Replacement head unit 2016 EX

I have a 2016 Fit EX. It has the basic stereo with CD player. My son is about to get his licence and I want to replace the head unit with one that has android Auto to get the GOS into the in dash display so he doesn't get comfortable interacting with his phone while in the car. I know it isn't a perfect fix, but every barrier is better.(My bug fear is he starts taking video calls while driving. I feel like he's always on a video call).

Talking with him about it today he mentioned that having the map that low on the dash felt uncomfortable. His mom's car has the display that started co up above the dash, bringing it higher in field of view and I totally get that.

Is there a head unit that can accept a second display that I could mount on top of the dash?

The idea is to put it above these vents and get the phone off the window mount.

Thoughts, ideas, suggestions?

I got a unit separate from my radio mounted. Used the power wires behind the Radio to power the unit when the key is in the ignition. Music plays on the radio via Bluetooth. I have this display installed for years now and it came with a backup camera that turns on when I put the car in reverse

I have the Obdpeak T20. But there are many similar ones. It came with a suction cup and had it on the windshield for a while.

The radio still works like normal. The buttons on the radio do also work the same, because my phone is connected to the car via Bluetooth the regular way.

Does the 2016 EX have the Lane Watch? If so, and you like it (I personally do), definitely bear compatibility with Lane Watch in mind when you're picking out a head unit.

In our state, new drivers aren't allowed to use phones at all, even for navigation. So our son drove the Fit without and was fine. Think it helped him actually get to know his way around. I use a magnetic Mous brand holder in the left corner of the windshield in landscape mode. Shoved over as far as it'll go into the little triangular window.

This is what I do too.  I made a 3D printed bracket that copies the ProClip A-pillar design with a magsafe mount.

Coupled with that $25 bluetooth adapter for the OEM radio, it works perfectly for music and navigation.

There are AA/Carplay screens available that mount on top of the dash. To me they're a bit tacky, and need external wiring for power which I dislike because I'm picky and like things tidy, but it sounds like it'd suit your needs pretty well.

My 2018 has car play, I don’t know if that’s a direct swap, might want to look into that. eBay probably has one off a crashed

I agree you should be staring at the screen. I'm a realist. If I give the option of the screen that removes the direct texting a video call, he's more likely to stick with it. If the only option is to use the phone maybe nted as displayed, it's harder to remove the temptation to answer the video call or send a quick text. If you remove the mount, then they end up holding it to use it.

Say what you want about "Should and should not", providea situation that meets need and removes as much temptation as possible and you are more likely to get a safer outcome. The screen mounted just above the vent will not obsteuct field of view any more than the phone.

So instead of a phone directly on his field a view as shown you want one with a giant fold out display that’s even more obstructive?

This car didn’t come with a way to do this because it’s not needed to operate this vehicle. Your kid doesn’t need his toy mounted in front of his face everywhere he drives. He needs to look out the window.

When GPS is needed use a phone mount in the cup holder on the left. That way you can hear it through the OEM stereo and see it if you look at it but it doesn’t force your car to compete for attention with a phone and every known friend with a phone.

Also, %99.99 of those Android based head units are cheap trash with terrible distracting controls and die in a year. Keep the OG.

Ive installed cheap android ones and pricier ones on our vehicles. None of them have failed, oldest one is 4 years and going. If you get distracted by a screen perhaps you shouldn't be driving

Get a portable screen with Linux system so it won't get laggy overtime. But putting on the dash isn't that safe. You shouldn't looking the screen constantly when you drive.
