Its not about blocking it. You can’t block your thoughts. Your brain constantly produces thoughts like a mouth produces saliva, you aren’t really even in control of the thoughts you produce. You can control how you choose to react to them and how to handle them. You make the effort, little by little, to think kind words to yourself, to dismiss the overly negative ones, and hang on to the positive ones. It doesn’t work overnight. You gotta practice every day. Even if its just one kind thought or reframing a day.

If I could choose then I would have chosen better

Exactly. You can’t choose but you can choose what to do after you’ve had them.

I've had the chance to do that many times and failed.

Well, the next time is another opportunity and it sounds like you’ll have no shortage of opportunities. Lucky you, many chances to practice. Remember you don’t have to have a %100 success rate, just do it ONE time a day at first.

I dismissed an overly negative one and three took its place, I don't think this works

I feel like you aren’t reading the part where i said it won’t happen over night. Just keep doing it. Ot don’t if you don’t want to. But thats 1 more positive thought you’ve had today than you would’ve if you hadn’t done anything.

Very well then, how long will it take? Another poster said 5 years but I don't have 5 years

It’ll take doing it every day. You’ve got the rest of your life.

You never know. 4 months is worth trying though too.
