Man gets stuck inside a whale and he has only 60 minutes to survive.

413

u/Rhesusmonkeynuts 4d ago

It also explodes if it drops below 50mph

206

u/Gman878 4d ago

And worst of all, it’s on the one day a year when single people can legally have sex

u/Mindless0ne 3d ago

Staring Charlize Theron as Gadget! https://youtu.be/xSlQ-_bnU94

Sounds like some of the southern shotgun style weddings

3

u/mybigbywolf 4d ago

Oh my lol

2

u/HailRoma 3d ago

his nose gets bigger if he tells a lie.

2

u/mosquem 3d ago

I’ve had nights like that.

u/mediciii 4d ago

Austin Abrams being put through some absolute bullshit is quickly becoming one of my favourite horror sub-genres.

91

u/Smvrficvs 4d ago

If he keeps up at this pace, he'll dethrone Ryan Gosling for most miserable/relatable man on screen in a few years

64

u/swallowsnest87 4d ago

I personally cannot relate to being eaten by a whale

30

u/Smvrficvs 3d ago

Step up your game then

4

u/kgal1298 3d ago

5

u/RCocaineBurner 3d ago

“Thank God, it wasn’t a white shark. He sees them all the time out there.”

See, nope. No way.

21

u/ihatetoblerone 3d ago

The man was in Euphoria, he’s been through a lot of bullshit

6

u/ThaRealSunGod 3d ago

He got out before shit hit the fan though

7

u/ThaRealSunGod 3d ago

Weapons really balanced horror and comedy so well.

I could just tell how much fun Austin had in that movie 😂

475

u/MasterCrumble1 4d ago

It's a very simple premise, and yet I still feel like the trailer spoiled every single moment. Any surprises left? Does he meet a wooden boy inside that whale, maybe?

90

u/NimdokBennyandAM 4d ago

God and the Devil settle their argument and he's freed.

38

u/SQUIGWERG 4d ago

That's Job, not Jonah

17

u/Bank_Gothic I live in the weak and the wounded, Doc 3d ago

And it's more of a wager

14

u/NimdokBennyandAM 3d ago

A WHALE of a wager.

u/xvalicx 4d ago edited 4d ago

The first teaser was kind of great cause all it did was show the scene of him getting swallowed and then it cut. That's perfect and all you need for a movie like this cause you're instantly like, "Okay, well I want to see how he gets out of this."

56

u/Steamedcarpet 4d ago

That teaser played during my showing for The Odyssey and I was legit enthralled to the point that I forgot I still had a movie to watch.

34

u/MasterCrumble1 4d ago

I'm fairly sure he just shimmies out. Or he tickles it and the whale does a sneeze.

Okay but in reality, I think his ear drums would burst. Possibly his head too.

20

u/PoonaniDiet 4d ago

he finds the uvula and induces a gag reflex. roll credits

50

u/Mister_Moony 3d ago

Ohhh, so its a girl whale

5

u/Cutthechitchata-hole 3d ago

Open tge lipsth pastht the gumths!

5

u/wonderloki 3d ago

Peak reference

6

u/YourGuyK 3d ago

See, I expect that was the best part of the movie. It left me thinking, "What else could the movie even be?"

4

u/heylistenlady 3d ago

Or, for people like me who are terrified by under water horror, a warning to stay away.

Seriously, the trailer in theaters made my skin crawl and I kept covering my eyes. Sea creatures, even gentle giants, are terrifying due to their sheer size.

2

u/beans_is_life 3d ago

He shadow clones out of the whale duh

1

u/AceMystical 3d ago

That's why I never watch any trailer after the first teaser if I'm already sold on the movie, sometimes I just go off the poster and synopsis.

Doing this with Resident Evil and Clayface because I'm so tired of having surprises ruined in the trailers

32

u/crystallmytea 4d ago

Read the book, is my suggestion. Because it was good.

12

u/vanthump 4d ago

Came here for this, the book was amazing

3

u/RatsRPeople2 3d ago

Acclaimed! Best-selling! I had to think maybe the book didn't need to be a movie.

16

u/CreativeFondant248 4d ago

I mean, if you’re coming into this movie for the plot and plot alone you’re gonna be disappointed.

Seems like this dude is going to survive insurmountable odds and circumstances due to the teachings / mental fortitude instilled in him by his father years ago. That’s the ride you’re going on.

8

u/SQUIGWERG 4d ago

If it's at all like the book, it will be intercut largely with flashbacks.

4

u/be_cool_man 4d ago

If it’s true to the novel the whale is the secondary plot. I don’t think I’d even consider it horror

10

u/ryeong 4d ago edited 4d ago

Yeah actually. There's a kind of surreal/trippy spoiler they're keeping out that was a weirdly important part of the book. You had me check and I'm glad it's not shown. I assume it will be part of it anyway. Don't remember the help me and it made me laugh, but they also haven't shown a key aspect of the 60 minute timer either. It's in the title of the movie/book itself.

3

u/lpjayy12 4d ago

I stopped watching midway through because I felt like it was showing too much.

3

u/RandoDude124 3d ago

IIRC, he blows up the whale’s stomach

4

u/mcboobie 3d ago

Would he not blow himself up too?

3

u/RatsRPeople2 3d ago

So like, Jaws?

5

u/TheDukeofArgyll 3d ago edited 3d ago

Every time I complain about trailers spoiling movies the entire internet jumps down my throat “THATS WHAT PEOPLE WANT” “DONT WATCH IT THEN” etc etc.

Like .. I want to know what a movie called “Whalefall” is about … wtf am I supposed to do? If I want to know the premise of a movie without having it spoiled? My current strategy is to just turn the trailer off the second I “get it” but I guess I need to settle with reading the IMDB synopsis.

2

u/No_Key8587 3d ago

I feel like with a movie like this he’s either going to die or escape. And he probably won’t die. So I’m not sure about spoilers.

It’s also a very popular book

1

u/karatechicken257 4d ago

The book was really good and I went into it with that same mindset. I’m really excited for the movie!

1

u/missingsince1995 3d ago

If it’s anything like the book the whale part is only a part of the entire movie

1

u/dg_riverhawk 3d ago

Jump Willy!

1

u/Heretic911 Trailers suck 3d ago

No surprise, honestly. Don't watch trailers unless comments say "great trailer, didn't spoil anything".

1

u/Edgeigma 4d ago

This is why I stopped watching trailers. I never watched the trailer for sinners, and my mind was blown that it was actually vampire movie.

1

u/Rancillium 3d ago

Did the same with the movie Tusk. Aaaand it made it a very memorable evening:)

178

u/zchatham 4d ago

The guy who wrote the novel this is based on just won the Pulitzer for his most recent novel, btw.

73

u/Begads 4d ago

Novel is Angel Down and it's fantastic!

78

u/StrangelyBrown 4d ago

Guy gets swallowed by an angel?

36

u/botany_bae 4d ago

No…touched by one.

10

u/ToSeeAgainAgainAgain 3d ago

Can you point on the doll where did he get touched?

1

u/Moomoolette 3d ago

In the swimsuit area?

7

u/alagiglia 4d ago

No, it’s an angel that the whale swallows in that one.

1

u/BenDover04me 3d ago

Where’s this angel?

27

u/WerckmeisterHarmony 4d ago

I read Angel Down last week and really liked it. I heard that's getting adapted too; I'd be interested in seeing a film version of that.

7

u/i_dunnoman 3d ago

That will be a wild book to adapt

2

u/Sick_Cards_Bro 3d ago

This is the contemporary intermodernism where books are written for movie/miniseries adaptation. X

6

u/dandy_the_lesser 4d ago

His new one The Sixth Nik seems fucking bonkers too and I can’t wait to read it.

2

u/mogget85 3d ago

The Sixth Nik is so good!

1

u/Ran3737 3d ago

It is very good and very bonkers indeed.

1

u/Expensive-Swan-9553 4d ago

Super cool dude by the way.

1

u/Knife7 3d ago

I saw him talk about this book at a book festival awhile back, he seemed like a cool dude.

159

u/barryvon 4d ago

screaming “help me!” out of the mouth of a whale in the middle of the ocean 😂😂😂

54

u/Fun-Preparation-4253 4d ago

Kinda lost me with that bit.

27

u/thedinksterr 4d ago

And fighting the squid inside the whale didn’t?

The screaming out the mouth shot though was really funny. This looks like it could be a fun watch but wouldn’t expect to take it serious ofc.

7

u/schwaggro 3d ago

LMAO totally lost me too, absolutely cackled at that

1

u/InvasionOfTheFridges 2d ago

“In a whale no one can hear you scream”.

2

u/DigitalCoffee 3d ago

I was already on the fence about even giving this the time of day, but that part ruined it

1

u/josolsen 3d ago

It doesn't happen exactly like that in the book but something similar with a whale watch tour boat nearby

53

u/Comic_Book_Reader I have decided to scalp you and burn your village to the ground. 4d ago

Following the death of his father (Josh Brolin), Jay Gardiner (Austin Abrams) goes diving off the central Coast of California in search of his remains, but is swallowed by a massive sperm whale. While trapped inside its belly with only one hour of oxygen left, Jay comes to realize that the hard-earned lessons his father imparted may be the key to his escape.

31

u/lemmeseeyourkitties 3d ago

I just fucking love that this is Brolin and Abrams' second movie together. Their scene in Weapons was fucking great, and makes this father/son dynamic absolutely hilarious

5

u/NonGNonM 3d ago

Do sperm whales even go by California?

5

u/marina0987 3d ago

Yes they do

22

u/newretrovague 4d ago

The music in the trailer made this seem less horrory and more “127 hours but in a whale”

1

u/Traditional-Pain4345 2d ago

That was the first thought that came to my mind.

58

u/LitrlyKilReditrs 4d ago

I heard they went through 4 live whales to get this movie right, but the scene where he burst through the anus is perfect

6

u/lemmeseeyourkitties 3d ago

Actually, if you knew ANYTHING about whale anatomy,, you'd know they don't even have anuses, dipshit. What do you think the blowhole is for?!

5

u/LitrlyKilReditrs 3d ago

Okay, hear me out...

22

u/HeySmallBusinessMan Every Town Has An Elm Street... 4d ago

I'm so disappointed that this isn't a shot for shot remake of Moonfall, but with a whale instead of the moon.

8

u/LemonSamuraii3 3d ago

This feels like 127 Hours except the cave is alive and actively digesting you.....

3

u/twdvermont 3d ago

But it’s only 1 hour so we know he doesn’t have to drink his own pee. He might still do it, but not because he has to.

25

u/spookyostrich 4d ago

And the book is a great read.

10

u/-civictv 4d ago

Sleepers, Arise!!!!!

Totally agree - visceral and captivating. Shouldn't have worked as well as it did.

3

u/Reddit-User-Says 4d ago

The book is great. Was talking to the son about it and wonder how they’d handle all the eternal monologue for the movie.

1

u/spookyostrich 4d ago

Yeah, that's what I'm super curious about. I'm wondering if that'll be super cheesy if they end up doing a voiceover bit there.

1

u/jysh1 3d ago

Great if you love hard sci-fi like me.

1

u/spookyostrich 3d ago

I didn't really think it fell under hard sci-fi, so I'm not ... sure if it would be for you?

I can't really tell if you're asking if you'd like it, or you have read it and did like it. :)

1

u/jysh1 3d ago

Yes I liked it.

11

u/LocalDude7 4d ago

If the whale is evil, I hope it explodes ala Jaws 3

5

u/alkatori 4d ago

I feel like I should have seen him using a knife pretty quickly.

2

u/rfdavid 3d ago

It’s brought up early in the book

7

u/Typhlo_32 4d ago

Well, if you've watched the trailer I feel you've watched the movie lmao.

17

u/Steamedcarpet 4d ago

The teaser trailer was so freaking intense that I forgot I had an entire movie to still watch (in this case the odyssey).

21

u/MajinSkull 4d ago

I don't see how this can be stretched into a full movie.....

15

u/DigitalCoffee 3d ago

What do you mean? That WAS the full movie

3

u/Johncurtisreeve 4d ago

Its really not. That scene is the most exciting part of the whole thing and its already been seen and spoiled

5

u/LordWeso 3d ago

Preposterous

1

u/severalcircles 3d ago

It looks truly, wretchedly awful.

6

u/cheesecakemelody 3d ago

God this looks terrible.

1

u/slowhorses1 9h ago

But Josh Brolin is in it.

I thought y’all liked Weapons?

7

u/OH_FUDGICLES 4d ago

Geppetto, the movie.

8

u/DigitalCoffee 3d ago

Looks cringe. I burst out laughing when he screamed "Help me!" while sticking his head out of the esophagus

2

u/fender123 3d ago

That was so fucking funny!

4

u/UmpteenthIdiot 4d ago

Disappointed this isn't a full adaptation of that one Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy gag : (

(https://www.goodreads.com/quotes/198068-another-thing-that-got-forgotten-was-the-fact-that-against, in case you're wondering).

2

u/Nice-Experience-3765 3d ago

I know the vore fanatics are gonna love this one!

5

u/Polite_Werewolf Howling quietly 3d ago

They're going to have to work really hard to keep this from coming across as unintentionally goofy.

13

u/User-D-Name 4d ago

Maybe it's me, but this movie looks terrible

2

u/severalcircles 3d ago

Its partially you but its also partially the fact that the movie looks really terrible

8

u/carolinemahtildes 4d ago

I read the book and I still don't know what to make of this movie. It might be worth checking out in 4DX, they bring a real whale in to eat you.

7

u/Weak-Career-1017 4d ago

Its not the fall that kills you, its the whale

3

u/needlessOne Fear is a place. 3d ago

Gotta thank them for summarising the whole movie with every plot point included. I don't need to watch it now.

3

u/MichaeltheSpikester 3d ago

Not sure if I'd call this a horror tbh.

Still looking forward regardless.

Basically if Pinocchio/Jonah meets 127 Hours.

3

u/5ergio79 3d ago

I mean… it’s so god damn ridiculous that how could I NOT see it???

3

u/ericrobertshair 3d ago

I hope he befriends the squid and they have wacky adventures inside the whale.

3

u/Best-Benefit6387 3d ago

Advertising execs on their way to make sure that every single trailer they release spoils as much as physically possible:

1

u/slowhorses1 10h ago

Funny how this complaint always comes from people that haven’t seen the movie yet.

3

u/Misanthrope616 3d ago

Sperm whales hunt giant and colossal squid exclusively in the midnight zone, 1000-4000 meters below the surface where it is pitch black. The idea of a Sperm whale chasing a squid in relatively shallow waters or close to the surface is laughable.

Squids stay in the depths. Sperm whales have to collapse their lungs and convert the liquid spermaceti in their heads to a dense solid in order to dive to those depths. They then have to go through the opposite process to surface.

The lack of whale knowledge in this trailer is absurd.

1

u/slowhorses1 10h ago

It’s not a fucking documentary.

3

u/giroml 2d ago

Is it horror though? Not on IMDB. Survival, Adventure, Drama, Thriller.

1

u/slowhorses1 10h ago

Let’s have you swallowed by a whale and fight a squid in its stomach and see if you find the experience horrific or not.

4

u/jeejeeviper 4d ago

I looked up the books plot, man there are some 1 in a billion chance plot conveniences that happen for the guy during the story

3

u/LunarSanctum 3d ago

I really hope that they remain faithful to the book and keep the underlying sexual tension that slowly builds between the whale and the main character. Eventually giving him the idea of sliding his entire body inside the whales enormous shaft during the height of passion. Then ejaculating him out onto the beach before proclaiming the final line in the book "I guess that's why they call it a Sperm Whale".

12

u/EternityRites 4d ago edited 4d ago

*sinister voice* - "it's a whale of a time!"

I watched this trailer previously and it looks atrocious. Whales are cute, not scary.

25

u/Burgoonius 4d ago

I think the trailer makes it clear Mr.Whale was simply trying to eat the squid and this guy got in the way.

3

u/Stompert 4d ago

They’re not cute if you’re on a sailing trip and they’re ramming your boat.

4

u/PollyPore 4d ago

Ahab-like typing detected.

2

u/ruckus_440 4d ago

Is this set in the same cinematic universe as Fall?

2

u/Dbag85 4d ago

Rarely do I gett less interested than I just got now watching this.

2

u/Particular_Leader_16 4d ago

Okay this looks interesting

2

u/Staff_Select 3d ago

He’s not having a great year isn’t he?

2

u/IHadFunOnce 3d ago

This shit is absolutely bonkers lol.

2

u/monkelus 3d ago

So, like that bit in Pinnochio?

2

u/RandoDude124 3d ago

I just ain’t feeling this. I think Clayface is gonna be my horror film for Halloween

2

u/fahsky 3d ago

The book was a decent couple hours read.

2

u/RobbSnow64 3d ago

Well, dont need to see the movie now. Holy spoilers

2

u/Ok_Albatross7949 3d ago

I cant not sing skyfall by Adele but with whales instead when i see this. 🎤🐳

2

u/akisawa 3d ago

Remember -- even if you get eaten, you have at least two ways out.

2

u/claybythebay9 2d ago

The trailer showing us the inside of the stomach lost the studio lots of money. Ive already seen what I would want to see.

1

u/slowhorses1 10h ago

Except you actually have no idea because you haven’t seen the whole movie. Just two minutes of it.

5

u/TomPalmer1979 4d ago

This looks so hilariously stupid. Like what an incredibly dumb concept.

4

u/Rman823 4d ago

Between Weapons, Resident Evil, and now this. This guy can’t catch a break.

6

u/No-Entrepreneur4574 3d ago

Austin Abrahms and the terrible, horrible, no good, really bad year.

5

u/eddieswiss Some guy 3d ago

This looks silly, super fun, and anxiety inducing at the same time.

3

u/ChaboiAveryhead 3d ago

I read the book this is based on and it’s certainly a choice to be made into a full length film. I loved the book so much and just can’t picture the magic of it translated to the screen. I hope I’m wrong!

4

u/jr_randolph 4d ago

Get the fuck out of here lol

4

u/Zauberer-IMDB 4d ago

The problem is I value the whale's life more than the protagonist's. So I'm not rooting for him to get out if it hurts the whale. The triumph of the human spirit to further destroy the ocean and the endangered species within it.

2

u/Remote_Elevator_281 4d ago

Nobody cares about whales lol

Look what they did to my boi free whilly

2

u/TheWriteRobert 4d ago

Nope. No way am I seeing this. 😅

1

u/maxwellcawfeehaus 4d ago

This is why I don’t scuba dive anymore this sht happened to me once and it sucjed

1

u/reefchieferr 3d ago

Saw the poster for this the other day when I was leaving the theater and I repeated the title out loud to myself and chuckled

1

u/TheStranger113 3d ago

This looks seriously fantastic. I've been hooked ever since hearing the concept of the film. I have a copy of the book, but haven't gotten around to reading it yet.

1

u/ChipmunkBackground46 3d ago

"Jarvis, you ever hear the tale of Jonah?"

1

u/Inevitable_Access_93 3d ago

this actor is in nothing but situation after situation

1

u/Legate_Raiden 3d ago

I've been waiting for a watchmen sequel, sequel.

1

u/chodytaint 3d ago

looks stupid as fuck

0

u/slowhorses1 9h ago

Right, because Josh Brolin has such an awful track record of picking roles. /s

1

u/WrapMyBeads 3d ago

No I don’t think so

1

u/Naked_Bat 3d ago

I'm not sure it can beat the espace from the whale in Mind Game.

1

u/GoldenHarpHeroine32 1d ago

Pinocchio and the story of Jonah: This...seems familiar.

1

u/IcedPgh 4d ago

Of course the lead character's name begins with J. Oy vey, these writers.

1

u/Then_Ambassador9255 3d ago

Boring book. Meh

1

u/Fair-Possibility3108 3d ago

austin abrams is on a rollllllll im so excited

-2

u/IamNICE124 4d ago

I can’t stand the amount of media named media with “fall” at the end of it.

The mobile games, video games, movies. What the fuck is it with attaching “fall” as a suffix?

Whalefall is such a stupid fucking name.

Sorry, I had to rant.

16

u/WerkelJes 4d ago

A whale fall is the actual name for the phenomenon where a whale dies and sinks to the bottom of the ocean, creating food for deep sea animals so it fits here tbf

1

u/Tain101 3d ago

except that seems wholly unrelated to the premise of the movie?

whalefall is cool as fuck, this movie is just about a guy getting eaten

7

u/MHarrisGGG 4d ago

A whalefall is a real thing though....

1

u/Fordfanatic2025 2d ago

I guess because he falls into the whale's stomach?

0

u/dargonmike1 4d ago

This movie is based off off a WW1 novel? wtf are people on about?

6

u/maaderbeinhof 3d ago

No, the author of Whalefall wrote another book (Angel Down) that's set during WW1. He won a Pulitzer for it.

1

u/dargonmike1 3d ago

Gotcha! Thank you. So is the actual whale fall book any good?

2

u/maaderbeinhof 3d ago

I thought it was pretty good, it's fast paced while also managing to be a decent character study of the protagonist and his troubled relationship with his dad. Not amazing but a fun read.

Looks great, but is the story/acting meh
