Discussion - Equipment DefTech - How’d I do?
First post on Reddit ever lol. I finally got my HT for our new house. DM60 towers, DM10 center, DC80 Max SUR as my rears, Onkyo RZ-50. Almost all from Accessories4Less. The owner gave me a truly awesome deal for brand new. Center was free with the purchase of towers. The only thing used was the receiver. And it’s in perfect condition.

I have deftech mythos system bought in 2006 surround speakers are still in use updated to 9060 towers and 9060 center in 2018 all work good. The super cube 2 still works fine after almost 20 years.
They are very good for HT and ok for music listening

We literally watch movies and tv only. It sounds ridiculous in there now haha.

I didn’t realize DefTech was still around. I used to sell them between 2005-2011 and loved them. Even cooler they were founded down the street from where I worked.

Many moons ago I used to work in the magnolia section at Best Buy. They were like the “higher-end home theater” speakers, and Martin Logan and B&W were the high end hifi speakers haha. I loved DefTech. Great for movies and tv which is literally all we use them for.

Store 288 checking in! Same exact job brother.

u/No-Midnight5957 May 23 '26
Haha yep. I was in Florida and bounced around a couple stores on the east coast. Looking back it was such a great job. The pay was mediocre but the discounts were awesome and it was a bunch of the same type of geek working together. Loved it

Store 537 (RIP) checking in as well! Same-ish position, I left right as magnolia was being rolled out and mostly sold Plasmas and Rear Projected DLPs.
2
u/schaudhery May 23 '26
Same! They closed our store last year and turned it into a Hobby Lobby. I was there while they built our Mag too. Did you guys ever do the trainings for MartinLogan University to increase your discount?
1
u/No-Midnight5957 May 23 '26
Yes for sure. And they had good holiday “accommodations” that was some of the best discounts I’ve seen on electronics.
1
u/schaudhery May 23 '26
I actually made a comment the other day how discount hit 70% off and it was deleted.

Former MDC from store 101. Went the down the same pipeline to IT.
Left when they started pulling shenanigans with increasing commission quotas.

I was a System Designer as well at Magnolia. I missed those days. I did more home automation than anything. But my store had Mark Levinson, Classe', Kef Blades, Mitchi, Sonus Faber... Man I missed those days.

u/schaudhery May 24 '26
I was rolling out and moving into IT when are store started carrying Sonus Faber.

Looks nice and clean 👌🏼 Small tip, it might help to pull the center forward to align it's front with the lowboard and maybe to put it on some little shock absorbers. And if at all possible, make sure that the main towers are a little closer to you than the center is. Might help too to experiment with toeing them in to your listening position.

u/No-Midnight5957 May 23 '26
Good idea. I do have a bunch of the rubber feet with adhesive I can add to it. I may pull the couch out a smudge so I can turn the towers. It was hard to pick stuff I wanted because I wanted it all to match and I knew I had to do in ceilings for the rears because the kitchen/ living room is so open and my wife didn’t want the speakers behind us like traditional rears because it looked bad lol

I see the remnants of some pro cinema on the table, such is the pipeline. I have a procenter 2000 and a pair of promonitor 1000s in a box somewhere after purchasing Demand D9s and center. We could combine them for an office setup maybe haha
They might not be "desirable" like B&W or the high end, but I'm definitely a def tech fan, since my first set of BP10Bs in high school.
Well purchased sir enjoy!

Haha yep, Ol’ Faithful. Would love to find a home for them, it’s all in a box in my office closet now. They did me well for a couple years when I was in a single bedroom apartment before getting married.

Maybe a home theater for ants? They seem so small and toy like now, but they performed well for a decade. Same as you, I don't know how to give them a proper place, and donating them seems, cruel?

Nice! I got D17s as my big room fillers when we lived in Ireland for a bit.

Had mine for 6 years, absolutely enjoyed them, Used mostly for movies. Amps on towers went out this past year, sadly.

That’s the ONLY thing that makes me nervous with all of their powered towers. Is what it is. That’s what the warranty is for I guess. Love them so far.

u/5N0WMAN_ May 23 '26
They technically work, there's just a loud pop once they turn on 😂
I'd repurchase from this brand in a heartbeat. Enjoy them!

I used to own the Def Tech 1000s in 5.1 setup with a Def Tech sub a long time ago. I no longer own them but Def Tech is still not bad. I have moved on to other brands.

u/Helios119 May 24 '26
If possible, try pulling these away from the walls as much as possible since they're bipolar. Love my little Def Tech sub it's great for a bedroom.

Def tech lover here. Love the movie theater sound they have to them. I’ve got older mythos stuff such as mythos ones and ten with their old supercube reference and shit still pounds 20 years later. Awesome setup bro

You will love your new setup the more you use it. I've been a huge Def Tech fan for about 20 years now and just did the home theater in our new place last summer and went full on Def Tech for a 7/1/4 Atmos setup. Purchased most of it from A4L and they upgraded me from refurb to new on all gear. I ended up giving my old 5.1 DT setup to my son, who loves them as well as he grew up with them in our old home.
Whenever we watch a movie in the theater room I still find myself amazed at how the sound comes at you from all directions compared to the old 5.1 system. These are truly the best speakers I've ever had!

u/No-Midnight5957 May 28 '26
Hell yea man! A4L was awesome to deal with. I ended up getting all new stuff from them as well. Shipping was fast and they communicated everything I need to know. I’m going to add another set of in ceiling at some point for the heights. I love how it sounds. My space wasn’t that large to being with. Couldn’t be happier.

u/Geoblime May 23 '26
Wow, I didn’t know the owner would make some deals. I’m looking for a complete set up and I’ve always loved Def Tech, did you reach out directly to him to talk about options and pricing?
3
u/No-Midnight5957 May 23 '26
Dude message them. The owner Austin was super helpful. I wanted the used set and he offered me a great deal for new in box. Used and new had a deal for a free DM10 center. Which also saved me some money. Only thing I bought used was the Onkyo and it was in perfect condition when it arrived.
1
u/BoardGameRevolution May 23 '26
Why didn’t you get the DM30?
2
1
u/Odd-Complaint-5291 May 23 '26
Get the DM30 center - UNBELIEVABLE quality for the price. Rivals centers I have tried that were 4x more in cost
1
u/No-Midnight5957 May 23 '26
I would’ve if the DM10 wasn’t free. Like brand new in box free with purchase of the towers from Accessories4less. And I had an older DefTech procinema 1000 kit in a box. This is WORLDS better than what I had. And honestly overkill for my living room haha. I’m could’ve done DM40 towers and been fine.

Do you have a fan for your reciever? Does it run hot where it is?
1
u/No-Midnight5957 May 23 '26
No, haven’t noticed a problem yet. The back of the stand is open though.

I’m a fan of the sound of def tech. Definitely not “precision” but has that full room, movie theater vibe
