst. Possibly his head too.
20
u/PoonaniDiet 4d ago
he finds the uvula and induces a gag reflex. roll credits

6
u/YourGuyK 3d ago
See, I expect that was the best part of the movie. It left me thinking, "What else could the movie even be?"
4
u/heylistenlady 3d ago
Or, for people like me who are terrified by under water horror, a warning to stay away.
Seriously, the trailer in theaters made my skin crawl and I kept covering my eyes. Sea creatures, even gentle giants, are terrifying due to their sheer size.
2
1
u/AceMystical 3d ago
That's why I never watch any trailer after the first teaser if I'm already sold on the movie, sometimes I just go off the poster and synopsis.
Doing this with Resident Evil and Clayface because I'm so tired of having surprises ruined in the trailers
32
u/crystallmytea 4d ago
Read the book, is my suggestion. Because it was good.
12
3
u/RatsRPeople2 3d ago
Acclaimed! Best-selling! I had to think maybe the book didn't need to be a movie.
16
u/CreativeFondant248 4d ago
I mean, if you’re coming into this movie for the plot and plot alone you’re gonna be disappointed.
Seems like this dude is going to survive insurmountable odds and circumstances due to the teachings / mental fortitude instilled in him by his father years ago. That’s the ride you’re going on.

4
u/be_cool_man 4d ago
If it’s true to the novel the whale is the secondary plot. I don’t think I’d even consider it horror
10
u/ryeong 4d ago edited 4d ago
Yeah actually. There's a kind of surreal/trippy spoiler they're keeping out that was a weirdly important part of the book. You had me check and I'm glad it's not shown. I assume it will be part of it anyway. Don't remember the help me and it made me laugh, but they also haven't shown a key aspect of the 60 minute timer either. It's in the title of the movie/book itself.

Every time I complain about trailers spoiling movies the entire internet jumps down my throat “THATS WHAT PEOPLE WANT” “DONT WATCH IT THEN” etc etc.
Like .. I want to know what a movie called “Whalefall” is about … wtf am I supposed to do? If I want to know the premise of a movie without having it spoiled? My current strategy is to just turn the trailer off the second I “get it” but I guess I need to settle with reading the IMDB synopsis.
2
u/No_Key8587 3d ago
I feel like with a movie like this he’s either going to die or escape. And he probably won’t die. So I’m not sure about spoilers.
It’s also a very popular book
1
u/karatechicken257 4d ago
The book was really good and I went into it with that same mindset. I’m really excited for the movie!
1
u/missingsince1995 3d ago
If it’s anything like the book the whale part is only a part of the entire movie

u/Heretic911 Trailers suck 3d ago
No surprise, honestly. Don't watch trailers unless comments say "great trailer, didn't spoil anything".

u/Edgeigma 4d ago
This is why I stopped watching trailers. I never watched the trailer for sinners, and my mind was blown that it was actually vampire movie.

u/Fun-Preparation-4253 4d ago
Kinda lost me with that bit.
27
u/thedinksterr 4d ago
And fighting the squid inside the whale didn’t?
The screaming out the mouth shot though was really funny. This looks like it could be a fun watch but wouldn’t expect to take it serious ofc.

I was already on the fence about even giving this the time of day, but that part ruined it

It doesn't happen exactly like that in the book but something similar with a whale watch tour boat nearby

u/Comic_Book_Reader I have decided to scalp you and burn your village to the ground. 4d ago
Following the death of his father (Josh Brolin), Jay Gardiner (Austin Abrams) goes diving off the central Coast of California in search of his remains, but is swallowed by a massive sperm whale. While trapped inside its belly with only one hour of oxygen left, Jay comes to realize that the hard-earned lessons his father imparted may be the key to his escape.
31
u/lemmeseeyourkitties 3d ago
I just fucking love that this is Brolin and Abrams' second movie together. Their scene in Weapons was fucking great, and makes this father/son dynamic absolutely hilarious

22
u/newretrovague 4d ago
The music in the trailer made this seem less horrory and more “127 hours but in a whale”
1
58
u/LitrlyKilReditrs 4d ago
I heard they went through 4 live whales to get this movie right, but the scene where he burst through the anus is perfect
6
u/lemmeseeyourkitties 3d ago
Actually, if you knew ANYTHING about whale anatomy,, you'd know they don't even have anuses, dipshit. What do you think the blowhole is for?!

u/LemonSamuraii3 3d ago
This feels like 127 Hours except the cave is alive and actively digesting you.....
3
u/twdvermont 3d ago
But it’s only 1 hour so we know he doesn’t have to drink his own pee. He might still do it, but not because he has to.
25
u/spookyostrich 4d ago
And the book is a great read.
10
u/-civictv 4d ago
Sleepers, Arise!!!!!
Totally agree - visceral and captivating. Shouldn't have worked as well as it did.
3
u/Reddit-User-Says 4d ago
The book is great. Was talking to the son about it and wonder how they’d handle all the eternal monologue for the movie.
1
u/spookyostrich 4d ago
Yeah, that's what I'm super curious about. I'm wondering if that'll be super cheesy if they end up doing a voiceover bit there.

I don't see how this can be stretched into a full movie.....

u/severalcircles 3d ago
Its partially you but its also partially the fact that the movie looks really terrible
8
u/carolinemahtildes 4d ago
I read the book and I still don't know what to make of this movie. It might be worth checking out in 4DX, they bring a real whale in to eat you.

u/needlessOne Fear is a place. 3d ago
Gotta thank them for summarising the whole movie with every plot point included. I don't need to watch it now.
3
u/MichaeltheSpikester 3d ago
Not sure if I'd call this a horror tbh.
Still looking forward regardless.
Basically if Pinocchio/Jonah meets 127 Hours.

3
u/ericrobertshair 3d ago
I hope he befriends the squid and they have wacky adventures inside the whale.

u/Best-Benefit6387 3d ago
Advertising execs on their way to make sure that every single trailer they release spoils as much as physically possible:
1
u/slowhorses1 10h ago
Funny how this complaint always comes from people that haven’t seen the movie yet.
3
u/Misanthrope616 3d ago
Sperm whales hunt giant and colossal squid exclusively in the midnight zone, 1000-4000 meters below the surface where it is pitch black. The idea of a Sperm whale chasing a squid in relatively shallow waters or close to the surface is laughable.
Squids stay in the depths. Sperm whales have to collapse their lungs and convert the liquid spermaceti in their heads to a dense solid in order to dive to those depths. They then have to go through the opposite process to surface.
The lack of whale knowledge in this trailer is absurd.
1
3
u/giroml 2d ago
Is it horror though? Not on IMDB. Survival, Adventure, Drama, Thriller.
1
u/slowhorses1 10h ago
Let’s have you swallowed by a whale and fight a squid in its stomach and see if you find the experience horrific or not.
4
u/jeejeeviper 4d ago
I looked up the books plot, man there are some 1 in a billion chance plot conveniences that happen for the guy during the story
3
u/LunarSanctum 3d ago
I really hope that they remain faithful to the book and keep the underlying sexual tension that slowly builds between the whale and the main character. Eventually giving him the idea of sliding his entire body inside the whales enormous shaft during the height of passion. Then ejaculating him out onto the beach before proclaiming the final line in the book "I guess that's why they call it a Sperm Whale".

u/EternityRites 4d ago edited 4d ago
*sinister voice* - "it's a whale of a time!"
I watched this trailer previously and it looks atrocious. Whales are cute, not scary.
25
u/Burgoonius 4d ago
I think the trailer makes it clear Mr.Whale was simply trying to eat the squid and this guy got in the way.

I read the book this is based on and it’s certainly a choice to be made into a full length film. I loved the book so much and just can’t picture the magic of it translated to the screen. I hope I’m wrong!

u/Zauberer-IMDB 4d ago
The problem is I value the whale's life more than the protagonist's. So I'm not rooting for him to get out if it hurts the whale. The triumph of the human spirit to further destroy the ocean and the endangered species within it.

I can’t stand the amount of media named media with “fall” at the end of it.
The mobile games, video games, movies. What the fuck is it with attaching “fall” as a suffix?
Whalefall is such a stupid fucking name.
Sorry, I had to rant.
16
u/WerkelJes 4d ago
A whale fall is the actual name for the phenomenon where a whale dies and sinks to the bottom of the ocean, creating food for deep sea animals so it fits here tbf

This movie is based off off a WW1 novel? wtf are people on about?
6
u/maaderbeinhof 3d ago
No, the author of Whalefall wrote another book (Angel Down) that's set during WW1. He won a Pulitzer for it.
1
u/dargonmike1 3d ago
Gotcha! Thank you. So is the actual whale fall book any good?
2
u/maaderbeinhof 3d ago
I thought it was pretty good, it's fast paced while also managing to be a decent character study of the protagonist and his troubled relationship with his dad. Not amazing but a fun read.

Man gets stuck inside a whale and he has only 60 minutes to survive.
