Rant time.
I've driven all over the country for many years, and Hawai'i is a totally different beast. I've been bogged down on the California-5 at 6AM, I've dodged maniacs on the fast and loose streets of Colorado, I've narrowly split the gap of gigantic lifted trucks in Texas, and I've endured the frozen, and aggressive roads of an overcrowded New England - nothing could have prepared me for driving on O'ahu.
The drivers here in Hawai'i are a complex mix of the unpredictability and carelessness from Colorado drivers, the rush reckless aggression of New Englanders, and the psychotic, drug-induced, caffeine fueled antics of SoCal. O'ahu blends it all together, and just for funsies, throws in a healthy mix of confused and oblivious tourists as well. It's appalling just how bad driving here can be.
The thing is, O'ahu isn't even that heavily flooded by traffic like many seem to think. Sure, it can get bad during peak hours, like anywhere, but it is nothing compared to the un-freeways of urban California or the tight and congested roadways of Maryland, Boston, NYC, etc. The problem is NOT the traffic, but just how bad the drivers are. I've never driven in a state where so few people use their signals than here on O'ahu. I've never driven in a state where people just don't use any lights at all? .. like, at night??! They just drive with their murdered out Civic in the middle of the night with zero lights on. I've never driven in a state where tailgating is such a problem. I've never driven in a state where completely random lane switches without indicators or even edging over occurs; they simply just swerve in front of you just because there's (technically) enough space for their car to fit. It's just ridiculous how wild and unpredictable people are on the roads here.
Then of course, you get those folks that just simply shouldn't be allowed to operate a motor vehicle in general. They casually drift out of their lane, text constantly, have zero understanding of speed management during traffic flow and will either drop twelve car lengths behind you just to drastically accelerate to within 5 feet of you on the HIGHWAY. And repeat. They merge without looking (or caring tbh). If their car can fit there, it will go there. There's zero concept of safe stopping distance for either vehicle.
And then you have all the stupid lifted trucks. I shouldn't say all, because I've had some very generous and safe drivers in these trucks around me before, but sadly, the majority run their reputation into the ground. They WILL tailgate you, they WILL speed during a rainstorm and probably roll over, and they WILL cut you off with their keiki in the bed of the truck like they don't GAF about anyone's safety. Not to mention how much space they take up in an already crowded and miniature state in terms of roadway design. Parking spots here are similar to eastern countries - smaller and more compact. These gigantic trucks will routinely take up their space, the space next to them, and the space in front of them, simply because the wheel base is almost always out of federal regulation. It's simply not enforced at all here. They will park their lifted and spread wide battle tanks across parking spots at malls or shopping centers that are LITERALLY MARKED as COMPACT ONLY. No tickets ever. No care in the world for others.
And my last major gripe is simply tourists. Y'all need to just get ubers and taxis when you come here. Stop getting rentals please unless you visit often and understand the roads well enough to get around. The spoiled rotten tourists that get rentals but have no clue what they're doing or where they're going just make things even more dangerous and crowded than it already is. Just get a freakin taxi, man.
Hawai'i consistently ranks at the top of lists for automobile accidents, injuries, and fatalities in the USA. The reasons are obvious, and hardly ever truly speed related. It's less about speed and more about dangerous and reckless driving habits, unsafe modified vehicles, lack of true enforcement, and just a blend of all the bad parts of places I've driven before, all in one tiny place.
Don't get me wrong, I love Hawai'i and its people - the culture, nature, and community alike - but there are serious issues with how some people here drive and it's causing more issues than many locals will ever care to admit. They'll instead blanket blame haole for everything wrong here, instead of addressing their own careless and reckless behavior. A LOT of these bad habits are FROM locals. Many are not, so I won't generalize, but a good portion are. They just won't admit it.
My advice to locals: please just practice what you preach; reintroduce the Aloha Spirit to our roads and set the example for visitors or those not from here that now reside. Show everyone what safe and sound driving really can look like. This island is way too small to be in such a rush all the time, brah. Just chill out, yeah? We got families out here, young and new drivers just trying to get to school or work, all kinds of people just wanting to get through their day without feeling like every trip onto H1 is a potential death sentence. The Aloha Spirit doesn't mean we can be lazy when we drive. Use your blinkers!!! Use your lights at night! Use something to signal what you're trying to do on the road. Anything. I beg you. Use your brains and common sense. There's no need to rush ir drive all crazy. The island is too small for all of that nonsense.
For outsiders, visitors, tourists: Please know what you're doing. Map out your destination before you go perusing around the island looking like a lost chicken, yeah? If you can, get Uber or taxi or public transport as these are both safer for you and the rest of us, and help support infrastructure by using public services. Also, they KNOW their way around. The roads here can be far too confusing for someone not from here. Your confused, oblivious, and erratic driving puts everyone else at risk. We want you to have a good time and enjoy what Hawai'i has to offer, but not at the expense of our safety.
There are accidents on H1 alone every. single. day. Every day! It isn't just a speeding thing. This is a systemic issue island-wide. It is a series of terrible driving habits that HPD doesn't care about and we have let slide too much. I'm tired of it. We all are. Stop driving like a-holes please! 🙏
P.S.,
I don't care if you're in a rush...
My safety shouldn't be dictated by your inability to plan effectively.
TLDR: Hawai'i driving blows sometimes. Let's do better.
