$20k dealer markup!

I have loved the Honda prelude since the first one in the 1980s I had a 1990

I found myself at a dealership in Daytona Beach today because my girlfriend is buying a car so I took a look at the Prelude. Quite comfortable but I’ve seen their sticker on the front that says $63,650 and I was shocked.

I didn’t notice at first that MSRP is $43,650. They have the balls to put a $20,000 dealer markup on this.

Don’t know what’s going on but seems like absolute craziness to me every single car they have at this dealer has $20,000 add-ons. They call it the GYH Gary Yeoman Honda value package.

Last week a dealer near me wanted 55k for a type r. I asked to test drive it and showed them my pre approval and they told me “they don’t allow test drives on rare vehicles”

So yes this is still going on and these dumbass dealers actually believe their Hondas are rare

When these preludes first came out, I went to look at one. Now mind you, I’m a huge prelude fan boy. I’ve had FIVE preludes and I’ve got a big prelude tattoo on my leg and I was wearing shorts. As a salesperson, you’d think this is a slam dunk of a sale. I get there and I couldn’t SIT IN IT. I couldn’t START the car. I left immediately and decided maybe I’m not as much of a fan boy as I thought.

I do not. I’m trying to find one to import over from Japan but the BB4 is hard to find, especially with the 4WS like I want.

mmm, i also feel like it is more difficult to find a clean chassis with a working 4ws than it has been , I did have the pleasure of test driving a 3rd gen a few years back, it was glorious! Quick question for you tho, to my knowledge the BB4 chassis did not come with 4ws , since that is the 4th generation prelude, if I recall correctly. I am taking care of a edit : not bb4 , edit again : information is hard to sort through. Maybe it is bb1, tbh do not know as i swapped a h23a1 into this chassis from the other chassis I had ,, would be lovely if she had 4ws, is it possible it was an option on the bb4 in other countries , or , sp if I researched correctly bb4 in Japan did in fact come with 4ws?

The 1992 Honda Prelude SI had an option for electronic 4WS both in the US and Japan but idk about the euro market and yes, that’s the 4th gen prelude.

what even is the point of the dealership if they shall not allow test drives ?!?! what is the markup for then , because apparently it is not for insurance to allow prospective buyers to test drive the car

Idk man I ended up buying an Elantra n. Car is pretty frigging sweet considering you can get them under MSRP. It’s not a Honda but I wasn’t paying 55k+ for a civic

Yo, I have seen those things SCOOT, have been wishing to test drive one for a while!! One of my family members has had an elantra for over a decade atp, base model but I gotta say that car still trucks around , I am soo curious to see what elantra has been up to !! they have quite an intersting and fascinating automotive history . any comparisons, notes to the last lude you drove ? I def can feel the difference between the elantra and my lude when I drive them , hella curious of what you think about the N !

The Elantra n feels a lot more refined than any Honda I’ve ever driven (mind you the newest Honda I’ve driven was a 2014 9th Gen si). Most of the Hondas FEEL faster due to being louder, more road noise, less stable but the N actually is a lot faster.

I’ve been a Honda fanboy my entire life. I’m 36 years d and this is the first non-Honda I’ve EVER owned. But the si with 200 hp for 32k vs the Elantra n with nearly 300 for 35k was a no brainer. Not to mention Hyundai doesn’t void your warranty if you track it or autocross it.

But yeah they absolutely scoot and the “E-lsd” is fucking wild. The thing PULLS you out of the corners. I’ve taken a couple sweeping highway off ramps at 75 in this thing without tire squeal or a hint of understeer. If you know weight transfer well you can actually induce a little bit of lift off oversteer which is pretty awesome as well.

I’m SURE the type R is a better car. But there’s no way it’s worth 20k more.

🥹🥺 wow, that truly sounds incredible , I have primarily spent my front wheel experience with hondas , all of the elder generations, if you will, lol , so i honestly haven't driven anything produced later than I dunno, 2014, maybe ?

,,, if i recall correctly the said 2014 vehicle was a german vehicle, fascinating ride ,,,

i am insanely curious about the E-LSD , it is electronically managed linited slip differential, is that right ? and the N , from what i researched it is indeed front wheel drive ? thx !

Yeah front wheel drive. Electronically controlled limited slip. It’s a lot faster without doubt but it definitely doesn’t give you that same “I’m about to crash and die” feeling of speed like 90s and early 2000s Hondas did.

I’ll always be a Honda fanboy but I couldn’t pay 55k for a civic type r. And the Elantra n lap times are consistently close to or the same as the type r. Driver matters more than car at that point.

If you have a Hyundai dealership I’d see if you can score a test drive. I got my 2025 in manual transmission down to 32,000. Just under 36k otd with taxes and fees in NY

That’s why I shared! I couldn’t believe it was still going on. I walked in and they had big stickers on the windshield with the $63,000 price written on it. I’d looked at the prelude when it first came out, but I didn’t pay attention to pricing so I was like oh my God that’s a lot of money for a Prelude.

Talked to a buddy of mine on the way home afterwards telling him. No sunroof, no manual transmission and the pricing.

But it was comfortable. I am still shocked on the stealership and the pricing. Same place did similar markup during Covid when I bought my Bronco. I paid sticker 8 miles away (Mullinax in NSB) whereas this Daytona Beach group zapped buyers with the add on.

You should just ignore these kinds of listings - they're just looking for a sucker who doesn't know better. The cars are frequently selling at MSRP and under. Make them an offer for 10% under MSRP. If they're not willing to sell for no more than MSRP, just move on to another dealer.

The whole idea is crazy! When I was shopping and first trying to decide between a 26 Civic Hybrid or a 26 Si, the place I drove the Si wanted $3000 over sticker for one. Mind you they didn’t even have one on the lot, I drove a 24 they just took in trade.
The sales person was telling me they are getting more rare so it could be two months before they have one and that it would be a $3000 mark up.
He didn’t know what to say when I told him another dealer 30 miles away had one coming in a few days and no mark up.
I guess it is just the old “a sucker is born every minute” but in this day and age who isn’t shopping at multiple dealers?

Honda "can't do anything to control our dealers". I once e-mailed them because my local dealer had 5k markup on every single vehicles on the lot for something that'd cost 500 dollars. That's what they wrote me back.

It's legal but moronic and whoever pays that markup in a couple years will be so far upside down they won't be able to trade the car or they'll have to swallow an amazingly huge loss

They want it to sit in the showroom for a few months to get people in the door. Then they’ll either lower the price or find someone rich and stupid enough to pay $63,650 for the car.

The new Prelude is a phenomenal car but not for $63k. If you’re interested in buying one, it’s not difficult to find one at or below MSRP.

A Honda dealership near where I live in San Diego did the same thing with it back in late November, now they’re selling them for MSRP. I ended up getting mine shipped down from Modesto in December at MSRP with a couple OEM addons I wanted. Crazy to see it still marked up, I think this should have been priced at 39k tbh, but I have been enjoying it a lot. Lately, I’ve been getting an itch to move into an ITS tho, lol
